To celebrate the 20 years of the first game, the modders or rather proper studio developers now decided to drop a trailer for the upcoming second half of their remake of HL1:
It does look fucking awesome. The second part is set to be released in Q2 of 2019.

Oooohhhhh! I had a hankering to play Black Mesa again the other day but held back to wait for Xen after all. Really looking forward to it and to fighting my way through the research facility and now some alien worlds again.
And the trailer looks fantastic by the way.

The best part is that it looks so different, but in the good way. Since Valve could never do Xen more interesting, now these guys are doing it. God damn, it makes me want the Blue Shift and Op. Force remakes too, I think those ended up in the limbo.

Since Black Mesa is a proper Steam game these days, I'd say they went straight from modding team to dev team.
Well, they definitely earned it. I played BM back in the modding days but I still bought the Steam version again, just to give them some money.

Well the full version is gonna be a paid version (not that they don't deserve it), but it's price tag is like 30-40 dollars I think, which is dirt cheap taking into account this definitely is a proper full game.

Will the Xen chapter be extended then? I don't remember it being very long in the original game.

Will the Xen chapter be extended then? I don't remember it being very long in the original game. I believe so, and by quite a lot. They keep calling this "the second half of the game" in the original HL Xen was like 1/4 of the game at best. They're taking a lot of liberties to make it look cooler and more different, I'm sure the basics will still be there (gonarch fight, etc), but they'll expand the overall thing. The sections seen in the trailer, most of them are nothing like we've seen before. The only black mesa remains on vanilla Xen were dead people, here we are seeing structures and buildings even, as in there was much bigger expedition to the border world.

I am not sure if this is still up to date as I remember reading this years ago, but didn't they want to sort of reestablish Valves original intentions for XEN?
Originally, Valve had this idea, that while at Xen, Freeman sort of accidentally starts the Vortigaunt uprising (which is actually taken up in Half Life 2). They didn't have time (or the technical resources with the old engine) to really go down this route but one can still see remnants of the idea, e.g. when you go through that factory in Xen. However, in the original HL, you still just fight the Vortigaunts in Xen, instead of allying with them.
IIRC, the Black Mesa team was (at least in some early point in Xen development) attempting to get back and extend on the idea, showing how Freeman starts and gets involved in the Vortigaunt uprising while in Xen. But I am not sure if this is still the plan or if the idea has been scrapped in the mean time.
I think it would be cool if they did it that way, as it would also tie HL1 and 2 together somewhat better.

I kinda want to be a bit in the dark to not ruin the surprise I guess, HL is my favorite franchise of all times after all. It might be explained in their website, I know they do a lot of blogs and shit. Unrelated, but I also played a demo of some other remake because I saw a comparison video of the two (black mesa and this other one) not sure if that thing is still going? the demo was pretty nice, done in Unreal 4, although at times it still felt like just Source 2 with some lightning added and fuckton of post processing, which made the thing run at 28 cinematic FPSs... it was pretty cool looking and detailed though. Can't remember the name... project lambda or something?
