The timing of this is kind of interesting. Similarly Doctor Who socials put out fan art of Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson AKA the Doctor and Ruby before they could release trailers for their episodes (the David Tennant + Catherine Tate return trilogy was to air first), so it's a nice and fun thing to do before the marketing push of the new stuff, promoting fan work and engaging with the community - they've been going it on Twitter a while of course but actually re-opening the tumblr and posting the fan art there? Definitely feels like it's potentially a pre-cursor to the gameplay stuff in the coming (hopefully 3, like June!) months More or less my thoughts on the matter. The thing about this though to, and I think your point supports this even, BioWare doesen't even have to start marketing Dread Wolf at this stage but just things on Dragon Age in general. Start ramping up stuff on tumbler about the fandom in general in order to start generating buzz/ interest among fans and with luck the chatter will leak out beyond and other people may want to take an interest in things to. This can be, as you said, fan art, concept art from previous games, discussions, polls, sharing pictures of companions, cosplay, anything like that. And then if we are very lucky they could start doing concept art for Dreadwolf like they were doing when Christian Daley was running things...briefly. And well the timing of this what strikes me has been my pet musings on things like obviously there is still a lot of vagueness in when they could market the game and what not and nothing has been confirmed so disclaimer disclaimer grain of salt...but if we are right about June being the time they will do the global reveal and then you have the next earning call in May then April would be a perfect time to start building the hype and greasing the wheels in ways that I mentioned above. Start reminding the general casual fan that Dragon Age exists, hopefully attract new eyeballs to your brand, have something in May which could tease a direction and then cap it off with a running start with the global reveal in June. Its my hope anyways and I think there is a lot of logic behind it with the above assumptions.

There seems to be an uptick in the energy levels with some forum members (ie: Tumbler Bio account moved there?). The Hype train is weeks before it arrives but still I've briefly contemplated:
A-1 Why did Bio described DA4 companions as a "fellowship"? From the dictionary definitions, these companions have similar interests and of equal stature. Somehow, though, a Warden is an awkward fit.
B-1 Remember this phrase from Gamescon 2020 "what happens when you don't have power." This is a description of our hero. A common theme with RPGs (ie: The poor farmer becomes a power house).
C-1 And Varric's "a new hero. No magic hand, no ancient prophecy. The kind of person they'll never see coming." What binds them together? Is this another Fellowship of the Ring? It leans that way to me.
Does anyone disagree that this companion framework requires no loyalty quests? While a fellowship strongly suggests common interests, there is no denying there exists uncommon ones between them. So, where's the glue? How strong is it? Is leadership talent the binding agent? From a writer's perspective (I'm no writer) it gives them lots of maneuvering room to add subplots, twists, death and companion(s) leaving. The latter, however, dilutes the necessary focus on the main story arc. I think it becomes a distraction for our hero.
With all said and done, the first "dev" drip has arrived.

I gotchu -- it's from the BioWare blog post for Dragon Age Day 2023 [ link] "With that will come our full reveal including new trailers, gameplay, and—of course—the long-awaited release date. The Dread Wolf will rise once more and we’ll have much more to share with you as we approach Summer 2024. Please keep an eye on our social channels for all the latest information on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s reveal and beyond."This is essentially what I was expecting to see, as well. It's one of the reasons I am keen for the May 7th meeting and that I think after that meeting we'll see a big uptick of social media activity. And I do think they're going to dovetail with the June 7th Summer Games Fest. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong, but this is the expectation that was set for me, personally.

B-1 Remember this phrase from Gamescon 2020 "what happens when you don't have power." This is a description of our hero. A common theme with RPGs (ie: The poor farmer becomes a power house). I don't think Patrick was referring to martial or magical prowess, rather to leadership power and influence. Which is why this statement was always interesting to me but I think Patrick phrased it like that because it was easiest to get across in a teaser. Both in DAO and in DA2 you're the underdog doing what those in power will not. In DAO you're just one of two Warden survivors, there is no Warden order post Ostagar in Ferelden and Wardens from other countries aren't able to help, Loghain is more concerned with his hatred of Orlais than the Blight, the Bannorn are fighting Loghain, and Anora is ineffectual. Even if the Wardens have some historical goodwill, you still have to do everyone's dirty laundry everywhere you go before they agree to help. In DA2 the city is full of disenfranchised and displaced refugees, Kirkwall is rampant with anti-refugee sentiment, the viscount is ineffectual in basically everything, especially the Qunari, the templars are yelling at the mages, the mages are yelling at the templars, the Chantry isn't doing anything about it, and somewhere along the way also can't save even your own mother from a murderer supported by Orsino himself. DAI is the only odd one out, and I'd say it's mostly post Haven this becomes obvious with how fast and quickly the Inquisition grows in-world. You start out accused of terrorism, in a prison cell, fighting to prove your innocence, then you get impostor syndrome because you're just "some guy" but you're associated with people more important than you. The Inquisition is sort of painted as the underdog by having this "those in power won't do what they should against the obvious threat" thing, with the Chantry being more concerned with electing a new Divine, Orlais being in a civil war, Tevinter just sitting on the sidelines waiting for the South to tear itself apart, Ferelden... kinda being there, I suppose, but there is a hint of "institutional nepotism", let's call it, with the left and right hands of the Divine, washed up Seeker and Sister they may be, an influential ambassador, almost destitute as her family might be, and a decorated former Knight-Captain, recovering lyrium addict that he might be. What I think (or hope, because obviously I can't read minds) Patrick's statement could have hinted at, and I'm going on this based on what we know of Joplin with its heists and more low profile operations, is that you don't have power and influence like the establishment but you won't have it even by the end, but not in the way it happened in DAI where it was taken from you, but more like "you do what needs to be done, no one will know, no one will thank you, but you still do it."

