What's the opinion here about the latest news that Microsoft wants to milk Fallout because of the TV show popularity and is trying to get FO5 released within this decade?
I would throw money at ANY other studio making FO5 at this point. Give it to Obsidian or InXile. This would be a dream come true for me. Pretty sure a lot of people have been hoping for this since everything is owned by Microsoft now. I would even be fine with FO5 running on the Starfield engine. Give us another NV, PLEASE! Starfield LOOKS fine. It just had shit writing and an ungodly amount of loading screens because you were forced to fast travel all the time. This would not be an issue with a new Fallout game.
Obsidian isn't the same company it used to be anymore either judging by The Outer World's at times awful writing. I just want another Fallout, dammit. I'll even play an isometric one. Wasteland 3 was pretty great and the closest thing to Fallout we got in recent history.
The only alternative would be to drastically increase Bethesda's headcount and have two teams, one working on TES and one on Fallout. Something I wish BioWare would return to again. I would prefer Fallout to go to somebody else though, pretty fed up with Bethesda. But those are Microsoft's two options.
Of course no matter what happens FO5 won't release for another 4-5 years, so by then of course all the current buzz will have died down. You can't go chasing popularity like that. You'll always be too late. And the last thing we need is a game made by corporate design. Some lazy cash grab. I've had enough of that with FO76.
In any case, I am super excited for a new Fallout before TES6, especially because it implies it might have to go to another studio since is very busy with TES6.

After 5 hours of playing Fallout 4 with the new update, I can say it isn't the mods that is causing the problems. For the most part it runs fine (haven't tested Boston yet) but the only problem I have is that the frame rate drops randomly from time to time, to the point that it freezes. And that only occurred whenever I tried to explore downtown Boston, followed up by the game CTD'ing from the past update.

I disabled all 50 of my remaining mods (I had 70 a week ago).
Then I switched them back on one at a time, running and bunny-hopping between Red Rocket and Abernathy Farm (through cell boundaries) to see if I could trigger any stuttering or frame rate drops.
3 of the mods caused such an issue, a scrapping mod, a settler mod and sadly the Unofficial Patch (even after an update yesterday), so I've replaced those two and just skipped the latter for now.
Let's see what happens...

In a total coincidence to the release of the show I picked up Fallout 4 a few weeks back. For all intents and purposes, this is my first Fallout game. I had tried to play New Vegas, and Fallout 3, but nether really clicked with me.
And I must say I am thoroughly impressed by it. I have reached a screaming halt with the main story, and I've simply been entertaining myself with looting and then investing back into my pet settlements.
Now I would say the writing is... serviceable. As said, in the paragraph above, I have reached a point in the main story where my intrinsic motivation has certainly ebbed. The factions are also quite dull.
That said, I do like some of the companion characters like Piper, MacCready, and Hancock, and the smaller scale quests can be quite well written.
Settlement building, and exploration make this game great though. Bethesda do get a ton of criticism now, but they construct worlds in a way few developers can(not played Starfield). I would personally put this game as up there with the very best of last generation, with the Witcher 3, and Red Dead.
I will certainly play F3, and NV at some point, but I do secretly hope a remaster will be released - perhaps with the increased interest in the show. It's a pity they won't be released on ps5.

The fact that exploration and looting serves a purpose for gear upgrades and settlements makes it SO rewarding to me. I would go raid the brewery for glass so I could build a greenhouse. I LOVED it. FO4 has by far the best map compared to FO3 and NV. 76 actually has a pretty cool map too but the graphics remain kind of eye cancer to me in that game. Modded FO4 still holds up and looks for better.
I'm one of the few people who enjoyed the main story a lot. I liked how all the factions are involved in the main plot. Heaps better than the garbage main story of Starfield imo. Side content is seriously lacking though, FO3/Nav did side quests much better. That's my only gripe with the game. If you love the exploration and base building in FO4, don't buy Starfield. Both suck hard in that game. Everything I used to love about Bethesda is gone.
Last night in bed I realized I had to build one more settlement on my desert overhaul. Oops! Didn't build one in the glowing sea. I have glowing see settlements on my vanilla-like savedile but with the desert overhaul the glowing sea looks radically different, it's GREEN with lush fine trees. Really pretty. So now I guess I need to do that before I update for London...
I could play FO4 forever. There are now like 4 amazing overhauls that completely change the look of the game for when you get bored after a few years.
With London coming out soon and several other conversion mods being worked on, this game is still kicking!

