I hate this game before I even played it. I skipped DAO because it didn't work on my laptop, so I thought - okay maybe it's too old, let's go straight to DAO. I bought the game of the year edition and everything installed correctly. When I hit play, the screen just goes black for a moment as if it were loading, and then - bam, straight back to Origin. No message of the game crashing or anything. What did I try so far? - running both Origin and the game as administrator - disabling Origin in-game - restarting of everything, obviously - repairing the game - cursing at it repeatedly using the worst swear words I know - updating graphic card drivers - added the game to the "do-not-disturb"-list of my antivirus software My system is running MEA without any trouble on the highest setting, so I doubt it's a system performance issue. Also, I am not using any screencapturing/recording software. I've never had any problems with any game I ever played, except for DAO and DAI. What is this devilry?! Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? Thanks in advance.

perhaps check the "profile_options" within /documents/bioware/Dragon Age Inquisition/Save/
look for these lines:
GstRender.FullscreenEnabled 1 GstRender.FullscreenMode 0 GstRender.FullscreenRefreshRate 60.000000 GstRender.FullscreenScreen 0 GstRender.Gamma 0.500000 GstRender.Mantle 0 GstRender.MantleEnabled 0
set them like that...
you can also change GstRender.FullscreenEnabled 1 GstRender.FullscreenMode 0 to GstRender.FullscreenEnabled 0 GstRender.FullscreenMode 3
that will make the game do some weird window stuff, but it might let it launch, and if it starts, you can try changing the resolution and whatnot once you're in the menus

For some reason, there is no "save"-folder in the game's directory (the one one the boot drive). I thought something went wrong during installation, so I re-installed the game over night. Still the same bug. Still no "save"-folder. So either it's really something going wrong during installing, or the "save"-folder would be created during first launch, but yeah, I don't get as far as that.
I did some research on my own and if it is that full-screen-bug, I just need a way to launch the game in windowed mode, but not the way you described above. Is there any other way?
*sigh* This sucks.

Pretty much all games create their save game and configuration folders on launch if they are not detected. This also means that you can delete them as a last resort if your configuration has gone totally wrong.
DAI is a Frostbite game, and Frostbite can be configured on start without requiring said configuration folder and files to exist. To do so, find the folder that contains the game's main .exe file and create a file named "user.cfg" there. Put any Frostbite configuration lines into this file. It will be read on startup and used to initialize the engine.
Try putting the lines from reggie's post into this file and see what happens. If it is no good or causes other problems, you can safely delete the "user.cfg" file again. If the game starts up that way, it should create the required save game and configuration folders. Go to the options menu and set its screen mode to "Windowed full screen". Quit the game and see what happens if you rename the "user.cfg" to something else. If it still works, it can be safely deleted then.

Just to clarify, you mean to put just reg's lines ins the "user.cfg" file I should create? Nothing else?

Yes, exactly. Only reggie's lines go into the "user.cfg" file. This file is often used to set Frostbite variables that are out of the scope of a game's options menu and it does not require a full configuration set. Any settings not contained in "user.cfg" will be set to their default values or to those found in the game's regular config files if present.

Next is to look at logs, like dxdiag. In Windows, select Start and enter dxdiag into the search box on the taskbar. Select dxdiag from the results. Then you can dump the outpu here in a spoiler, and we Gileadan can look at it

The game has finally launched! Indeed it was my anti-virus software that interfered with the launching process - I looked at the crash report and found the file that caused it right there in the Avast directory. I deinstalled it but after googling a bit I think there's even a way to get both run in parallel. Thank you regack and Gileadan for not leaving me alone in the dark.

I was wondering if it's possible to do the temporary-disable of your AntiVirus, for like an hour or whatever, and see if the game runs. Glad it's working now though!

I think Avast has Game Mode thingy if I'm not wrong? You should try right clicking on the icon and selecting it. Or do what Reg said.

For some reason I thought she'd already put it into the Avast whitelist or however it works, so I was thinking the temporary disable would be better. Maybe, though, it needs to have not just DAI, but also Origin or some other stuff in there (the whitelist).

I got the exact same crash. For some reason I thought she'd already put it into the Avast whitelist or however it works, so I was thinking the temporary disable would be better. Maybe, though, it needs to have not just DAI, but also Origin or some other stuff in there (the whitelist). Yes, I did that with both Origin and the game. I found the info that the file causing the crash was not supposed to be there at all, so I will re-install Avast today to see if that does something to DAI or not.

As the evil spirits had left the machine of the owl, suddenly, both the determent device for machine illnesses and the game with moving pictures co-existed peacfully and all lived happily ever after.

The game like I said in my thread did launch successfully and also what did you do in the exclusion and "do not disturb" list?

I can't remember the name, but I can check if I still have the crash log later today.
Also, after re-installing the game worked fine without putting it on the white list. I just did that to be on the safe side. If you choose to do the same, you can do so by following this guide. (I just used the game directories and the one where Origin is located.)
