Ah! As someone who has never played the previous DA, I am enlightened. Thank you. Is there such thing as forgiveness though? Do you think he could ever redeem himself? His intent was to slay a demon in Emprise du Lion but ended up protecting the people there. He then joined the inquisition. Both him and Blackwell had a dark, violent pass. I don't know. It's always possible if the developers decided to. It would have been an interesting thing to explore but we already have Inquisition romances where a Dalish Inquisitor has to decide whether it's worth staying with a paramour or not. Sera will blackmail the relationship with Lavellan if they don't agree with her calling Dalish beliefs all lies. Cassandra will ask an Inquisitor to consider becoming Andrastian if they have their own gods but trash the religious faith of the Dalish. She even gives disapproval for saying you don't believe in the Maker and massive disapproval for criticizing the Chantry. Some people even have issues with Dorian condoning slavery. It all depends on the person. Personally? Cassandra and Sera are hard for me to make a romance play through for. Their lack of respect for the Inquisitor having their own beliefs is a mood killer. Blackwall never demands or judges who the Inquisitor is, only what they do and he's worked his tail off already trying to atone. For Michel to work as a romance, I'd want to see the Inquisitor actually be able to express anger and to argue for their own opinion instead of quietly taking it without a word if Michel ever made denigrating comments about elves. <iframe width="23.960000000000036" height="6.699999999999989" style="position: absolute; width: 23.960000000000036px; height: 6.699999999999989px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_18375328" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="23.960000000000036" height="6.699999999999989" style="position: absolute; width: 23.96px; height: 6.7px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1138px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_40560405" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="23.960000000000036" height="6.699999999999989" style="position: absolute; width: 23.96px; height: 6.7px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 272px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_1430647" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="23.960000000000036" height="6.699999999999989" style="position: absolute; width: 23.96px; height: 6.7px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1138px; top: 272px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_51716305" scrolling="no"></iframe> I absolutely agree with you. It will put a lot of work for the developers to give players more autonomy and "gray areas" to express themselves, not black or white. Hey, if someone is willing to hire me to write with them....lol.

His intent was to slay a demon in Emprise du Lion but ended up protecting the people there. He then joined the inquisition. Both him and Blackwell had a dark, violent pass. I don't think that's a question that can be objectively answered. Everyone has to find the limit for them in that regard. After all, some continue to want to be in a relationship with Blackwall and Solas, despite their lying or their past. There are many mage players that romance Cullen, despite his past issues. For me, it would depend on how it's portrayed in the game, how the character reacts to it, how I feel about those two combined, and how it meshes with my character's RP.
I can tell you that there definitely would be people into the self-tortured former chevalier with self-identity issues.

I can say that I would hesitate in approaching Michel now that I know a lot more about him, just as much as I had hesitation in approaching Bull but my curiosity will get the best of me.

After much consideration, I have changed my vote from Dorian to Cullen. Nothing against Dorian, but more a matter of realizing that Cullen doesn't rank as high as I was initially thinking (nothing against him either, just has some tough competition). I originally voted for Dorian because he was a very close second in Inquisition. I can't say with 100% certainty who my Inquisitor would have ended up with if Dorian had been straight. In the end though, Cullen became my romance choice for the game and Dorian became my favorite friendship in the entire series. In the other two games, Zevran and Fenris rank too high for another romance to come close to touching them . My fav romance from each game (Zevran/Fenris/Cullen) will occasionally challenge each other for the title of my favorites or the favorites - depending on my mood/the day. I've come to realize though that no matter how much the boys jockey for position, I think Cullen will always be just a little below Zev and Fen. So Cullen gets my vote, since even when Zevran and Fenris are tied for #1, poor Cullen will still be second best...

2d favorite is pretty much a tie between Dorian and Cullen (1 for male, 1 for female) but I voted for Dorian. My favorite by far is Fenris and femHawke.

I don't remember who I chose as my first, can't find the topic. It was either Leliana or Sera. So which ever one of those I didn't pick as my first is my second.

Oops, you responded to my post as I was still editing it, lol. If Michel did say that about being an elf, that I wouldn't romance him either. You might have to point it out where he mentioned it in the game. Michel doesn't mention it in game as his role is so brief, but what I've heard from other posters in Masked Empire is that he's overcompensated for his heritage with extreme hostility towards elves. Yeah. I think we have enough companions who've made their opinions known about elves. Sera, Solas, Cassandra, yet we can't call them out about Andrastians being just as ignorant while playing up the "Herald of Andraste" angle on them. I'm listening to the audio book "Masked Empire" now.

However, I do not know what the circumstances are for Michel, how he was raised, what other opportunities he could have, etc. Like you said, he's a product of his environment. Another factor in Michel's attitude is the fact that it is an offence punishable by death to impersonate someone of noble blood in Orlais. So he had double the reason to want to cover his tracks and not want to show any sort of sympathies towards elves. I might have thought that having had his parentage revealed and effectively lose his status in society, that he might have been capable of showing some affinity and sympathy towards elves. However, the moment he gets the chance to be taken back into service at the Orlesian Court, he seems only to happy to do so, so I think he had become too immersed in the mind-set of the Chevaliers to ever really change. I'm listening to "The Masked Empire" and it got to the part where Duke Gaspard's bard found out Michel's past and tried to blackmail him with it. So what I understand is that Michel's sponsor was the one who changed his last name with the intention of giving Michel a name befitting of his talent. His sponsor paid someone a lot of money for that alteration. It wasn't a choice Michel was given, such as being an elf-blood. I see why he is afraid of being revealed since he grew up living by a certain standard. It's probably a much easier life than to live in alienages where he would be harrassed, discriminated and even killed. Still, it is unfortunate that his fear clipped his acceptance of his heritage. Briala who saved him from Gaspard's mob even said Michel never called any elves knife-ear or rabbit until he felt threatened by her. Orlais's culture is as ruthless as Tevinter's.

