Detlaff van der Eretein from The Witcher 3, a vampire who finds human society alien, You can feel sympathy for the guy looking for his kidnapped love and forced to kill people to get her back from a blackmailer, only it was all a con by the girl who wanted to usurp a duchy. Jacques de Aldersburg, a magnificent bastard in The Witcher 1 who almost took over a nation with his holy order of religious fanatics, if his reasons and justifications sound familiar its because they are, Geralt the PC taught him his ideals and he took them and twisted them into what they became, ultimately he believes he is trying to save the human race from annihilation, and is willing to take drastic steps to stop it. Kane from Command and Conquer, The leader, Prophet, and Messiah of The Brotherhood of Nod, an immortal alien who has lived among humans for years and guided them, he orchestrated 2 world wars in an attempt to conquer the world so that he and his followers could obtain "ascension", leaving earth and finding a new home on another world.

Any villain from MGS 1-4 counts as well. Also, Sovereign, back when the Reapers were cool, and not just the toys of a stupid holographic brat in desperate need of a space rattle.

The Tyranids of Warhammer 40K. They don't hide behind the zealous fanaticism of the Imperium. They don't try and excuse losing their souls to Chaos as a form of 'freedom'. They don't look down on others with a sneer like the Eldar. They don't encourage racism and genocide as service to the "greater good". Political squabbling is totally absent from them, and even the Chaos gods, with their 'Great Game' are frustrated by these creatures and their all encompassing motivation. They simply are what they are, no more no less; and, as horrifying as the Great Devourer is, at least the Tyranids are honest with their intentions.

Looked for a thread about this here but there doesn't appear to be one, so I decided to make it. Post your favorite videogame villains and explain why you enjoyed them.
Gaunter O'Dimm (The Witcher 3): I like the sense of mystery this character gives, as well as the fact that he is a personification of pure evil hidden behind a cool and sophisticated, even witty demeanor.
Handsome Jack (Borderlands 2): I loved his persona and sense of humor.
Letho of Gulet (The Witcher 2): I liked how he appears to be nothing more than a simple brute throughout the game, but upon further inspection he's reasonably sophisticated.
Loghain Mac Tir (Dragon Age Origins): He divided the Dragon Age fanbase and his actions were understandable but built on false premises. A lot of people criticize him for the wrong reasons, which makes me sympathize with him even more.
Almalexia (Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind/ESO): She's interesting because of how skilled a manipulator she is. Initially, she rpesents herself as a motherly figure but transitioning from ESO to Morrowind you get to see her descent into megalomania and madness. She succeeds in besting one of her equals and arguably comes very close to achieving her ends.
Saren Arterius (Mass Effect): He was a good rival/foil to Shepard. Out of the three main antagonists in the original trilogy (the other two being Harbinger and The Illusive Man), he was the only one I found to be respectable.
I agree with you in two of them. (Letho and Loghain ) Well, Handsome Jack is a great villain as well. Classic witty, intelligent, charming sociopath. Pyramid Head (Silent Hill 2) and all that it represents. He is the portrayal of the twisted and harrowing psyche of James Sunderland.
Scott Shelby (Heavy Rain) . He's not a villain per se (he is a serial killer nonetheless). He is a playable character and an overall nice guy; you start to feel affection and empathy for him and then you realize he was the Origami Killer.
The fireflies (The last of Us). Again, they're not villains per se. They are villains for the protagonist, ofc. There's a lot of moral ambiguity in this game
I would pick someone of the MSG franchise as well, but I don't know whom, as everyone is always betraying and double-crossing everyone else. So f*cked up.

I agree with Saren and Loghain.
I'd also like to add Sarevok Anchev from Baldur's Gate. His plan was pretty logical despite his alignment being chaotic evil. I preferred him to Irenicus.

Although, he's more of an anti-villain than a villain.

Gaunter was damned good. Cheeky guy who completely misleads and doesn't even bother to show off his power to intimidate. He does what he does because he can. As much as I liked Eredin and the Red Rider/Wild Hunt in general, the Aen Elle king gets upstaged quite a bit due to a lack of screen presence. Another of my favorite all time villains happens to be this walking, talking concentration of swagger and quips known as The True King Ardyn Izunia. This guy takes a mediocre story and just carries it to something far greater due in no small part to Deran DePaul's voice acting and his connection to all the events surrounding the player in FFXV. Like Gaunter, he's a true wolf in sheep's clothing for most of the story and just wrecks shop not to show off, but because he can.

