During the Broken Circle quest at the Tower of Magi, the Warden is forced to make some drastic decisions.
- Do you ally with Wynne or fight her? - Do you accept Cullen's request? - Do you kill all the mages in case they're possessed? - How do you save First Enchanter Irving? - How the heck do you use the Litany of Adralla?
and most importantly...
- Do you leave the Tower in the hands of the Templars who have presided over the mages for centuries, leaving the mages to a certain death? Or do you trust the mages to examine and verify their own people, saving their lives but perhaps allowing the guilty or possessed to survive?
I've found roleplay reasons for both. My elves and mages have saved the tower and it's inhabitants with ease, as this is the easiest roleplaying choice to make. Supporting annulment is a little harder. I played a naive Cousland with little knowledge of magic, who was brought up to trust the Templars. She backed them up with a heavy heart, regretting that she couldn't do more to save the mages. The decision weighed on her conscience throughout the game. Then my dwarf simply distrusted magic altogether, and thought it best to cleanse the tower as quickly and efficiently as possible (including Wynne).
What choices did you make?

You do not necessarily have to recruit Wynne in order to save the Tower itself.
That's what happened to me the first time. You literally agree with Morrigan ONCE for a change and suddenly everyone wants to kill you...

The Litany of Adralla is frustrating to use, especially since it doesn't appear to do any good anyway. The cooldown time for it (seriously, WHY is there a cooldown time for a friggin' chant?!) is too long in order to use every time Uldred does his blood magic voodoo, and even if you DO manage to shut down the voodoo, the only one to survive anyway is Irving (at least as far as mages you can see once the fight is over).
Just kill Uldred before he kills Irving and you're good. Or, don't worry about it and go with the Templars if you don't.
Note: You can't have the mages help you with Connor in Redcliffe unless Irving survives. You also may not be able to get an invite for Dagna if he dies, but I'm sure about that one. Anyone else know?

Can anyone explain what going along with Cullens request actually means? Is it just siding with the templars or does Irving have to die? I don't really feel like you get any options to kill any mages other than Uldred and you have to kill him anyways.

Shocked an broken. Yeah he admits it later on that h ewasn't really thinking straight there he's still really a young/inexperienced templar there really. But his experiences there really wore on him that's I think why he kind of allowed himself to be manipulated as much as he was by Meredith in DA2 as well. Until the end at least when he saw sense. I'm glad he did though as it made him an interesting character

I meant what does it mean mechanically? Is it just pure RP and flavour for Cullen later? I just felt like it was presented like an actual choice you could make with consequences, like if you got the oportunity to kill Irving yourself, even if you managed to save him from becoming an abomination. It just feels weird since so many other choices actually are acknowledged in-game by others, yet this one choice is just fluff . Edit: Example: When I recently played my power hungry Cousland, he readilly agreed with the request, but no opportunities to comply was presented after that. I didn't know if I had already screwed it up (since I let the mage in the closet stay alive) or if there was something else I had to do and I was just too stupid to figure it out.

Yes, I think it is just RP at that time (for approval gain/loss) since you still have to actually decide later on what to do once you return. If Irving dies, then you auto side with the Templars. If he is still alive and returns with you, it's possible to pick either/or, I think, depending on what you tell Gregoir.

Yea, I had Irving survive which is why I was confused. As I said, I though maybe you'd get a chance to kill him/other mages after you had dealt with everything else.
Thanks for the clarification.

On the Litany of Adralla. It's stored where the potions/gifts are. You put it in the quickslot and click on it to use it. Ideally you use it to ruin Uldred's day when he goes on about "Do you want my power" or some crap like that and thus by pass having to fight an extra abomination. Yes there is cooldown, but you can equip it on the quickslot of everyone in your team (except maybe doggo, that needs testing), so it's on cooldown on for the Warden? Make Wynne or whoever use it!
Why is it my bae? Because it also works on other characters than Uldred. Go downstairs and read it to the Rage Demon on the first floor, he'll have a hoot. (Will add a bit more later, when I have time.)

ArcadiaGrey Yup, everyone but the Dog can use it. (He tries dear boy, but alas, no thumbs). Huh, add Shale to the list. She has thumbs, but they're just too stiff. Ehehe. And cool down is not shared between characters. As for the bit for later. The Shades, Rage Demon and Abominations all felt the Adralla. Granted just 20-ish spirit damage and a few seconds of stun. But at the same time, 20 spirit damage and a tiny window of stun can be handy if you're crafty. Same with Desire and walking corpses. Possessed templars and Blood mages just laughed.
