I recently got a chance to play Battlefield 1, and I decided to stop halfway through the Italian main campaign. I'll give Battlefield 1 props for being able to create a visceral, almost realistic recreation of the battlefields of WW1, but unfortunately, that visceral, almost realistic recreation made fighting in the campaign uber stressful and terrifying. I don't like being stressed and terrified when playing a game. I would honestly rather watch the relatively short campaign online.

I've never got motion sickness from Skyrim, Fallout3 or Fallout New Fanboygas, but Fallout 4? Damn! After playing that game for just an hour I was absolutely as sick as a parrot, and very close to actually throwing up. The effect lasted for several unpleasant hours after quitting. I did a bit of research and the general consensus was that the games' weapon bobbing was a major cause. I installed a mod to disable weapon bobbing and never got motion sickness again. Not sure what to think about FA3, NV or Skyrim, but I do know that FOV can also play a major role in causing, or alleviating motion sickness. For instance, console versions of Skyrim have a fairly low field of view (around 60) whereas the PC version has a far higher FOV (around 90), because the developers expect console players to be sitting much further away from the screen. If you're playing on a console and sitting very close to the screen, that could be it - or possibly if you're playing on PC and sitting very far from the screen. Half Life 2 used to make my face go green with nausea during the airboat sections - because the game used to switch to a lower FOV when climbing aboard the airboat. Fortunately they changed this in one of the patches and I've been able to play without issue for years. Interesting - because I am very prone to motion sickness, especially with FP games. But I played FO4 in third person and was fine with it. I should say FO4 is a game I tried to play but never finished for this thread but I played hundreds of hours in it and liked it very much. I just never finished the storyline. In fact, I completely forgot about it after a while. I've never been able to play any other Bethesda game for any length of time. I hated Morrowind and Skyrim still has only 14 hours on my Steam account. I thought I wouldn't like FO4 but I did. Much prefer the setting for one thing it seems. I also am starting to fail with Bioware games - I found DAI a slog which got boring though I managed to finish it but MEA I just stopped playing about half way through. I'm surprised people don't like Dishonored - looooooved both games. I've done three playthroughs of Dishonored 2 - it's rare I replay once. I love the setting. I like the Witcher series too. Oh Bioshock - couldn't get into that either. Loved the idea of it but ... meh

There are quite a few titles I played for a bit and for all kinds of reasons quit playing them. Some of them I plan to play/finish the down the line working through my games backlog, whilst some others I probably never will.
Resident Evil 4 Quite some time ago I purchased most of the RE-games in one of the many Steam-sales. I ended up with the Zero and One remasters, parts 4, 5, and 6, and both of the Revelations games. They interested me since I once played Code Veronica on the Dreamcast (though never managed to complete it), and really enjoyed the setting and story. I don't have a lot of problems with these tank controls either, since they were fairly common by the year 2000, even on PC.
I've played through and enjoyed RE 0 and 1, and since all the intermediate titles aren't available (yet!) I tried to play part 4. Which is one of the best games ever according to many who have played it. Ultimate HD edition is a blatant lie though: there isn't anything HD about it.
So the graphics were ugly and I had trouble getting used to the controls. Even by using an XBone controller since it's pretty much unplayable using m+kb. It's supposed to be a third person over-the-shoulder action/survival horror, which more or less retains the classic tank controls from the earlier titles. I couldn't continue playing it. I might give it another chance though in the future, and at least install the texture overhaul mod, but I went on and played (and completed!) RE 5 instead, which has better controls (even with mouse+keyboard), and much better graphics.

I'm going to add Rage and Return to Castle Wolfenstein to the list.
Bought both real cheap in the Steam sale, and abandoned both shortly after playing.
Rage gave me skull-splitting motion sickness around 15 minutes into the game. After quitting I came very close to actually throwing up, and my face must have been green. The sickness lasted for around four hours. Apparently there's a way to adjust the game's FOV via console commands, but given that I found the whole thing rather lacklustre and uninspired I saw little reason to bother.
Return to Castle Wolfenstein gave me no motion sickness, and was actually a very competent shooter - but unfortunately it just bored me to death. I just wasn't feeling it, and the endless empty grey stone rooms just seemed very very bland and unappealing after a while.

