what's with the facination of magic? rogues all the way, sure mages are OP. but screw OP, sneaking and stubbing bitches! This is simple for me: we are in Southern Thedas: mages are oppressed. In Tevinter I will play as non-mage character. Probably as warrior. (True, the big firepower and aoe still tempting, especially, if we get back the blood magic. ) Meh, I play as mages not because their oppressed (actually playing as mages have taught me that I should be jackshite careful using it; I hope we get the chance to get possesssed in the next game, or even bond with a spirt and became sort of like Cole or Anders, or take a deal with a demon, and such).

With DAO, I leaned heavily Rogue, with the occasional Warrior and only a single Mage, to finally try the infamous game-breaking build for myself.
In DA2, I hated the Warrior and DW Rogue. I played almost exclusively as a Mage. I occasionally sprinkled an Archer Rogue into the mix, mostly to visit with Bethany. I definitely preferred Mage-Hawke, though, mechanically and narratively.
With DAI, I arrived predisposed toward Mage gameplay, and favored that class heavily, at first. (The KE "nerf" was much needed. It made the spec much more enjoyable by removing the auto-win button.) I have recently enjoyed an Archer Assassin and a Two-handed Champion quite a bit.
The Warrior, in particular, surprised me. I don't particularly like DA's combat, to put it mildly. It think it mostly sucks, but the setting is so damn good that I keep playing. At times with the Warrior, I actually felt like I was playing a better game, in terms of combat. It has some great combat tricks. I particularly enjoyed the Grappling Chain, the Combat Roll (for positioning) and Charging Bull skills. Its a lot of fun to jerk your enemies all over the field with those chains, and to run right over opponents and obstacles with the Charging Bull skill. The optimizer in me whispered that I should ditch one or the other at higher levels, but I never did, because they were too damn fun.
The Mage has its broad bag of tricks, the Rogue can kill anything in mere seconds, and the Warrior is absolutely unstoppable. You can differentiate even more within those general descriptions, but the main thing is that each class has a role to play and the three are well balanced, at present. I actually enjoy all three reasonably well, in DAI. I thought it was clever that they even found a non-combat trick for each class, introducing veilfire and breakable walls for Mages and Warriors, respectively, to balance lock-picking.

My guess, is that: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/LinearWarriorsQuadraticWizards. Ergo, it would probably lead to this kind of mentality in certain individuals: Concerning this thread, the answer is a mage. but what about sneaking? and bows, and stuby stub? rogue is clearly the most fun to play... i mean that's why assassin creed is fun, because you sneak around and hidden blade teh shit out of people! (well that's and jumping on roof tops like spiderman ) Until Unity, sneaking was hit and miss. (I guess you could say until Black Flag, but pre-Unity stealth sucked.) You get a bit of Warrior and Rogue in AC. Someday, someone is going to make an RPG with polished action gameplay that isn't Mass Effect, and is set in a more "medieval" time. If and when this happens, I'll likely never be able to really put down the controller, between ME and this theoretical series. All this talk makes me want to play AC Unity, again. Despite all the internet hate parroting, that game plays like ballet. They perfected free-running, and character movement in general, with Unity. Then, because people were understandably pissed about the epically bad launch of their unfinished game, they threw out all of Unity's successes and gave us Syndicate-- a game that fixed Unity's weak points but failed at nearly everything in which Unity was brilliant. Sigh. Oh, well. On-topic, I need to finish my DAI 2-handed Champion, but I'm lacking motivation. I believe I'm "DA'd out", for now.

Warrior.
I am the tank, and I will protect my squishy friends.
(I seem to always wind up TRYING to tank in vidja games, no matter what class I am, so I may as well embrace it. I do play others on occasion, but sword and shield warrior is usually my first and greatest love.)

Thats usually my mindset when I'm not playing a Mage (looks at canon, sees one warrior; and she's a sword and shield tanker). Being a tank is epic when your bored of playing a Mage...

