Morning, All. Pointing back to an older thread I made (somewhat) about Player-to-Player Communication, using/needing headsets and mics- and me not owning one...I have recently been considering making the purchase of a proper gaming headset. Now, I already have a set of nice headphones (a set of BOSE AE2s, the original silver and black ones from 2013 or thereabouts), and they're great for gaming at night when other people in the house are sleeping, or listening to music etc. Just a great set. However, I recognize they're not a proper 'gaming headset' (ie with a mic or 'surround sound' or any other bells and whistles that may come included), and lately I've been thinking in preparation for ANTHEM (or even after its release) at some point, I should splurge and buy myself a proper gaming headset.
Now, as I already have a perfectly good set of headphones...I do recognize that I might just be throwing away money (I mean, for what is likely going to be just one game that I would use them for why spend hundreds of dollars just because I can?) And I hate spending money especially on myself. I'm so tight, I *squeak*. SO, therein lies my predicament. I need to decide if I am going to buy a fancy gaming headset just so I can play ANTHEM.
BUT, I don't even known what any good quality brands are. I mean, general listening headphones for music etc I would go BOSE without question, and I know other top of the line brands include AKG (which is owned and operated as part of Harmon Industries/Harman-Kardon), B&W, Sennheiser, AudioTechnica, Technics (a division of Panasonic) and many more. But what are good, top-quality brands for gaming headsets? Companies like Logitech,, SteelSeries, RAZR or TurtleBeach are the only ones I'm even vaguely familiar with.
Does anyone have any suggestions as for what brand I should consider? I'd be looking for something that is good ol' fashion quality (well made, won't break or fall apart easily) along with kick-ass sound (good quality sound, not tinny or light sounding) and of course if I'm gaming for a few hours, they have to be comfortable to wear for any length of time.
Thoughts/suggestions?

The integrated mic is the the most important part. I'd rather have a single earphone with a good mic than a top tier Sennheiser with no mic.
My advice? Don't waste your money on those overpriced gaming headsets. I've gotten by on $15 stereo headsets and just treated them as disposables -- the cable tends to break at the headset end.
My current headset has lasted several years of rather punishing use. It's a wireless non-gaming ASUS headset that I got for $50. I finally sprung for wireless because I got tired of the cable breaking. Anything in the $30-$60 range should be fine.
Keep in mind what you'll be listening to. While the game audio is important -- and your Bose should be used for that when not playing with other players -- while playing with other players, what you'll hear most is their heavy breathing (insist on Push-to-Talk), belching, yelling at their kids, the TV playing the background -- in other words, a lot of stuff that isn't worth spending a lot of money on.

My first bit of advice would be to play the demo or the game for a few days, see what the voice comm situation looks like, and decide from there if you want to invest in a good headset or not. What version are you planning to play? PC? XBox? PS4? On PC, I use this Razer one that I enjoy quite a bit: Razer KrakenOn my PS4, I just use Sony's wireless brand and it's worked well for me for years now: PlayStation Gold Wireless

Hi Charlie. Thanks for your post, you've given me things to consider. I never thought about the extraneous environmental sounds (mouth breathing, belching, yelling at kids etc) that would be in the background and possibly deterring from the gaming experience and/or hearing the sounds that are actually in the game...and those extra sounds aren't what I'd have paid to listen to-- you're absolutely right on that account. You're also right that it's not really necessary to throw money at fancy brands and gimmicks when a simple, inexpensive set would do just fine. All good things to take into account.
Thanks for your advice.

When I was looking into buying a new headset I did a bunch of reading on this. And I learned that gaming "surround sound" headsets are mostly gimmicky, and that high quality "regular" headsets are the way to go.
I had a good Razer "surround sound" headset originally, then moved to a Philips Fidelio X2 set... I believe (I'm at work right now) and an inexpensive DAC. The audio quality difference was *night and day*. I think the first game I fired up with the Philips was DA:I, and even the spell sound fx were starkly better.
It's just that it doesn't come with a mic on its own, though you can buy mics that can just clip onto your headset.

