Xenoblade Chronicles X is crazy underrated. Game only roughly sold 200k copies but that's due in part with it being a Wii U release only. Exploration in fun, the world is HUGE and the battle system gratifying! Hell, it takes 25 to 30 hours alone just to get your skell (Mech)! There's all types of personal flare that can be created with talents and skills. And lets not forget about the BAMS (Big Ass Monsters)!

Kingdoms of Amalur (story was a bit confusing but the combat was great and u were giving a lot of freedoms to customise ur character)
Shadow of the colossus (I always feel so immersed despite it being effectively an empty world for the most part).
Unreal Tournament 3 (good graphics and great gameplay, sadly nobody played it on console)
The Fear series (great FPS horror games)
Summoner 1 & 2 - good games with a lot of hours to spend.
Lost Odyssey - the last real Final Fantasy

It is for sure one of my favourite videogames ever! It is a masterpiece, from the soundtrack, to it fairy tale-like story, its awesome! I remember playing it, and I agree with you, it's the last real Final Fantasy. Its soundtrack is one of the most underrated ones. Battle theme was so epic .

Yup. Lost Odyssey was amazing! Beautiful soundtrack indeed. Top 5 battle music. It was the most mature JRPG I ever played. I enjoyed it immensely at a time where I was already tired of JRPGs. Still sort of heart broken that it did so poorly and no sequel was made. I met the great Uematsu in person once btw. In Cologne before a Final Fantasy tribute concert. A friend of a friend was doing an interview and I got to tag along. He signed my FF8 soundtrack. And he agreed to a group photo too. Extremely easygoing person. Before the actual concert he shook hands with hundreds of fans. He wore the bandana we gifted him during the concert. Great guy! Another underrated game from the Xbox 360 era: Enslaved. Great voice acting and impressive motion capture at the time. Sweet quiet love story. Trip was a great female heroine. Loved her character design. Combat was simplistic but fun. Would have liked a sequel. No trailer right now because I'm on the phone...

Tyranny by Obsidian is another overlooked gem. It was and still is refreshing to play the villain. Tyranny is an isometric rpg like back in the old days. There are multiple ways to play the game. Do you assist Kyros' armies? Do you serve only Kyros and betray your other allies? Do you break your oath and side with the rebels (good guys?) Or do you want to overthrow Kyros and bring your own brand of law to the realm?

I could name, off the top of my head, Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines, for example. It has many flaws but I think it's a great RPG.
Agreed! It's a buggy piece of crap, to be sure, but it's also one of the best RPGs I have ever played. My other underrated favourite is The Secret World. I don't like the combat quite as much in the relaunched Secret World Legends but the story is still one of my favourites in any video game, let alone an MMORPG. It was nice to have an excuse to play the whole thing through twice even if it meant having to grind my gear up all over again. I also think that the Tex Murphy series deserves broader recognition than it gets - it's well-regarded in dedicated adventure gaming circles but compared to LucasArts or Sierra stuff relatively few people seem to be aware of its existence. I've given TSW a try three times - twice in the original version and once with Legends - and never managed to finish it (though I haven't yet officially given up on my most recent Legends playthrough, it's just on "hiatus"). While I eventually made my peace with its MMO elements and the lack of personality for my character, the other thing that was still bugging me was the obscurity of some of the puzzles. More than once, I had to look up a solution online and thought to myself, "What? How the hell did anybody ever figure this out?!" In fact, when I last left off, it was partly because I couldn't progress in the Egypt level without pulling off this near-impossible sequence of jumps between a bunch of pillars, nor did I have anywhere near enough in-game currency to go buy a hoverboard.

I totally agree with you! SOMA is a rather especial game, and very intense, if I must say. It is one of the few video games in which, when you did questionable, or awful thing, you could really feel it, you completely knew it was wrong (at least for me) . It is true that the game was not scary per se, but I think the true horror component of it was the philosophical questions it arose. It has compelling narrative and it leaves you wondering, questioning morality and humanity the same way Simon does. I loved the setting as well, it has a beautifully decadent atmosphere to it.
NOLF was a shooter, if I recall correctly? Absolutely, especially the bold part . Besides that really well-executed existential horror scenario, the genius of this game for me was how they managed to make one think about the very fundamentals of what it means to be alive, conscious , to have morals and a purpose - e.g. what does it mean to be human ? And they pull this off without grandstanding, judgement or lengthy exposition of any kind. I think I need to play it again sometime soon .
As for NOLF, yes it is basically a sneaker/shooter kind of game with a cool and exceedingly self-ironic James Bond-type storyline. The gameplay and setting is very satisfying and the story is both interesting and hilariously funny. I actually once pointed someone to SOMA to explain why I don't buy into the whole "let's upload our brains and be digitally immortal" concept - because, as Simon discovers, it wouldn't be a transfer but rather a copy-and-paste. There might be a copy of you living in the digital cloud somewhere, but you yourself would still be in the physical world.
(It also probably isn't literally "immortality" but rather vastly increased longevity, since you would need an infinite energy supply for a digital life to be immortal.)

I stopped playing Secret World Legends because of the lack of space in the inventory, what made me unable to upgrade my equipment, but otherwise it's really a great underrated game. ------------------
I love the fast paced hack and slash genre, and it baffles me that it's only a small niche. Platinum Games should be a reference in the whole world, not getting finantial problems before Nier Automata.

