The technical implications for DA4, if it commits to next-gen only, are staggering.

The next-gen console with SSD looks promising. However, developing DAI on cross-gen platforms was such a pain in the ass. I hope Bioware does not make the same mistake.

I don't see the next Dragon Age coming out till 2022 at the earliest. By then, the next gen will already be underway. There's also a statement made by Laidlaw regarding how it was a bad idea for them [BioWare] to release Inquisition on last-gen consoles.

I remember Mark Darrah mentioning this as well, regretting that they didn't just bite the bullet on this (as Witcher 3 had). And as you point out, timing-wise the release should be well into the next gen anyway, so it shouldn't be an issue.

Are there any hints as to when this next gen console is supposed to be released? It sounded to me like it was still quite a ways off.

A s DA4 will undoubtedly land as a Next-Gen title... Wired: EXCLUSIVE: WHAT TO EXPECT FROM SONY'S NEXT-GEN PLAYSTATIONwww.wired.com/story/exclusive-sony-next-gen-console/ The CPU is based on the third generation of AMD’s Ryzen line and contains eight cores of the company’s new 7nm Zen 2 microarchitecture. The GPU, a custom variant of Radeon’s Navi family, will support ray tracing, a technique that models the travel of light to simulate complex interactions in 3D environments. While ray tracing is a staple of Hollywood visual effects and is beginning to worm its way into $10,000 high-end processors, no game console has been able to manage it. Yet. Ray tracing’s immediate benefits are largely visual. Because it mimics the way light bounces from object to object in a scene, reflective surfaces and refractions through glass or liquid can be rendered much more accurately, even in real-time, leading to heightened realism. According to Cerny, the applications go beyond graphic implications. “If you wanted to run tests to see if the player can hear certain audio sources or if the enemies can hear the players’ footsteps, ray tracing is useful for that,” he says. “It's all the same thing as taking a ray through the environment.” The AMD chip also includes a custom unit for 3D audio that Cerny thinks will redefine what sound can do in a videogame. “As a gamer,” he says, “it's been a little bit of a frustration that audio did not change too much between PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. With the next console the dream is to show how dramatically different the audio experience can be when we apply significant amounts of hardware horsepower to it.” So. New CPU, new GPU, the ability to deliver unprecedented visual and audio effects in a game (and maybe a PSVR sequel at some point). That’s all great, but there’s something else that excites Cerny even more. Something that he calls “a true game changer,” something that more than anything else is “the key to the next generation.” It’s a hard drive. Solid-state drives have been available in budget laptops for more than a decade, and the Xbox One and PS4 both offer external SSDs that claim to improve load times. But not all SSDs are created alike. As Cerny points out, “I have an SSD in my laptop, and when I want to change from Excel to Word I can wait 15 seconds.” What’s built into Sony’s next-gen console is something a little more specialized. To demonstrate, Cerny fires up a PS4 Pro playing Spider-Man, a 2018 PS4 exclusive that he worked on alongside Insomniac Games. (He’s not just an systems architect; Cerny created arcade classic Marble Madness when he was all of 19 and was heavily involved with PlayStation and PS2 franchises like Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, and Ratchet and Clank.) On the TV, Spidey stands in a small plaza. Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early “low-speed” version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact. well there goes my loading time water breaks. That also seems to confirm that next gen dev kits are out so yeah, DAN will most likely be on the console.

Then the only question is whether it will straddle generations. Given the problems that caused with DAI, I can’t imagine they would be enthused by the idea, though if the most optimistic projections of 2020 are accurate then it would make a degree of business sense.

Would it be this much of an issue to design on newer consoles, now that they are (AFAIK) more similar to PCs? I heard that the issue with designing for old-gen (aside from lacking computing power) was that their architecture was much more unwieldy compared to newer consoles.

That is definitely true, expecially in regards of PS3. But the leap between the vanilla versions of PS4/One towards the newer ones might be too far that it might lead to some restriction in implementing certain features.

Yeah, it'll depend on what they want to do. You could have a game essentially built for current gen, then have a next-gen version with just better graphics/lighting/framerate. But you could easily build a game you could not scale back down to current gen - eg. Incorporating large set-piece battles involving with lots of AI NPCs that would only be feasible on next-gen.

While I don't know whether this approach applies their new titles, I seem to recall that they first built DAI for strong PCs first and then had to scale down to make the game work on old-gen (hence changes from demo they presented).

Yeah, BW definitely had a rough time trying to support both generations. And then add to that showing off a vertical slice to the world a year before release. Oh, wait... we can't actually support a bunch of these features - sorry!DA:I was an example of a game (in the end) built for the old gen, with a new gen version having better graphics. It would have been interesting to see what they came up with if they only had to worry about the new gen.

It's funny to me that the whole reason I bought a PS 4 in the first place was for DA I. Now 4 could be the reason I make the jump to 5. Which it sucks there wasn't a game in the interim it is interesting that inspire my fanboyism, or maybe even because of it I may not make the jump immediately.

I thought Trespasser was not available for PS3? I don't know which console my friend uses but it was not possible for him to play Trespasser on it, even though he had had no trouble playing DAI. They just hadn't supported that sort of console going forward. So in order for him to experience that part of the story, I loaned him one of my characters on my PC. That seemed a rather shoddy way to treat people who had bought the original game, particularly as they claimed the whole point of Trespasser was to tie off the Inquisitor's story. That's why I felt Trespasser was more like a trailer for the next game than an epilogue to the old one.

Yeah I just googled and Trespasser wasn't available for PS3. I agree it was shitty.
