NYE 1999? I lived just outside of Philadelphia at the time. Probably drunk and definitely going through a major depression at the time. I'll say the details are extremely vague.

I was to contribute to this thread so I'm going to cheat a little. I was too young to remember it now, but I was told (so many times) that I tried to get drunk with my grandfather's champagne! I stole his cup and hid under the table.

My grandmother died a couple weeks before new years eve that year so I did not celebrate it at all. If I remember correctly I played computer games and the general mood in the family was awful.

I was 22 at the time, so likely pretty well inebriated. At a minimum.

Oh good grief I was twice DragonRacer 's age then. Now she is 2/3rds my age. According to my math skills, in just a few years she will be older than me. Winning! That's about right for me, too. I'm 48.

Da Nang province, was dug in across the riverbed from Charlie. Every hour or so somebody would launch a flare and we'd exchange some fire, then go back to cursing the rain.
Oh wait that was 1969.

I was... 15? Took the train to the city (Frankfurt) with my best friend... and my mom, lol. We watched the fireworks on the bridge. I don't remember it well but I think it was alright. These days I'm almost ready to go to bed early and miss the whole thing entirely. I hate drunk people. Alcohol does little for me. It affects my ability to walk but doesn't seem to affect my brain much. So that's pointless! Smoking weed had no effect either the two times I tried it. I gave up on trying to get stupid many years ago. The past 7 years or so I spent New Year's in my home town watching others shoot up fireworks with my best friend (same as the one from 2000) and splitting up at around 1, both sober. Makes for a nice not hung over New Year's Day! I highly recommend it! The sad part is that I was almost as boring as I am today as a teenager.

I spent it watching Midsomer Murders with my ageing great aunt and playing Theme Hospital. I was only 13 at the time! I was 13 as well, and I spent the evening playing board games with my family and quarreling with my brother. Nothing too special, if I remember correctly.
For me, the only bearable way to enjoy New Year's Eve is with friends and/or family, board games and good food. With a few exceptions, that's the way I spend this night every year.
I couldn't care any less about fireworks of any kind, excessive drinking, or those people who are boring all year long and crawl out of their holes on New Year's Eve to get batshit crazy.

amazingly I was supposed to have been at a party that apparently didnt happen since the venue had closed the year earlier not that I knew about that until a month after the event (bought the tickets a decade earlier, in a rare spot of forethought I actually purchased two in case I had a plus one by then) although I had just come off a 72 hour work stint the baby was ill and I sure as shit wasn't going to drive 200 miles to a reunion event on my own...

Actually, it was quite a fun night. I was 17, still in school, living at my parents place in a small village in southern Germany. Went to the nearest bigger city (Nuernberg, population about 500.000, so not that big) with a friend of mine. We wanted to go to the main castle, which stands atop the hill, overlooking the entire city so you get a good view of the fireworks. When we arrived by train, people were already setting of fireworks here and there (like 4 hours early). On the way from the train station to the castle, you pass this huge Christmas tree. Right when we walked by, some dude managed to start one of those firework rocket things in such a bad way that it got tangled in the tip of the tree and set it on fire (only the tip was burning, around 6 or 8 meters high). We stuck around to watch the fire fighters come along and extinguish the fire before it burned down the entire tree. When we moved on, we passed by the main church of the town (St. Lorenz), it's a beautiful Gothic church but again, right when we walked by, some guy managed to launch a firecracker right into one of the towers (I am not making this up). Nothing really bad happened but somehow the tower amplified the sound, that thing was really REALLY loud. When we finally walked up to the castle at around 10:30 pm, the main square was already packed and people who had already made it up there were throwing firecrackers everywhere, without regard for the people still moving up (including us). Just to give you an impression, here is a picture of what the walk up kinda looks like: Walking up there along the walls, being bombarded with firecrackers from above is probably the closest I ever got to experiencing what a medieval assault on a besieged castle must have been like. The fact that everyone can buy fireworks for New Years Eve in Germany may not be the safest thing to do, but it certainly keeps things interesting.
Anyway, when we finally made it up and onto the inner square itself, it was pretty cool. We had brought quite a few drinks along, including some sparkling wine to cheer with at midnight and we had a really good time celebrating with all the strangers there. Only, the fireworks, we wanted to watch were less spactacular than we thought because at that time, the air was so full of smoke already that you could really see that far. The whole thing felt more like a wr zone than anything festive (which was kinda cool in its own right though, haha).
When we finally made our way back to the train station at around 2am, the city was literally ankle deep in garbage (mostly wrappings of fire crackers and empty bottles. Suffice it to say, Nuernberg partied hard for the millenium and we were right in the middle of it. Didn't envy the people in charge of cleaning up on January 1st though.

I was 7 at the time everything's fun when you're a little kid hm...come to think of it...maybe my parents had a lot of balloons my brother and I were allowed to pop honestly, I only vaguely remember 1999

I was 25, had just spent a good part of the year working abroad. On the Eve, worked in a night club as a bartender, like I had been doing for some other holidays and weekends. So, spent most of the night getting other people more drunk, listening to the same, lame "I will / will not / will never get laid this century again" (depending on the speaker) drivel over and over again all night.
The unusual part of that night was that 5 minutes before midnight we exceptionally closed down the bar, and even all bartenders got to go outside to see the city's fireworks from the street as the city, like many others, had wasted extra money in their explosive show that year. Nice break outside though, although cold. After that, it was back to the bar again, until 5:00 AM. ...and a nice triple-holiday-pay with past midnight rates added in, too. And I still saw a few random fireworks on my way home.