I loved SOMA, and I think it's much better than Amnesia The Dark Descent... What about Enslaved: Odyssey To The West? That game with Andy Serkis? Controls take a bit getting used to but it's a really quite interesting game with a cool storyline. EDIT: overlooked it the first time around: Another underrated game from the Xbox 360 era: Enslaved. Two games always immediately spring to mind for me whenever I think of underappreciated games, both from PS2: Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. This was a platformer/puzzle game and I loved it to bits. You flipped back and forth on levels between two protagonists - one a Sphinx warrior doing all of the battling and most of the platforming/item collecting, and a young pharaoh betrayed and mummified who does most of the puzzle-solving and some platforming to help the game progress. As someone who LOVES platformers and puzzles, I enjoyed this game every bit as much as more beloved games like Spyro the Dragon and Jak & Daxter. This one was a solid flop as far as popularity, though. I also really dug the Ancient Egyptian mythological theme - something you don't really see in a lot of games. I would buy a PS4 remaster in a heartbeat, but that will never happen. Drakan: The Ancients' Gates. This was my first proper introduction to action RPGs, in a similar vein to Elder Scrolls or Dragon Age. You played a set character, Rynn, who was a red-headed kick-ass chick. But you had an inventory system and could play with different weapon types. The story was a decent one to see unfold, the combat was lots of fun, and the best part? YOU COULD RIDE A FREAKING DRAGON. Seriously. You're bonded to Arokh, who keeps an eye out for you from above and warns you of approaching dangers. And you can summon him to mount and then fly to distance places and engage in combat - set fire to enemies below or grapple with enemy dragons above. And the flying controls were not horrible. It was genuinely FUN to fly around and see the world from Arokh's eyes and dogfight with other dragons. And you could evolve and play around with different breath types for Arokh, so not just your standard dragonfire but also ice, lightning, etc. And this is a game I literally NEVER see anyone talk about existing. Ever. Not only would I buy a PS4 remaster of this in a heartbeat, I would seriously put money into a Kickstarter for it.

A game I really feel it is underrated is Xenogears: - It had one of the deepest stories I've ever seen in a game, deep in psychology, philosophy and religion, not being really hard to understand - It had a great combat system, where you can create your own combos - Great villains, cutscenes and characters - Amazing soundtrack - Good amount of plot twists
I'll leave the opening here, watch it, I knew I was going to love it as soon as I watched it

When I think of old games that I don't see people on this forum talk about I think of Legend of Dragoon. I played it all the way through maybe 3 years ago at age 27. Really enjoyed it, and got invested enough to feel really sad about the outcome of Rose.

Metro Last Light. amazing atmosphere, good story with interesting designs and more. it is too good for Deep Silver to be it's publisher to be honest. Prey 2017. Survival horror mystery in space with twists. the development studio is working on a multiplayer next though and Bethesda is doing their best EA impression. SOMA one of the best endings in video games. its an emotional rollercoaster in a matter of minutes. Darksiders 3 because of how harsh critics were. the series has always been about imitating relevant gameplay mechanics. while i think Darksiders 2 is the best of the series and Darksiders 1's ending is the hypest, Fury is the most sympathetic horsemen and this game has a better pacing by far. There are some other names that i recall as well but their publishers don't care enough so why should i

SOMA one of the best endings in video games. its an emotional rollercoaster in a matter of minutes. This. I totally agree with you! Personally, I felt Katherine's plan with the ARK was only delaying the inevitable; a digital dead end that accepted humanity's extinction by ignoring it and living in digital bliss until the hard drive crashed or the solar panels cracked. If anything, the ARK should have been a backup, backup, backup plan, and certainly not one given that level of priority compared to other projects. The tragedy of the narrative (I feel) is how the survivors had more than enough opportunity to continue our species, but they fell into despair and, more or less, gave up. Despite the horror elements surrounding it I thought the WAU was the real hero of the game. It was trying, and in several key ways, was actually succeeding in resurrecting the human species. What it would ultimately create might not be "human" in the traditional sense, but at least some aspect of us could survive, and eventually repopulate the planet. Needless to say, I would spare it in my playthroughs.

For me it was old JRPG games like Wild Arms, Legend of Lagoon, Legend of Legaia, Saga Frontier, Legend of Mana and even further down the list into old SNES games, Illusion of Gaia, Terranigma and the first 2 Lufia games. Older games may not have the big showy graphics of today, but they had heart and a story that would bring tears to my eyes.

I just wanted to give this thead a quick bump. Because one of my favorite games nobody's ever heard of, got a massive update. store.steampowered.com/app/264240/The game is a bit dated, with some older movie/celebrity references. But the game itself is superb. You can beat it once, in 4 hours. But you can get soooo many different endings to it. I think there are 30 ish endings. I only got like 12 or so. Seriously, my first time playing through it, I was not subtle. And I was dying of laughter, while talking to the med bay. Just...the voice acting, the situation, the character reactions. They were all on point. So well done, it was great. I can highly recommend this game, to anyone looking for a game that is deep. And I do mean Deep.

Like someone else said : The Secret World.
I discovered it recently, and I'm pretty amazed. It's a MMO like game, and it has a couple of issues related to that. But it's a mix of urban fantasy/ horror/mythology/secret societies with really cool stuff...the first big zone is like a huge hommage to Stephen King and Neil Gaiman.