I have several games "in progress" (too many games are far, far too long these days); but there is only one I will never go back to in order to try to finish it eventually... The Witcher 3. I won't even try to purchase The Witcher or The Witcher 2.
Fallout 4 is in real danger of being the second game on that list. I like the story and the gameplay, but the numerous quest-breaking bugs I've encountered have been really irritating and the number of times I've had to start over from the beginning due to save file corruption has been really excessive. I just may never be able to get a save file to hold together long enough to complete the game.

Recently:
Remember Me It tried to be Assassin's Creed and Batman, and failed at both. I dropped it after I accidentaly went through a section and couldn't go back to get some optional stuff. It angered me because I couldn't go back and since the game only autosaves, I couldn't even reload an earlier save.
Ys Origin It seemed really nice, but it seemed a little hard and I wasn't with patience enough to try a "hard" game right now
The Testament of Sherlock Holmes It's absolutely awful. The game gives you WRONG HINTS, there are stuff that are just not logical and the evidences you find don't make sense with the conclusions. I've played another Sherlock Holmes game and it was absolutely fine, but this one was horrible. Dropped at the chess part.

Interesting question, and not an easy one for me. I have tons of games bought at steam sales that I have played for no more than 20 minutes, but that was mostly due to major chunks of avilable gaming time being occupied by other games such as Mass Effect. I can think of five games/series that I really wanted to like but didn´t and therefore gave up on:
1. Assassin´s Creed. The first real "open world" game I tried. My problem with it was that there was a huge and nice-looking world to explore, but nothing really interesting to find inside it. The missions were exciting at first, but turned out to feel really repetitive after a short while, so I dropped this one around 10 hours in and have never tried another of the series. Maybe they have become better by now as they seem to be very popular in general, but that first experience was not good at all for me and I have never gone back.
2. NHL Hockey. I love hockey and played tons of games in the NHL series since the legendary NHL 93 edition, mostly with friends until around 2001, when it started to feel like every year´s new edition was basically the same game with small tweaks.
3. FIFA and PES. Played various games from those series from around 2002 until around l 2008. Ironically, what I disliked about the later editions was exactly the opposite from what I disliked about NHL. Every year there were more new button combos and such stuff that made it more of a mess for me to play. So much for being consistent in my tastes .
4. The later Trackmania games (Canyon, Valley etc.). i played a ton of Trackmania Sunrise and United from 2006 to around 2012 and loved this game - a very simple but variety-rich multiplayer arcade racer with tons of inventive tracks built by an outstanding community. Online racing was an absolute blast - no racing game I have ever played generated anything like the urge to shave another 0.1 sec off my lap time than this one despite its simple mechanics (which basically came down to finding the best lines and keeping the balance between grip and slide). The later ones looked much nicer, but they lacked variety in how different types of environment felt and the variety of community tracks also dropped.
5. Black & White. Maybe my biggest gaming disappointment when it lauched around the year 2000. I absolutely loved Peter Molyneux´ simple yet engaging games Populous and Powermonger on the Amiga, and this one looked like it would take this type of games to the next three levels in one step. It looked nice, but there was literally nothing enjoyable in it for me, a fairly dull affair which did nothing for me at all. The intensely pre-hyped depth and variety just was not there (or maybe I missed it), so after less than 10 hours it went on the garbage pile.

I 100% agree with your assessment of the first Assassin's Creed: It was a beautiful-looking game with nice refreshing gameplay features, and a quite interesting story. I really had to force myself to go on with the game just to see the rest of the story, but all the filler content/timesink stuff went particularly repetitive fast. Assassin's Creed 2, which I played pretty soon after it's initial release was just better in nearly every way, and much less repetitive! Brotherhood even improved on AC2 in many ways (though I thought the story was somewhat less interesting). I've yet to play Revelations, but I've heard it's even better than both.

Then that mod would be definitely "cheating" in my eyes since clearly the intent of the devs is that modifying the game constitutes the forfeiture of achievements.

Well, you have do what feels best to you. But I can't think of a mod I have that makes the game easier, quite contrary. So modding should give golden chievos.