This sounds familiar, I remember Mary Kirby talking about it - or similar stuff - at the time. Vaguely remember it being about him being a storyteller and wanting to make sense of things (which tracks given his dialogue and annoyance at stuff in DAI) but it was probably a lot deeper and longer than my vague recollections!

Anyone got a link to that article with a Dev taking about why they chose Varric as returning companion in dai? Having trouble finding it with searches. PC Gamer: "Fair enough. What is your criteria for determining which characters do come back? Actually, not simply from the dead, but I mean from game to game. Why would Varric make the cut and not somebody else?" Mark Darrah: "That's a good question. Some of it's based on just what the writers are excited about writing. But also, we look for a certain amount of balance between the character. There's a bunch of things that we're trying to do for balance. You want a certain degree of balance between the classes. You want a certain amount of balance between the genders and then a certain amount of balance between the romance options. If you've had a character in a previous game that was a romance option typically we won't bring them back because they carry a lot of extra baggage with them. You're not going to have a romance option come back and certainly not have them be a romance option again because there's a lot of baggage that comes with that. The player might get angry as well. “But they're in love with my previous character forever and ever and ever. How dare you?” I think there's validity to that. You can start to cross off a few characters because of that. We often don't bring back characters, at least not as followers, if they were previously romance options. You might see them. Alistair comes back because we can do cameos and have them have an influence on the story. But additionally, some characters, Varric's a very good character because one of Varric's primary motivations is he's the guy that's got your back. He's your friend. He's a very good character to have because it's good to have someone in your camp no matter what. That makes him a very attractive character. It makes him an interesting character to have because he offers a nice counterpoint to a lot of other kinds of characters. The other thing that causes us to bring someone back is someone that we're just simply not done with. That the arc is incomplete. Isabella between Origins and Dragon Age 2 is a good example of that. We introduced her, but there's just a lot more to be done with that. That's actually usually how we choose. Often characters move. We don't reuse followers very often. Obviously, we are reusing Varric. We typically promote secondary characters between games. "PC Gamer: "Right, so someone graduates from being a quest-giving NPC to being a companion." Mark Darrah: "Yes."
For Dreadwolf: DAD is very likely the first game which wasn´t got a returning former companion. Well if they won´t reuse Varric for a third time. But lets hope that he doesn´t play that much of a major in DAD. Two games in a row as main rogue companion is more than enough.
But i still believe in promoting of Lace Harding, Calpernia plus Mae(varis)

If (big if) they had a returning companion from a previous game/dlc I suspect one of these would be most likely based on their criteria (ranked in order I'd like to see them).
Snug (pretty pleeeeeaaase) Sigrun Aveline (this one is so unlikely lore wise though lol) Cole Finn Talis Ariani Vivienne Jerrick Velana
I'd have loved to add Nathaniel, but I think you can have him executed in DAA? Sten is in a similar position, although I guess you can pretend he managed to escape Lothering if you left him there.

Talis Tallis would make the most sense. I mean she as an former elven Tevinter slave and now Qunari (still spy at Dreadwolf time?) would fit well in Dreadwolf major story plots. By the way i would rule out Sigrun (must long be dead), Vivienne (she can be Divine so she is highly likely not an option), Cole (with his two different fates well not impossible but whats the point in mashing those in one again to bring him back?) and Jerrik & Snug (what´s the point? ) Yeah and that´s why Sebastian Vael had been created. For a time they play with the idea who will be Justice host. First Velanna, then Nathaniel and finally Anders.

Would have made more sense to hand wave Nathaniel's death and kept him instead of Anders, then we could have had cheerful OG Anders meet up with us in Tevinter (where he obviously went to escape templars and wardens alike). Ah well... Also, how dare you say Snug makes no sense?! #SnugForDivine #SnugIsBestBronto

Also, nice to see Weekes reaffirming we're getting something this summer! Although it also does sound like it will be continued radio silence until then. I guess time to plot new games then - how about estimating number of companions and the division between class, gender, and romance options? Since they already referenced a fellowship I'm going with the Tolkien number of 9. An even split between classes. Of these 4 will be male, 4 female, 1 non-binary and/or trans. The romances will be: 1 straight male 1 bisexual male 2 straight females 1 bisexual female With two possible non-companion romances.

Isn't Velanna in similar situation as well? You can outright kill her instead of recruiting her. Why kill though? You can do worse - ridicule her ears.

If (big if) they had a returning companion from a previous game/dlc I suspect one of these would be most likely based on their criteria (ranked in order I'd like to see them). Snug (pretty pleeeeeaaase) Sigrun Aveline (this one is so unlikely lore wise though lol) Cole Finn Talis Ariani Vivienne Jerrick Velana I'd have loved to add Nathaniel, but I think you can have him executed in DAA? Sten is in a similar position, although I guess you can pretend he managed to escape Lothering if you left him there.
Talis is OK with me. Velana is a maid... useless except as a maid serving drinks in a pub?

I'm going for the Q female to be bisexual.