In books: Professor Moriarty The Tripod species from The Tripod Series by John Christopher. The Shrikes from the Hungry City Chronicles/Mortal Engines Quartet -simply run -terminators combined with retractable scissor hands.
From Comics Max Steel: Miles Dread -The TV version... ok-ish
Marvel: Doctor Doom -NOT the idiocy portrayed in television or the crap movies. DC: Darksied -AGAIN! -NOT the idiocy portrayed in television or the crap movies. In games: Dragon Age: Logain is an anti-hero in my book so... nope.
My villian here is the corrupt of the veil -wouldn't be in this mess if not for them. Andraste -Well she is. You have already met her -she is...
Flemeth... Honestly has no one seen this yet?
Driver Series: The Mob and Jericho
FREELANCER: The NOMADS! Jade Empire: Master Li KOTOR: Darth Revan and Darth Malak Mass Effect Series: Uh... Those already mentioned. DUH!
Master Of Orion: Antaran's -a race truely scarred by their history.
Need For Speed: Most Wanted 2005: Razor Project Nomads: The Insane Master Builder. Homeworld Series: The Taiidan and the Hiigaran -yes both are not blameless. Starcraft: Menisk -don't care if butchered the name -still him.
Probably more but will stop here to avoid brain overload if I go through all 350+ games I have played in my gaming tenure.

Not really villains per say, though they were the book's antagonists. The alien Scramblers from Peter Watts novel Blindsight.
Hyper intelligent aliens that possessed no consciousness as we humans would understand it, but had none the less developed technology and a civilization. They were so foreign to what we would consider 'normal' that they even treated human language itself as a form of attack.

From a recent read: The Jackal from The Day of the Jackal.
Cold, calculating and meticulous. Even when his cover gets blown and the authorities start closing in once he nears his target, he never skips a beat and only truly makes a mistake in the vital climax.

Also forgot about this man: No, not Stark... Norman Osborn! I can only hope they can get someone to match Dafoe at the very least when/if he's introduced to the MCU. Don't fuck it up like you did Peter Parker.

I liked the Markers/Brethren Moons/Necromorphs in the Dead Space series - implacable and mysterious, and capable of causing psychological disturbances in humans.
Also Neymar, because PSG beat me in FIFA: The Journey the other day.

I was about to mention Master Li the Glorious Strategist looks like someone beat me to it. Your mentor, trainer in martial combat, instilled in you very specific flaws that he knew about to exploit when he finally betrayed you to become a god Emperor of the Jade Empire having secretly been the Emperors brother the whole time. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Jon Irenicus from Baldur's Gate II, been ages since i've played it so really testing my memory here, has plans to become a god, manipulates the protagonists via his spy Yoshimo and even allows himself to get captured so he can take over the prison to which he was sent, guy has the Drow playing to his tune and has them attack his old home to serve his plans, manages to steal the players and his sister's soul and almost manages to complete his plans. Haytham Kenway from Assassins Creed III, under his leadership the Colonial Assassins were wiped out to but a single man, guy had plans upon plans throughout the revolutionary war to influence events and shape the future United States, deposing of those he viewed as incompetent and self serving.

Sephiroth is my fave villain, not only is he badarse and amazing, that Masamune is amazing btw. But he's a tragic villain. Experimented on while in the womb; he serves Shinra loyally for many years before finding out he two was just an experiment, then he snaps a little, gains godly powers and decides to carry on his mums legacy.
Megatron is number 2, he's more complex than the original series defined him as. Tho I by all means mean Gen 1 Megatron, best design too. But his lore runs deep now.
Magneto is my number 3 pick, but only 3 and not 2, coz he's not technically a villain. He's a true mutant hero. Everything he does is long game thinking for the survival of the mutant race. His is the most tragic of tales. He survived the holocaust after all. So he's acutely aware of what the humans can and will do to his mutant brethren. I mean hell, the history Bishop and Cable know shows that that's exactly what the humans do.
So I really liek complex villains not just evil for evil's sake.
