Good luck with the visa and all that. As the poster above put it, I'm a filthy urbanite, so I can't answer any of your answers wrt competition shooting. I've never owned or carried a gun, but I have used a shotgun a long time ago. Ideally, I'd get a diplomatic pass and live/work in Australia for the US government. I'm at least a decade from getting a job like that though, and now that I'm out of the Army, I'm not going to get stationed down there. I'm thinking PhD. study or another Master's could work so I could get a student visa. Problem is, all the grad programs down there are either way too expensive (albeit good), or in parts of the country that are less than favorable (University of South Australia?) I don't have as much information on that as you guys would though. I'd rather live in Victoria or Queensland. Weird thing is, I consider myself a filthy urbanite (the American version, though I'd try it in Aus). Adelaide's a pretty comfy place to live, if it weren't for the massive unemployment I'd probably move there.

I've heard it's also fairly boring, but from what I've read, it might actually be the best city to start out in, with decent prices, decent wages, good climate. Melbourne is where I'd love to end up, but I also like several places along the Northeastern coast like Cairns, Townsville, even Mackay (never thought I'd say that as an American).

That's American Football, silly. League and Union is where it's at. You should come here instead. Far less things that are likely to kill you, and our accent is slightly less grating... I think. I'm live in the lower North Island in a region called the Wairarapa.

I'm live in the lower North Island in a region called the Wairarapa. I already had that discussion in the Soccer thread lol. Suffice to say, a ton and a half of meat and steel charging at you at top speed just makes life so much more interesting. I'm definitely thinking about it. You guys have a much more varied climate and geography, mountains (Mountains! though still not as big as what I'd get in Colorado), nearly as pretty women (from what I've seen, though NZ isn't particularly famous for the people, so to speak), rain forests, etc. In all fairness, I can't tell the difference from a Kiwi accent to an Aussie one. Don't know if you've read my responses in other threads about Aussies (I have a thing for them), but suffice to say, it's sad I can't tell the difference between your two accents. I've only met a handful of Kiwi's in my time, to my shame. I suppose the difference is relatively akin to the American accent vs Canadian accent (depending on where you are, it's easy to distinguish them (rural Ontario, the Prairie Provinces) or hard even for people who know what to listen for (Anyone from BC really). And I'm flattered by the things trying to kill me. It makes me feel special and gooey that I matter so much! On that matter, the only things Aussies have that are scary are Saltwater Crocks and Irukandji. Aus or NZ, I'd be leaving behind real killers (mountain lions, polar bears, grizzly bears, bison, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, my fellow humans, etc.) On that note, how is the cost-of-living? Education works out for me, but I've always focused more on the Aussie end of the picture. Doesn't help that most things I read comparing your two countries make NZ look like Australia's version of Canada.

Honestly, it's expensive here. Cost of living varies from place to place, and Auckland will rob you blind when it comes to renting. It's cheaper in the smaller towns, and although I live in one of the wealthier regions (due to farmlands making up a lot of the area) living costs where I am aren't so bad. It's also a really good area for hiking and tramping, if that's the sort of thing that you're into since you mentioned mountains. You can do a week tramp along the Taraua Ranges (highly recommend) or a short 2 hour walk to the Putangirua Pinnacles (the pillar formations are pretty cool). The coast is really good, too. Or you can go a little more up North and ski/snowboard on a volcano. It doesn't erupt much. Or go way down south and take a hike up a glacier. There is lots of variety in our geography, as you said. I think NZ and Aus accents are equally as bad as the other. Well, they are to me. Not like I really know what I sound like. But they are similar, I'm sure. I don't know about attractiveness, or how other countries view us kiwis in terms of approachability etc. I am sure we're just like every other country.

I don't know about attractiveness, or how other countries view us kiwis in terms of approachability etc. I am sure we're just like every other country. All the parts of the US I like are skyrocketing in prices unfortunately. I'm up in the air over whether I'd want it to be a permanent move or just for a few years. If it's temporary, I could probably do some of the more lively (and expensive) areas, though I'm also drawn to quaint areas too. I like/prefer cities, but I'd sacrifice that for proximity to nice physical geography (wine country for example.) I'm absolutely all about hiking and climbing, and especially mountains, and that's one reason I want to go to New Zealand so much. I learned to love it going up and down the desert mountains in the Sonoran Desert in Arizona behind my Grandparents place, and learned to love it training and rucking in Alaska, Washington, and Afghanistan. I'm going to Iceland (the Northern version of you guys, and actually another place I'd move to) in December to climb on an active volcano and climb an ice waterfall, so I'm definitely up for the hardcore stuff there! I'll even call it training for NZ I think the Aussie general accent is the most attractive accent in the world. The NZ accent, from what I can tell, sounds like an odd variation of the general accent and broad accent. Regardless, lets put it this way: I like Antipodean accents! See, I'm honestly thinking I have some kind of synesthesia or similar function of the brain that lets me interpret accents as something that's favorable to me. And it's the same for nationalities and countries. I'm inherently drawn to certain women of certain nationalities compared to others. Then again, that's just my inherent sense of nationalism talking; I have this bizarre habit of anthropomorphizing countries in my tastes.

I wouldn't really recommend living in Melbourne. Historically it's been a very good place to live. But the housing prices, combined with the increasing population, as well as the rise of hipster culture means that our fair city is going downhill.
By population boom, I refer to problems with transport and infrastructure. I live and work in a suburban area 30kms from the CBD, but it still takes me 40 minutes to travel 6-7km to and from work on a bad day. Add to that the uptick of racially based crime (not hate crimes but gang affiliation based on race) and an inability of our law enforcement/justice system to acknowledge the problem, let alone solve it.
I love to shitpost about the sheep fuckers on the other side of the Tasman, but I'll not lie. I have entertained the notion of moving to NZ, more than once.
On the whole, it's still the first world and a very good place to live. But I have nothing but positivity from my experiences in NZ and wouldn't mind the idea of moving there one bit.

As long as you don't move to Auckland you'd do fine. Auckland house prices are insane and the wages are nowhere near high enough to cope. Auckland is the fourth most expensive city in the world in which to buy a house apparently.

I will refrain from stating a specific location, but it is a medium-large sized city, largely diverse in some categories, festive at certain times throughout the year, corruption thrives throughout the streets, the weather is usually unexpected and or random. Its evening and night time are more appealing. Neon lights and street lights glow and light up the streets. The streets can be dangerous, though. I know of a lounge here that many of you all would enjoy. If I felt comfortable stating my city on the Internet, I would be happy to share.

Finland. I knew there were many Finns here, and on the old BSN - but had no idea some of you guys listed here were my fellow countrymen/women.
Fun fact: that St. Louis Gateway Arch was designed by a Finnish-American architect, Eero Saarinen.
