I know, I know, it’s a really though question but I thought it could be really interesting. For me, as I am a quite emotionally driven person, my prefered video games are those that moved me, for many reasons. My choices would be, I think, in no specific order (I’ll try to keep it short): Zelda Ocarina of Time. I think it’s the first, or one of the first, video games I ever played. So many good memories. I used to play it with my father and brother. It’s the video game that first introduced me to the gaming world. I remember everything very fondly and with so much nostalgia; the amazing exploration, the impressive soundtrack, immersive sound effects, the exciting adventure… And the cuccos Silent Hill 1 or 2. I’ll choose the 2nd, I think. Both are great tho. Excellent soundtrack and atmosphere. The best horror game, imho. Both have an amazing story but, I don’t know, I get very emotional with Silent Hill 2, Mary’s letter gets me every time. Plus the symbolism in Silent Hill 2 is brilliant. Dragon Age Origins: It’s almost the only game that I find myself going back to, many times, after so many years. It is endearing in its own way. It as an epic plot and very compelling and lovable characters.
Special mention to Shadow of Colossus, Metal Gear Solid (all the series is pretty great, apart from the 4th game), The Last of Us and Metroid Prime (I’ll stop because I’ll never end otherwise!)

Star Trek The Next Generation: A Final Unity: One of my first games ever (so nostalgia bonus x 10 ). A fantastic take on the TNG universe and IMO an example of a perfect licensed game that takes the spirit of the original IP and translates it into game mechanics without changing it to accommodate some weird game design. When playing this game, you really felt like you were playing through a double (or maybe more like quatriple or so) episode of the series - and one of the best ones at that The storyline on its own was great, too. I am still playing through this game again every now and then today, it aged pretty well IMO. Mass Effect 1: I mean, the entire trilogy was a mile stone in gaming but despite its flaws (repetitive environments for side quests, the clunky MAKO, etc.) ME1 takes the cake just for introducing this phenomenal universe. I've never seen such a dense and well thought out scifi universe be implemented from scratch. Usually it takes a couple of implementations before a universe is really fleshed out but ME was incredible right out of the gate (if anything, it got more screwed up as the series went along). So the world building was fantastic but I also liked the gameplay itself. The combination of TPS and exploration gameplay, RPG mechanics and all the dialogues and decisions was perfect for me and I had never seen anything like this before. Add to that the atmosphere that came with the visuals. I remember standing on an uncharted ice planet for the first time in a white armor (maybe a liberator, it was early in the game and I wasn't leveled up much yet) and thinking "yea, this really looks like I am an astronaut on an extrasolar planet". Brilliant! Note: DA:O, which came out just a little later did just as well (if not better) on the world building and story and such. The reason ME wins for me is that I like the shooter gameplay more than the tactical pause-based combat and that I like scifi more than fantasy. Close call though. The Witcher 3: I was a fan of the Witcher series since day 1 but Witcher 3 really knocked it out of the park. There has been so much said about this game by me and others, it's no longer necessary to elaborate much on this one, I think. Suffice it to say that the amount of content, yet the level of detail that CDPR put into this title is downright astonishing. This game has a lot of objectively well designed features to it but even then, it manages to be greater than its parts. IMO it is correctly widely acknowledged as one of the best games ever made.

My favorite Witcher was Assassins of Kings. That's fair. I really do like the entire series and I think each part has their individual strengths and weaknesses. W3 just wins for me because I was so damn impressed at how much stuff they managed to put in while still maintaining that high a quality. That was a true masterstroke IMO.

Skyrim: best balance of narrative and player agency so far, hasn’t been dethroned. Plus, mods. NieR Automata: You’ve heard of ludonarrative dissonance? This game is uniquely the opposite. Plus it mind f’s you like you wouldn’t believe. OG Doom 1993: First immersive video game I ever played. The (literally) free hit that got me addicted. ——————- Runner-up: OG Zork (1980 Atari), text only adventure. Progenitor of all puzzle and point/click adventures. I never did figure out what to do with the bell, book and candle — no game wikis back then! Distant Runner-up: Computer Space, one of the first video arcade games. The local bowling alley had one. I had to beg my grandpa for quarters to play it. Good times!

Yes, it is a great game but I've never finished it (I played, and play, for many many hours tho, but I just get distracted with all the stuff and quests you can do that I never follow the main quest ).

1: Football Manager.
Even though I hardly play it anymore, there's not a game or even a game series that comes close to the amount of time I put into FM and it's predecessor Championship Manager. It's really not even close. I started playing in like 1995 with Championship Manager Italia. That's more than 2 decades ago.
2: Mass Effect Trilogy. 3: Crono Trigger

Dragon Age Inquisition: Terrific game. The best cast in gaming as well as the best music. Solid gameplay overall, the story was well executed and the RP elements allowed you a fair amount of control over what kind of character you wanted to be. (though it lacked the arc of Dragon Age 2). Yes it did have some flaws to it and some of its connections were lacking but overall probably the best package and value I've ever had in a game.
Ace Combat 5: This game is truly a classic and again has a thrilling politically relevant story, some truly outstanding moments, great music, and a great cast of characters.
Mass Effect 2: Great music, great cast...hmm I'm sensing a patern. Also as my first real RPG this did inform a lot of my expectations in the genre and it still holds up reasonably well.