Right now my favorite Assassin's Creed game is Syndicate, but Revolutions was my #1 until that point and now only #2 by a short margin. There is some open world issues with the game, but there is stuff to do in the meantime. I was at max level close to start of the story because I had a lot of fun doing the hijack events where you just have to jump onto a wagon or train to start the adventure. There was the typical collect-a-thon, but unlike the first game most of them will show up on the map if you get close.

Modded Fallout 4 becomes unbearable without precombine fixes for downtown Boston's. I can imagine how difficult it would be to play FO4 unmodded.

Borderlands 2.
Which is strange because I really enjoyed the first Borderlands, in a quirky looter shooter kinda way.
But I only ever got maybe a quarter or less into Borderlands 2 and just had zero interest in it. Has sat in a box ever since. Maybe I'll try again someday.

Having to do at least a dozen trips to whichever settlement and the area your looting is not fun (especially if it takes two hours to clear the whole area).

lol who plays cod and battlefield for campaigns
I only played MW2 and W@W campaigns and that was it
Horizon Zero Dawn is my game for this list. Loved the lore, didnt care for the setting as much and the bow & arrow gimmicks got old. I wound up watchong my girlfriend play it.
Samurai Warriors Sanada Edish is my second. Too many small segments and not enough battles and chaos.
My last entry for now is Metal Gear Solid: A Phantom Game. Spoiled myself on the plot. Way to fuck the lore and shit on Big Boss, Kojimer. I got it for free on PS+ and still couldnt muster enough fucks to give past the intro. It might as well have not happened at all. Ground Zeroes was a decent note to end on.

A list of games I started and never finished: *Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Since then I know I can't stand hardcore modes in games. It's not that I died often, but the fact that I could not re-load if I wanted. *Antichamber: looked interesting, but never got into it. *Bioshock 2: I really liked the first game, but playing as that brute did not appeal. Since I never finished this part, Bioshock: Infinite remains completely unplayed. Got the series extra-cheap, so no big deal.
*Borderlands 2: I really liked the first one, but never got into the second.
*The Council: another game that forces hardcore mode, but you can't die, you're just stuck with your decisions. Would be ok, and the first part is really nice, but things begin to fall apart with the second chapter, so I never moved beyond that. I may still return though. *Crusader Kings II: Got this one as a gift because I had it on my Steam wishlist, but it turned out too dry for me. *Dreamfall: The Longest Journey. I had played the predecessor a very long time ago. Turned out I lost my taste for this kind of game. *ELEX: I thought the developers would've put something new into their games after all those years, but I might as well play Gothic 3 with a different texture pack. Also no engaging plot at all. *Game of Thrones (the Telltale game): Urgh. Bought this on an impulse, but couldn't get into it at all, even though I love the world, the TV series and the books. *Rise of the Tomb Raider: I was incredibly put off by the (for me) extra-difficult intro, and so I stopped after that. And for a game like this, I have to be in the mood, and I never got into it at a time when I didn't have other, more important games to play.

Modded Fallout 4 becomes unbearable without precombine fixes for downtown Boston's. I can imagine how difficult it would be to play FO4 unmodded. It's super annoying. Having to do at least a dozen trips to whichever settlement and the area your looting is not fun (especially if it takes two hours to clear the whole area). I'm surprised Beth didn't realise how tedius settlement crafting would be without that perk that links all workbenches. A perk that you might have to compromise your build to get or just say eff it to settlement building outside a few places.

Game of Thrones I understand because Telltale (prior to the shutdown) isn't really for everyone. It's personally not my favorite of their entries, though that's mainly because I wasn't really that much into the show. Rise of the Tomb Raider I also gave up on, but that was mainly for how the game still encouraged the recourse scavenging and survival themed stuff when I felt it honestly wasn't needed in this game and more sense in the first one.

Remembered another one...
Metro: Last Light
One of the few games I tried on the XBox 360 I poked around with and hated it. The gimmick of basically always having to be conscious of running out of air or gas mask filters or whatever it was drove me nuts and I just had zero fun with it. I do not like timed objectives, and that whole game is basically a timed objective due to that element.
