I know each area you can unlock has a Reccomended Level in its description before you unlock it.

Areas like Crestwood and Western approach can be unlocked pretty much when the story recommends it. Emerald Graves and Exalted plains I'd say about mid teens say level 14-15 up you can probably get away with unlocking Hissing wastes here too although I wouldn't recommend you do the main quest line there until level 20 as the main quest leads you straight into the path of a High dragon(Sandy Howler).Though there is a shop that sells top level armour in the wastes that isn't too far from where you enter so it can be worth at least opening up the zone earlier for that. For the Emprise I'd say upper teens 17-19 would be my recommendation. That's generally the rule of thumb I tend to follow when playing DAI.

ok the one thing most people have said or told me in a previous post the decent dlc...can i do that anytime or is there a point i should do it You can do it anytime after you've unlocked it, but you really ought to wait until after you've done Jaws of Hakkon. The Inquisitor gains a skill in Jaws that is very useful against a certain type of enemy you will encounter in Descent. These are near-endgame DLC, and can be done after defeating the final boss in the main game if you so choose, though party banter in Jaws will still talk about Corypheus as if you hadn't dealt with him yet. Do Jaws once you reach at least level 17 or so, then Descent after that.

Do everything at the lowest level possible, more fun that way

The DLC's all become available once you make it to Skyhold but it is recommended you at least wait until around Level 20 before you play them.

Especially as that skill is very useful when you need to revive companions as well.

I did the Jaws dlc at level 9. Killed the ice giant and met with the leader. Just doing those leveled me up to about level 12. I believe I've done Descent at around level 14. Trespasser I started at level 14. For that playthrough. I did enough to move the story forward. I would suggest, for someone playing the dlc's for the first time, be at least level 20.

I have never tried the DLC right at Skyhold. I think I always wait until I'm somewhere around 20-22 to start. I like to collect all the shards for cold resistance bonus, as well as the belts. And of course the extra cold resistance you get from collecting them in JOH. I fully upgrade cold resistance tonics before heading in. I always go in there prepared, those Hakkonites can one shot you with cold.
And agreed about doing the Descent after. That ability you get in JOH is super handy.

Doing Descent at a lower level (16-18) makes it easier, imo, than waiting until later since the enemies scale with you. At lower difficulties, the ability you get in JoH isn't really necessary.