I was working feverishly to stop the y2k bug. The rest of the crack team, code named "The Blue Squad" had given up and resigned themselves to the destruction of the earth and went out drinking. I went back to the green chalk board one more time and realized the fools had been making calculations in imperial rather than metric and were using the Mayan Calendar. I made the correct adjustments and sent out my bug fix at 11:57, 1999 to the net. Disaster was averted.
I'm really not supposed to talk about it but since it has been so long I felt you all should know.

I don't remember 13 and New year's being a thing. really? you must have had a crap childhood, I stayed up for it the last three years of primary school and by the time I was 13 I was joining all the old farts in the local village pub (under protest I would rather have been at home playing some game or other and maybe remembered to look outside and watch the fireworks some other idiots paid for) by the time I was 14 I was enjoying being in the pub thanks to the wonders of local scrumpy.... but that was all some years before y2k.... actually knowing what booze hounds my olds were I wouldn't be surprised if they kept us up to see in the new year from birth but since its hard to remember anything much before about age 7 I cant really say... (they made a lot of mistakes with me and my first sister, ones they didnt make for the other two due to the age gap... babies to save the marriage... not a mistake ive made for sure, then again I havent needed to either our happy accident came along as my wife was waiting on a tubal ligation which was done during the birth, even if we weren't sure having another one was a good idea at the time it all worked out as it was meant to) on the flip side I have let my kids see in the new year since they expressed a wish to do so around 2 years old by advising them to get in a nap from about 3pm till around 9pm, mostly because we lived in Germany back then and fireworks on new years was a big thing they weren't going to sleep through... and they have constantly done something to celebrate ever since even if its as mundane as watch it on tv and look out the windows to see if theres any fireworks or been to some event or other one year we did the 32 hours of new year the place had a space for kids to sleep on mats but they did fireworks and songs every time it was new year somewhere the trick being you could only by from the bar for 30 minutes an hour although food was a none stop conveyor and everyone who stayed awake for at least 12 hours got a T-shirt - the kids thought they were great- and if you completed the entire ordeal without going to sleep of falling over drunk despite toasting in every hour with a double and at least a pint of beer you got a trophy and some other stuff, that year 3 of us made it me the wife and the barman nobody could believe how good the kids were in going for naps between toasts either (the bell ringing for each new year woke them up in time for the toast lol) despite that being I think 2005 that was probably the best NYE party ive ever experienced, (strange given it was a year since my daughter had died, which was probably why we did something so crazy in the first place) the only thing thats come close to it was the Portsmouth 200 celebration and only becasue I didnt have to work or leave the house:) but yeah some things you should celebrate from a young age, and NYE AHE and the 4 equinoxes are amongst them (since we have a summer solstice baby we have to celebrate it twice) and not just due to traditions (although those are important) but if you dont do it then it takes a lot longer for it to work for you!

you must have had a crap childhood ya, that's what people tell me whenever they hear about it. When people say they miss childhood, I don't relate. Because who would want that utter powerlessness again... eh. the last time I celebrated new years was 2010. like others in this thread, I dislike inebriation, inebriated people. Add to that I hate large crowds and it's just not there for me.

Because who would want that utter powerlessness again... eh. the last time I celebrated new years was 2010. like others in this thread, I dislike inebriation, inebriated people. Add to that I hate large crowds and it's just not there for me. yeah my wife is like that these days, me I cant go out the house without the promise of getting to have at least one drink, I mean neither of us were massive drinkers in the past we just did it to be sociable (well not since we got past the i'm 18 stage of life which to be honest was only a year or so after we got married, which literally was when she turned 19....) as to childhood everyone has some memories that are at least ok if not good, and if yours was anything like mine it probably didnt involve your parents, but then the day I was able to I left home and joined the military (even now I cant actually figure out how I spent 9 months at college and still managed to join up a month before I was 16, best I can figure is my parents lied to get me in school early which would explain why I struggled so much in the early years and why I was always the smallest compared to my class mates, and yes I hated school as well, in the 26 years since I left I havent spoken to 2 people I knew when I was there and only becasue I couldn't avoid them) as for crowds you might of noticed I only mentioned going to events once or twice, thats on purpose since I prefer to stay in small gatherings and y2k was no exception, and in the last 18 years there have only been 2 times I havent been at home or at work on NYE, I still managed to sing the songs though (well more kind of crooned badly) as to missing childhood, not a chance in merry hell do I miss it, I love my wife and kids and am proud I'm nothing like my own parents, for a start I have twice as much brain power as the both of them put together, for a second I actually wanted children and I love my partner, having been forced to care for my kid sisters I also know how to look after babies since failure was met with pain and hunger....my kids otoh are always lamenting being younger and not just becasue the grumpy old git in the corner was fit and active and taught them how to surf or other cool shit... but because they actually liked how they were treated and of course we spoiled them rotten with all sorts of stuff and even more so with love and guidance rather than just being horrible, we always told them the options and the consequences (and always followed through with anything that needed it no matter how minor) now they all have jobs and even the crazy one (shes even got a certificate to prove it from the local nut house) are well liked due to attitude and demeanour and the deference they show to others, although the autist does struggle with some things and he can only take stupid so much.... we all have our crosses to bear though... but I always liked a good party since it was a chance to put on a show and pretend to be soemthing I wasn't (growing up that meant happy never mind it was a literal escape from being a slave)

I was a late teen. Me and my mom and dad went to the theater and saw a production of The Black Rider, which I really loved. After the show, we walked most of the way home as people were getting ready to start partying. My dad almost got himself invited to some random party. That's about what I remember.

In our cycle, we did not celebrate NYE. The tradition only began with Primitives born after the Cycle ended.
