The only games I bought that were released this year was FFXV: Windows Edition and Vampyr. FFXV did not suck me in. Even though I saw the movie and anime shorts before playing the game as recommended. And I've yet to play Vampyr until it is fully patched. Though I don't own them I heard Odyssey and Spiderman PS4 are good games. A game I was really looking forward to was Pathfinder: Kingmaker, but heard it was riddled with bugs. I will wait until the bugs are fixed.
So my GOTY is: FFXV: WE

And I've yet to play Vampyr until it is fully patched. What's still the matter with it? I mean, the combat is clunky in general but I doubt they'll "fix" it. I got through it shortly after release without any major bugs. Boyfriend had one broken quest that messed up a few minor NPC things but he could finish the game too.

I'm not sure if the gaming industry has changed so much or I have - maybe we're simply getting picky because of age since all them young casual rascals seem to be just fine with the recent games? For me there are less and less games I look forward to or interest me every year, I find games get more shallow and less immersive, storytelling declines, atmosphere dwindles, its just less and less of the good stuff. Only online multiplayer is totally thriving, a feature I'm not really interested in, sadly. A few games have totally surprised me though, like Senuas Sacrifice, it was very original that was quality how I like it. Also Metro is absolutely excellent, though its not very ''recent'' anymore. But Exodus looks very good already. Perhaps it's us, I wondered that too. But I also feel that the rise of open world style games did a lot to dampen my enthusiasm as I prefer shorter linear narratives, and no I'll never play games like Overwatch or Fortnite. There are also less chances being taken, so we now have to look at smaller companies to deliver interesting IPs. Trouble is there games are often smaller in scope, and I am fond of an old fashioned AAA game. Literally the only game on the horizon for me is the new DA, hence my attempts at broadening my tastes and trying new things.
That's one way to make me feel old at the ripe old age of twenty three.
Either I'm old alongside the two of you, or the young 'uns aren't having quite as much fun as you'd think.

For me it's Vampyr or Origins. Odyssey might take the prize but I need a break from Asscreed for a while.

I don't play many games these days since everything is mostly shallow trash like fortnite, but currently for GOTY, my list looks like this:
1. God of War 2. Detroit: Become Human 3. Spider-Man

I have a gut feeling GOW might take it over RDR2. While both are phenomenal at the presentation front, GOW might win because it doesn't devide critics with it's mechanics as much. It wouldn't suprise me if Spiderman steals a few awards, but I'll put my money on Kratos this year.

RDR2 is averaging 9.7 from 89 critic reviews on metacritic, whereas God of War averaged 9.4 from 118 critical reviews on metacritic. However, if you look at the user scores you'll see that the mechanics are dividing the consumers more than it is the critics, RDR2 has a user score of 7.7 and God of War 4 has a user score of 9.2. So not all is well with the force regarding RDR2, and as I'm looking down the user reviews I'm seeing a lot of "flawed gem, 5/6 out of 10, don't trust professional reviews". And that's what continues to piss people off, game reviewers and journalists refuse to step on big publishers toes by reporting on flaws and concerns consumers would care about. I can't see RDR2 losing out on GOTY 2018, it's too big a juggernaut. 700 million on the opening weekend? That's huge. And traditionally speaking I continue to see a refusal on the part of most game journalists to stand in the way of these juggernauts and what they want, which is being able to paste "winner of a thousand GOTY awards" on the cover. For me, Pillars of Eternity 2 was GOTY 2018.

2018 was an excellent year TBH.
Kingdom Come, Post Scriptum, DCS: F/A-18C Hornet, Shadow of the Tomb Raider...
And DCS: F-14 Tomcat was announced...
I mean, I only played the first two myself, but I'm pretty sure KC:D wins RPG of the year, the Hornet is exceptional, and if Post Scriptum doesn't win FPS of the year, then something is completely and utterly fucked in this world.

Red Dead Redemption 2. Emotional rollercoaster. I'd have said God Of War 4 before this past week. Spider-Man was in the running but the dlc practices have disqualified it for me.

That's a good point.
My gut feeling comes from the discussions of those outlets. While they gave the game a high rating they don't seem to be on the same page regarding pacing and the mechanics, which seems to be a deal breaker for some of them. Some reviews are still in progress and might consider that more than the polish and writing.
But speaking of numbers you're right. In the end I wouldn't mind either outcome.

Have I even played four 2018 games... I think not!
But among them Assassin's Creed : Origins was the better. That ancient Egypt is awesome! AC is playing safe with the winning historical formula unless they rush it and screw it up.
Like the first game ever in which horseback riding was fun was AC 1. They got the rest of gameplay formula from Prince of Persia games and improved them.
Well I haven't finished any new long game since DA:I (2014)! AC games, DS games, POP games all unfinished!

And traditionally speaking I continue to see a refusal on the part of most game journalists to stand in the way of these juggernauts and what they want, which is being able to paste "winner of a thousand GOTY awards" on the cover. There is a very conspicuous difference between review scores and user scores of RD2, yes. I haven't played it yet, so I'm just guessing. But this doesn't necessarily mean that the reviews were bought or glossing over flaws. ALL the reviews I read said that the game is a technical open world marvel but admitted that the gameplay isn't exactly fun in the traditional sense. Maybe they should have put mor emphasis on that, but it's there.
What *I* think is going on is that people expected something different from what the game turned out to be. I don't believe it was false advertizing though. I ASSUME the average buyer is a teenager or in their early twenties and wanted a WILD wild west action game. Instead, RDR2 is more of a frontier simulator. The real target audience who enjoys slow-paced games is quite different, I imagine.
The majority of people value gameplay above everything else. It needs to be fun to fight. Me, I see these amazing landscapes and all I want to do is just ride around and enjoy the beauty. The game deliberately slows the player down. It was a conscious decision to make a game about brushing your horse and cleaning your weapon and just BEING there, doing mundane things. Talking to average people about their average lives. That is not necessarily a flaw. It just isn't fun to some people. Hell, maybe even most people.
So it's fine to be disappointed expecting GTA with horses and voice that but I don't think the problem lies with game journalism on this one. Bought reviews are a problem but if one bothered to actually get informed about the game, one would see that none claim the game has super fun gameplay. They all say it's slow, very slooow. Every videoclip of the game looks slow too.
Blame Rockstar for making a beautiful but boring game, if you want. That's something that CAN be criticized for sure. What the reviews praise is being very successful at creating this immersive world and storytelling. So Rockstar imo succeeded in what they set out to do. It just doesn't happen to be what most people enjoy.

I can't really say who deserves Game of The Year because my gaming habits usually aren't me buying new games that year (it's mainly replaying favorites while occasionally playing the newest game I was interested in). Because of that, I'm pretty biased with putting Spider-man PS4 on my GOTY.
Heck, the amount of nominations Spider-man PS4 got in the Game Awards is insane!
