Dragon Age 4 is on the way, and I'm trying to finally get into the Dragon Age series, having already made some progress in Dragon Age Origins (though I may need to restart with a different class because I'm not really happy with playing the Warrior). I was wondering if there were any special story related DLC or Expansions in both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2 that important for the events in Dragon Age Inquisition and fills in certain holes in the overall narrative. I already know that I would need to get the Awakening expansion for Dragon Age Origins, and I believe there is a DLC for Dragon Age 2 that introduces Corypheus, the villain of Dragon Age Inquisition. But what else would you recommend I strive to get?

If you go by DAI lore, you should get witch hunt, it gives a bit more insight in the eluvians. For sheer fun, Mark of the Assassin, plus you get another unusual Qunari perspective, apart from Iron Bull. I would also recommend Wardens Keep, which shows a bit darker side to the wardens, maybe helps understand, why they acted like they did in DAI. And Stone Prisoner, because while golems aren't a focus of DAI, I'm pretty sure, that topic isn't done in the DA universe.

I agree with witch hunt and the stone prisoner and would like to add DAO awakening it has a lot of well lets say loose ends that would get tied up in DA4.

Welcome aboard! The only ones I'd say are necessary are DA2's Legacy and DAI's Trespasser. But honestly there are so many nice character moments, bits of lore, etc. in the DLCs that I'd try to get them all if you can find package deals for each of the games.

DAO: Awakening and Witch Hunt, possibly Warden's Keep. I do enjoy all DLC though
DA2: Legacy
DAI: The Descent and Trespasser.

If you go by DAI lore, you should get witch hunt, it gives a bit more insight in the eluvians. While this is true, I think the decision to play it is more based on roleplay. I recently redid my canon and had my Warden die. I played DAA with the Orlesian Warden and saw no reason to play Witch Hunt as he has no reason to be running after Morrigan. I skipped that DLC entirely and went straight to DA2 after playing DAA.

DAO: Awakening, Witch Hunt, as the others said, and I love The Stone Prisoner – for Shale. Shale is a great companion (in every view).
DA2, I love all DLCs, but the Legacy must have, The Black Emporium is a place with some stuff (weapons and armours) and an opportunity to change your Hawke's look in game (for example age him/her or change the hair style) + a mabari dog, who is summonable (can help in the battles) and the companions have fun conversations to them when visit the Hawke's house. The Mark of the Assassin is a fun "family vacation" adventure, with a new companion, only for this adventure. Not really need for the story, but I enjoy. The Exiled Prince is an addition to the Chantry-line and a new companion.
DAI: Trespasser is must have, but the Descent's and the Jaw of Hakkon's story also very interesting, and probably important for the future.

Yeah if you can I'd say get all the DLC as quite often the DLC quests can be more fun than some of the main ones it's one of the things that Bioware has always done well in my opinion. But otherwise igf you have to pick and choose the ones listed here in this thread are probably the most important ones to get.

I may be in the minority with this, but I'd recommend The Golems of Amgarrak for Origins - I found it really fun and it does foreshadow something in DA2 a little bit.
All the story DLCs for DA2 really enhance the game in my opinion. I like to play Mark of the Assassin and Legacy in Act 3, as it's a bit short otherwise.
All the Inquisition DLCs are likewise good. Trespasser is needed because it's basically the real ending of the game, Descent has some pretty interesting stuff and characters and Jaws of Hakkon basically provides more adventure in a pretty cool new area.

I'm sorry I can't stop myself I never understood her response here. She's jealous of the Warden for some reason I don't get, and it is wildly inappropriate considering what's happening up at the castle.

I would say that the two most important DLC are DA2 Legacy and DAI Trespasser. I also suggest playing DAO: Awakening as well, though that is an expansion. DAA ties into Corypheus because of the Architect. Legacy ties into Corypheus because, er, of Corypheus. Trespasser is the epilogue of DAI that clearly leads into the next game. IF you play a Warden that has involvement with Morrigan, I also recommend Witch Hunt as well, but this varies for player experience -- mine does not, so I skip it -- whereas I don't think the others do.
To be honest, Trespasser doesn't even feel optional. Not playing it would be like throwing away a book with the last chapter unread. If I remove Trespasser as an option, I would say that the single most important DLC is DA2 Legacy because of how it introduces Corypheus. Plus, Legacy is also just a great DLC, so I recommend it on those grounds as well.
All of the other DLC are based on personal interest and I'd suggest aren't as pivotal.

In all seriousness, I've never understood it, either. I can see her being suspicious in light of everything that's going on, so perhaps a different tone by the VA would have carried that across better. I recently played it as male, but unfortunately don't remember if it sounds as bad.

All of the other DLC are based on personal interest and I'd suggest aren't as pivotal. The OP is asking about getting Educated in Prep for DA4 though. Unless they just HATE the gameplay they can't even force themselves to finish the base game, for the purpose of education, they need to do several DLCs which may not make Roleplay sense. On my First PT I did Witch Hunt because Morrigan was my friend and saved I and my lover's life and I wanted to know how she was and what she was up to with the outcome of that last decision we made together

I just bought all DLC for 12.49USD
It is on sale at 40% off (17.99), and they have a coupon on the top of the Origin banner, SAVE30, which brings it to that price.
I know it has been cheaper, but this was good enough for me. I have wanted a reason to replay this game; now I have it.

hmm... all of them? i mean i'm running them in my head and i can't think of anyone i didn't enjoy. let's see: origins:- warden keep - yup great story, more info on the wardens.
- stone prisoner - first the mission with kitty, than shale is generally awesome, also anvil of the void with shale in the party.
- return to ostagar - nice mission, more weapons, funny banter between alistair and wynne. or if you bring loghain, more of his awesomeness (yes i like loghain, sue me!)
- awakening - well, it's like 30 hours of gameplay, i would not want to miss it...
- golems of amgarrak - thrilling story
- witch hunt - more elven lore and generally a good story
dragon age 2:- the exiled prince - okay, this one have nice companion mission on the 2nd act, but i don't like sebastian, so this is the only one i would say is skipable, if not for the fact we get leliana cameo, so yeah... even sebastian is worth enduring for leliana =D
- legacy - relations to dragon age inquisition aside, it's a good story, with more warden stuff
- mark of the assassin - it's just really fun
inquisition:- jaws of hakkon - the combat can be annoying, as the enemies are tougher but not in a balanced way. however, the semi-open world environment that bioware tried in inquisition actually works there. plus the story is great and we learn more about the history of the first inquisition, how exciting! =D
- the descent - good story, more hidden secret about the ancient dwarves that even they forgot. what's not to like?
- trespasser - i mean, aside from the good story (and emotional if you romanced a certain companion) it might be related to the next game so...
so yeah, just play all of them, problem solved.