Who's competing for third? 👀 Well let me see, the competition for 3rd place would be between Zevran, Solas, Anders, Morrigan and Blackwall. If i look at the number of times i`ve played each of this romances Zevran and Anders will be at the top of the list, so i think i'll take the easiest route and choose Anders in order to have a romance from each game in the top 3.

hmm... well since i look at the romances, in term of favorites, by the way they develop and by favorite person to romance (leliana), that would make my favorite the emotional roller coaster that is romancing solas. so second favorite would be rivalry isabela. it's really interesting to see how she evolve as a character and a person throughout the game and it shows even more in the romance. since i am on a roll, i'll go for third with sera, between cookies on the roof and having to struggle to find the perfect gift, the unexpected and fun nature of her and as a result the inquisitor's relationship with her is just great. fourth, fenris. being dumped by him was unexpected and he is in general a complex character (to put it lightly), so it make it interesting.
well that should do for now.

You know the guy who replaced Gaider wrote Solas right? I consider that different types of angst. The character/NPC experiencing personal angst (Fenris, Dorian) is different from causing the player angst by ripping out their heart and stepping on it. I'm not into the idea of a masochistic romance in these games, or in fiction generally. Those relationships are built on friendship, trust, and mutual support, which is why I like them; that is not the flavor of the Solas romance.
Aside from that, I don't care for any of the DAI followers he wrote in regard to romance, and 2/3 (I like Cole* just fine) of them generally, so he has yet to hook me for character writing. In fact, the only characters of his that I've found compelling are Felassan and Gaspard from The Masked Empire. I'm not "Gaider or die," or anything; I'm not into Alistair, Morrigan, Zevran, or DAA Anders. In the series so far, we've had 33** companions written by various people. Of those, ones written by DG have been my favorites -- Shale, Nathaniel, Fenris, Dorian, Cassandra. He also wrote The Grand Oak, who I find utterly charming. That's just how it's been for me. * Originally a DG character, you'll note, for however much he's changed since Asunder. ** This is counting Anders twice since he's so very different between DAA and DA2, plus the siblings in DA2, as well as the DAI advisors. (Oghren and Varric are counted only once.)

Hm, good point.
I do like Weekes' other work but yeah, I'm doing my first (and only) Solasmance run for the lols and OH MY GOD, why do people enjoy this teasing asshat?
I liked him better when he was just my NerdMage buddy. I get enough angst from him being my character's FRIEND.
But yeah, now that you mention all the folks Gaider has written...Cassandra is bae and Shale is just a treasure. Dorian is my other MageBuddy, but wheras Solas is a fellow nerd, Dorian is the Diva, who makes sure I don;t embarrass myself at balls and such.

He nerds out about magic right along with Solas, expresses great curiosity and fascination about many things of which he doesn't know or rarely sees, and similar things. He helped Alexius develop time magic. Distilling him down to being a "diva" is a pretty narrow read of the character.

For my second favorite romance we have to go back all the way to Origins. Leliana is my second favorite with Morrigan being the first. I wish in the Dragon Age Keep if you set that the Warden did not romance Leilana, or Morrigan. You can romance them 10 years later with the Inquisitor. After all it's not cheating if the Warden did not romance them.
Honorable mentions:
DA2 Merril with Isabela being first.
DAI Though I have not romanced her I like Josephine with Cassandra being first.

Your second favorites in each game are my favorites. DAO: Leliana DA2: Merrill DAI: Josephine

After all it's not cheating if the Warden did not romance them. I don't think it's about "cheating,"* but about resources. In DAO, they already devoted resources to Leliana's romance and character development arc. Doing another romance for her uses resources that could go to a new character. Romances are incredibly expensive, so it makes sense that they would want to use those in the way that best utilizes those resources, which means on new characters rather than rehash an old one. In addition, they have limited romance "slots," and these go to new characters. If they had Leliana as an option, that would be removing Cassandra or Josephine as an option. While I'm sure there are some that would be all for it, it's just not something they want to do. * Okay, well fan consideration for this might play a factor. You might not care, but there are plenty of people that would be annoyed that they were available at all.

Dorian is my other MageBuddy, but wheras Solas is a fellow nerd, Dorian is the Diva, who makes sure I don;t embarrass myself at balls and such. This isn't giving him nearly enough credit. He nerds out about magic right along with Solas, expresses great curiosity and fascination about many things of which he doesn't know or rarely sees, and similar things. He helped Alexius develop time magic. Distilling him down to being a "diva" is a pretty narrow read of the character. Oh yeah....it's been awhile since I've actually played DAI. Need to go back soon. I stand by my Diva assertion, but I forgot how much of a nerd he was. #MageNerds FTW

Plus I love both Cassandra and Josephine and would not like to see them gone. At least there's DAO. My Warden can always romance Leliana there.
Edit: And I do care for the story and continuity. I just always liked Leliana she was scary but sweet in DAO. In DAI it seems she's all business.

Favorites are:
DAO: I honestly can't remember the romances that well since it's been so long since I've played DAO. But it's between Morrigan/Leliana of course DA2: Isabela DAI: Josephine
Josephine is my favorite of them currently, but that'd probably change if I had played DA2 more recently instead lol. Thus, I voted for Isabela as my second favorite.