I persevered through my initial frustrations about survival mode, and I think I’d now recommend it. The dialogue problem was in the game running above 120 fps, because it’s an old game and I’m just running vanilla. Would have thought they’d have fixed that by now. Capped the frame rates and it’s fine.
I think survival mode was really designed for fans who wanted to up the challenge, rather than new players or people who haven’t for a long time. So fully understanding the perks and mechanics, knowing where to find good stuff easily and early, knowing what’s a dangerous place to go, where the beds and doctors are etc would all help a lot.
The biggest difficulty is definitely early game and I really didn’t do myself any favours with my initial build. Didn’t plan what perks I wanted at all and ended up spending most of my early points on special stats to get to the perks I really wanted. Had weak endurance, so couldn’t resist disease (which is a big problem early on) and not enough intelligence for chemist which you need to craft antibiotics. Also made the mistake of going to bed hungry a fair bit which lowers endurance, so I was picking up diseases all the time. Which meant working my way to diamond city far earlier than I probably should have to find a doctor. All while building up my strength to get the strong back perk and be able to carry stuff, despite it being useless in combat for a sneaky sniper.
Getting settlements is practically essential in survival mode, if only to put down a bed and water source (hand pumps are actually better as you can drink from them and fill bottles). Later on, setting up supply chains is definitely a good idea, because no fast travel.
Took me quite a long time to go back sanctuary and pick up the minuteman quests, but if I was starting over, I’d probably do that that much earlier to get the settlements in easier areas. Worth taking Preston with you for those, partly for approval rating, but also so you don’t have to hike back to sanctuary to turn them in every time. Then put off retaking the castle until you’re ready to ditch him for someone more fun, as he’ll head straight over there.
Also joined the BoS, for the vertibird access. I don’t remember from before, but they must be quite underwhelming in normal modes. In survival they are an absolute god send if you want to travel right across the map safely and reasonably quickly.
Now have about 15 settlements around the place, mostly connected by supply chains. Haven’t tried to grow many by more than a couple of extra people needed for trade routes. Most are still small farms with enough beds and a few turrets for defense, but everyone is quite well armed and armoured, especially the provisioners. Hangman’s ally is my “home base” for exploring Cambridge and N Boston. No settlers, only companions waiting for me to pick them up. I’ve grown county crossing a bit as a hub and for exploring that side of map. Danse and Codsworth helping to defend that, as I have to keep Danse away from several other companions, the big jerk. Recently added the Castle and Jamaica Plain. Jamaica Plain will probably be another unpopulated home base for exploring south, while I’ve built up the castle population a bit, plugged some holes in the wall and added some shops. It’s not a great position for a hub, but I felt I had to put in a bit of effort there..
Overall, I really like it. It slows the pace down a lot, particularly early on, as everything is a bigger risk, plus the legwork of course. I rarely risk going into random buildings when I find them just to see what’s there. It’s usually either for a quest or occasionally scavenging for resources. Either way, I make sure I’m rested, hydrated, fed and prepared. But to balance that out a bit, they slowed the respawn rate down a lot, so once you clear an area you can run around a bit quite safely for a fair while.
Other random notes- the padded armour and later dense material mods are practically essential for any chance of surviving grenades. Took me a while to figure that out. And I can’t believe I didn’t spot the special book in sanctuary until after I’d raised most of my stats to where I needed them.

I persevered through my initial frustrations about survival mode, and I think I’d now recommend it. My next PT on a new mod list will be survival too. I might cheat a little though and install a tweaked survival mod that lets me disable stuff I find too annoying. Might also go for saving anytime because I really don't need that kind of frustrations. Dying all the time will be enough. I'd rather not die to an exploding car I lightly touched. Bethesda games are too wonky. Will have to see. Thanks for your impressions! Since base building is my favorite thing to do I'll take any excuse to build up more of them. When I do my The Last Of Us overhaul and play "Joel" I might build cute little survival bunkers and tiny farms for a change. Mostly just safe houses, plus a few bigger trading hubs.

I used this mod for survival mode, it maybe is what you're looking for: mods.bethesda.net/en/fallout4/mod-detail/4360673However, I don't know if it's on PC.