I meant to add that Read Dead Redemption 2 has the potential to dethrone Skyrim from my Ultimate Three. We'll have to see if they deliver what they are promising.

The number of times Dragon Age Origins is appearing pleases me Dragon Age Origins (KOTOR introduced me to Bioware (and I loved it) but this is where they really got me. Civilization V...just one more turn And going old, old school...Quest for Glory: So You Want To Be A Hero... <<-- start of an addiction right there. Honourable mention is Batman Arkham City, because I'm a sucker for almost anything half decent that deals with superheroes and that game is well past "decent".

Tricky. I feel I should include an RPG, as these are generally favorite games, but somehow none quite make the list. So in chronological order:
1. Elite (BBC Micro, 1984)
When almost all other games at the time were just fun nonsense like Chuckie Egg and Frogger, Elite was utterly incredible. 3D space combat, trading, smuggling, bounty hunting, hundreds of systems, ship upgrades, docking, even missions and tough as hell aliens later on.
2. Resident Evil 1 & 2 (PlayStation, 1996/98)
Strangely, I didn’t actually play all that much myself. I tended to be “copilot”. Ie. watch my friend do all the zombie and monster killing, but we’d discuss puzzles, where to go, what to stash in the crates and piss ourselves at the voice acting. Happy days.
3. XCom EU/EW & 2 (PC, 2012-2018)
Probably my favorite current games. At least the ones I keep coming back to. Can’t stop myself starting a new campaign every now and then, despite there being so many other games out there to play, or frankly other things to do with my time. So much time spent.

Hmmmmmm. If I can only have three ...
1. Baldur's Gate 2
2. Grim Fandango
3. Dragon Age: Inquisition
... so I'd have to say I'm on the right message board.

Complete and utter no-brainer for me.
Dragon Age Origins Warcraft III Mass Effect 2
As far as I'm concerned all three titles are the absolute pinnacle of excellence, replayability and just pure enjoyment. Sure there's loads more that I'd like to add if I was allowed to make a top-10 or top-20, but those three are the games I constantly return to, and I think it's safe to say that I've probably played all three at least once every year since the date I purchased them. DA:Origins remains my favorite video game - period; and the other two follow close behind.

Zero Escape Series. Scenario, layered twists, overarching plot and the characters had me entranced and shackled to my Vita. I can't ommit a series from a personal list of favorites, while I own it on almost every platform it released.
Well, since it's a trilogy my 3 spots are occupied. But ...
Dark Souls 3. Even if I like a directly told story, I'm also fond of an approach that avoids to interrupt the flow of gameplay. If it weren't for the tighter exploration and exhilarating combat I would give this spot to Breath of the Wild, however Dark Souls 3 just has the edge of doing what BotW does, but with more focus and challenge.
Street Fighter 5. Specifically the current AE edition, future updates included. Over 6K matches and countless hours played, it is my No.1 go to time-sink even 2 years after release.

Given the amount of love shown for Dragon Age Origins in this thread and others (a love I totally share), if I were a developer I'd be thinking: "Hmm, it does seem self evident that a lot of people do prefer this particular style of game. Would it not make sense for us to explore this in relation to future projects?"
I doubt that Bioware can now be shifted from their no-holds-barred path of pseudo-open-world, multiplayer-focused, console-focused action/RPG releases; but surely a developer with a somewhat more flexible ideology must see the potential for another deep, immersive single player Western RPG that isn't just five hours of main plot padded out with a zillion fetch quests and collectibles.... No?

I'm going to loophole the hell out of this question. Doing it by platform, and doing series instead of single games. PC Half-Life series (includes G-Mod) Mass Effect Trilogy Dishonored series PS3 Prototype Infamous The Darkness PS2 God of War series (yes, include those later titles not on PS2 ) Metal Gear (yes, include those later titles not on PS2 ) GTA (yes, includes... you get the idea) Multiplatform (because fuck it, that's a category now too) Mortal Kombat (especially 9) Force Unleashed Doom (especially Doom 3) (it's on xbox and shit, it counts) Also FEAR, Crysis and Elder Scrolls, because at this point, why not?

Brilliant! Pretty much this for ME1.My other two picks: Doom (Series): Its Doom, not much else needs to be said. The OG titles kicked off a genre and are still good fun today, Doom 3 took things into an interesting turn and the 2016 game is my current contender for best game of this generation so far. Metro 2033 (Redux): The atmosphere, gameplay and setting all combine to make a superb title. Just like the book it should be experienced at least once, especially considering the next entry which is coming next February and has the potential to be the best of the trilogy. Its bleak, dark and pessimistic, all the things a post-apocalyptic story needs.

Great game indeed, the best of its kind, I would say. But I'm usually very bad at FPS games (I mean it, I suck so bad). I like them, but I get very frustrated when I play them .

So many games that it's hard to pick then individually 🤔
Halo combat evolved, mass effect one, Oblivion, star craft, age of empires, JakII, dragon age origins, D@DO, etc etc. So many to pick I don't think I could do a top 3, furthermore I'm sure I could rotate it every time I'm asked.
