Ah shit...I hated Firefly...
Meh, open world is rapidly becoming an overrated fotm. Something for developers to use to brag about how huge their game world is, conveniently not mentioning how EMPTY those huge worlds are. AS long as there's enough room to contain a good story, it's fine.

Just watched the longer impression videos out there. Def looks like it's gonna be a fun AA style game. I like how the dialogue is actually fully written out, though It will feel odd going back to a mute protag but that's fine. As for the open world aspect I really really hope it's more of a linear/semi open world. I'm so burned out of everything being a giant open world.
The perks and flaws system seems like it will be interesting. Being able to take negative effects to gain some more perks and such seems cool.

And it's mainly due to the poor world building they did in conjunction with characters like River and Jayne.

I'm another person waiting to see if there's a third-person camera option. (If not, this is another game I won't be buying due to motion sickness. Which sucks, because it looks cool.)

Visually looks like Fallout New Vegas plus a lot of humor inside (maybe this depends on using the dumb questions). So anyone knows if the camera is only first person or it can also be changed as Fallout? ps: that was a not so subtle burn at Bethesda on the trailer.
It looks really interesting.

It's first person only, stated in the PC gamer article. Here's the thing with camera. Your game has to be built for third person right from the start, if it's not you can't just inject it. There're things like texture fade in/out, positioning, and overall it's more complicated than it looks. Third person to first person is easier to achieve, the other way around? it needs to be built for that specifically.

Ah shit...I hated Firefly... I also am hearing rumblings on it being less open-world as well, though how open-ended it is will be interesting to see. I think people bring up Firefly because of the Western in space look far away from Earth, but Firefly wasn't trying to be the late 1800s in space like The Outer Worlds is, nor did it had a focus on corporation controlling everything from what I remember.

Gameplay information:
Relationships with companions, but no romances
Companions will have special attacks, and may interject themselves into conversations.
Hacking and lockpicking, yes. But only based on skill level, no minigames
We'll have a ship to travel around various planets in the solar system
Character will have "perks" and "flaws". You may have the option to develop a flaw based on stuff that happens to you in exchange for picking up an extra perk.
"Dumb" dialogue options are a thing.

"You were part of a ship that got lost," Boyarsky says. "You've been frozen for 70 years. If you're frozen for more than 10 years, it's a really bad thing. This guy figured out a way to save you, and he needs you to help him get more chemicals to help save the rest of the colonists. But you don't have to help him do that. You can go to the 'evil board,' the Halcyon corporate board, and turn this guy in and see what happens if you do that."
"You get a lot of money," Cain adds.Already sounds better than MEA

Yeah, the PC gamer article did a pretty good TL;DR of the Gameinformer gameplay. Microsoft surely will want to show more gameplay on E3, specially taking into account Sony wont show up next year. That further makes me believe release is gonna be after E3. The fact that they showed gameplay one day after the reveal shows the game is close to be completed I think.

The Outer Worlds is about "robber barons" controlling a frontier colony they paid for. Firefly was about what happens if corporations gain too much power, and they were the next Government. The Alliance was a corporate supergovernment with the Blue Suns having a scary amount of control. With The Outer Worlds "at least it was until the corporations bought it, branded it, and started selling it ludicrously inflated prices". So similar theme there I guess.

However Joss Whedon made Firefly in 2002, long before including themes of corporatocracy became the cool thing to do.

I didn't know there are people who don't like Firefly! *g*
I've wanted a Mass Effect standalone game Firefly style ever since I watched that show. Or a Farscape-esque group of aliens.
Looks like all the fun to be had as space pirates will be done by a different developer.
Bioware could have easily made a series of not too serious games in the Milky Way following the stories of all sorts of adventurers and criminals. Instead we got goofy in a bad way with Andromeda. *sigh*
The Outer Worlds will have to heal my disappointment with both Bioware and Bethesda.
My body is ready!

Heh, I actually contemplated the idea of a ME game more on the lines of "mercenary stuff" and less serious so to speak. But I don't know if Bioware would do it, they're super into the idea of the PC being a hero all the time, which I like don't get me wrong, but I'd like something more criminal too.

On some level, almost every planet/moon in Firefly were essentially controlled by robber barons.
In the pilot episode, Patience had become "pretty much" Mayor of Whitefall after taking over most of the moon, in "Jaynestown", the Higgin's family that own Higgin's moon are shown to have built their wealth on (effectively) slave labour, Burgess seems to pretty much run the town in "Heart of Gold", the wealthy elite of Persephone in "Shindig" aren't above dealing in illegal cargo, etc.

Who needs Bethesda and Bioware when there is Obsidian and CD Projekt! And Ubisoft seems to throw it's hat into the ring with AC Odyssey and the hiring of Mike Laidlaw. It's so good there are companies that pick up on Bioware's slack. Honorable mention to Spiders and their upcoming game Greedfall. The RPG genre needs to live on!

Did Firefly have "quest givers" reminding the crew to buy "Spacer's Choices" on job turn in?