I loved Unity's gameplay. It did have some equipment that were like "win buttons", such as smoke bombs and medicine, but there has never been an AC game that was actually challenging, since AC. You're in "God Mode" 100% of the time. Unity's god mode starts as soon as you get decent gear or learn to play. I agree that none of the games have had the depth the early games had. That's a writing and development issue more than anything. I'd like to see it remedied, but I'll not hold my breath. If they keep bringing games at least as good as Black Flag and Unity (and Rogue would've been with a full budget and treatment), I'll likely keep enjoying them. Syndicate was stripped of its soul -- free-running; and it suffered for it. Oh, well. Enough AC talk in a DA forum. It's dangerous, anyway, to express too much positivity about Unity online. The hate runs strong and deep. I need to "Press OPTIONS Button" and load my game. I love the DAI theme, but it's on its fifth loop.

On this subject it is kind of funny. I usually play as Bow Rogues. Though a fair few mages here and there. But in Inquisition I planned out four INquisitors. But have only ever played two of them, even mutiple times, because every time I jumped into Cassandra or Blackwall I'd almost die out of boredom and I fear playing as a warrior in DA I, which two of my Inquisitors are, would be terably boring. Bow rogues in DA I were fairly awesome and flexible though.

Bow rogues in DA I were fairly awesome and flexible though. I wanted to share my take on the Warrior, since I had much the same feeling about it for the better part of two years. Warriors start a little bland, but get interesting once you have a few skills. I guess the same could be said for any class, but it feels magnified for Warriors. They really are versatile, though, once you get those first few skills. They can destructively Bull Charge into (and through) targets and terrain to get into the thick of things (or out, or wherever...). They can yank a target adjacent with Grappling Chain. The evolutions of that power have you either kicking the target to the ground upon arrival or yanking a whole crowd adjacent. Both can be great. They can tumble around defensively, shedding status effects as they go, with Combat Roll. Alternately, you can turn that roll into a brokenly powerful weapon with one of the evolutions. The above are just two skills from one tree. I haven't even touched upon the differences between Two-handed or Weapon-and-Shield, nor upon the Specializations. Warriors have an immediate, often awesome answer for every combat situation; and that answer doesn't involve autoattacks or "I hit it with my weapon" anymore than any other class, once past the Prologue. As a player who mostly plays Mages, with the occasional Archer Rogue sprinkled in, my first DAI Warrior was an eye-opener. Being able to charge into battle first (often literally with Charging Bull), rather than watch from the back ranks, was a blast. It felt totally liberating. I felt practically indestructible as a Warrior, also, compared to my usual Mages and Rogues. My Warrior even seemed to climb and jump substantially better, to the point that I began to suspect that these might be tied to Strength score. (It is entirely possible that I just excelled at DAI's terrible "platformer gameplay" during that particular playthrough.) I played a Two-handed Champion as my first warrior, and definitely plan to go back and play as a Weapon-and-Shield Warrior after giving DAI a break. I think I'm burning out, a bit.

I usually go with rogues or mages.
Thematically, I prefer a mage Hawke and a melee Inquisitor/Warden, but it doesn't always work out that way. One of my favorite playthroughs was as a qunari mage.

Back in Baldur's Gate my first pc was a "sword and shield" warrior, and that's still the class I use the most in DA (at least during the first playthrough). Partly because it feels nostalgic, but also because I just feel like it that's the kind of character I want to be: in the front line, protectig my comrades and charging into enemy lines fearlessly.

Warrior in DA:O, Rogue in DA2 and Mage in DA:I. For me this choice is mostly tied to plot, canon character and romance. In DA:I it is also slightly forced by the fact that the controls for close ranged characters on PC are... well I'm not even sure I'd call them controls, because they don't control anything. Or nearly enough. But Mage in DA:I is great

Rogue archer. That's what my "canon" Warden was and my "canon" Hawke was as well. My first Inquisitor was an archer, as is my current character. <glances towards her avatar> I'm sure you guys are so surprised by this. I enjoyed playing a mage in DA2 and DA:I. The only class combo I won't play is 2H warrior. Too slow for my taste.

Warriors seem to be lagging behind in popularity. I sure hope that if there ever is another DA game that the person designing abilities makes them a lot more fun