This is an awesome thread Energizer Bunny 211 , I think it's well worth making an official discussion over and above a one-off question.
As an Xbox player, I've struggled with this. Firstly, I use a Headset Adapter, so that I can: - Open and mute my own chat audio at an easy button press.
- Rebalance the game audio and chat audio.
Next headsets: I've tried basic and better Turtle Beach headsets, but the issue for me is that I don't find them very comfortable, my ears get all hot ! I've tried an in-ear solution as well, but they irritate the inside of my ears. I'm currently using some earbuds with an in-line mic, they are comfy and they do the job. But I'm still looking for a 'perfect' comfortable in-ear solution with a good mic. *apparently Apple branded EarPods cause a whining noise. Apple. Bless...

The only in-ear headset/mic I ever liked and found comfortable was this one specifically made for PS3... that thing was my connection to the world in ME3MP.

How do I go about making this a larger discussion topic? Thank you for posting pictures of various styles and brands of headphones/earbuds to consider. I personally prefer over-the-ear, or around the ear styles (such as the Bose that I have, the AE 2s) as the small ear bud styles often, as you pointed out, irritate my ears and cause ear aches/headaches. Also, as I have recently been diagnosed as Hard of Hearing (a hearing loss in both ears between 70 and 100 db across a frequency bandwidth of 125hz to 4000 hz) and have begun to wear hearing aids that are molds of my ears and ear canals, the ear bud styles wouldn't actually work for me as I would have to take my hearing aids out and put those in. Plus traditional fitting headphones are far more comfortable in my experience.
But thankyou again for your input. How would I turn this into a larger discussion vs a single topic thread?

Hi Squeaky,
I'm on PC. I have some high end headphones to listen to music, but those would not be my choice for gaming … they'd get pretty hot and sweaty. I have inexpensive ear buds that came with my mp3 players, however regardless of the ear piece I choose, they don't seem to stay in.
My PC has a THX 5.1 surround system, which I really like. So instead of a headset, I use push-to-talk and a separate stereo directional microphone set to narrow field and noise cancellation. I don't have a bunch of background noise and the directional mic does a good job of not picking up game sounds, because of the locations of my mic and speakers (really hate it when folks go "hot mic" and have external speakers … grrr).
If you already have a decent set of headphones that you like, are comfortable to wear and you don't have a lot of background sounds at your place, then a standalone mic and push-to-talk set up in Origin (I use left ctrl), you should be good to go. The mic does not need to be high end, just good enough to pick up your voice well enough for folks to understand you … and hopefully not pick up a lot of background noise. If your game sounds are coming over headset, you avoid the problem with external speakers, hot mics and game sounds. That leaves background noises as your only issue. Again, an inexpensive mic should do fine. After a few games, muscle memory will kick in and using your pinky finger for push-to-talk activation of L-CTRL will become second nature. So when you are just playing SP elements of Anthem … the mic just sits there, but you don't have to switch to a different headset for MP.
As far as others creating a lot of extraneous noise over their mics … it is easy to mute individual players. It was a bit more complex in ME3MP, but BioWare made it easy to fix that in the lobby in MEAMP and with just a bit more effort, you can mute someone in game … for example someone with a hot mic that joins while the game is in progress and not in the lobby. I would bet that Anthem will be at least as easy as MEAMP to mute the noisy folks.

Most comfortable headset I have ever used was the Razer Carcharias. Easy to wear for hours. Gone thru two of them. Issues was the in line volume control eventually goes bad causing one side to stop working. Currently using Plantronics Rig 500 Pro. The are comfortable and sound is real nice. Been happy with them so far. Only issue is cord is too short for my use and I had to get an extension as they plug into back of my PC.
Mine are the top center one in link.

I am in the same boat for I have tried way too many headsets over the years and I keep getting severe headache from using them for more then 30min. My approach with Anthem is just to have a mic sitting on my desk and make the best use of that. Now I have not found one yet, but that is the solution I am going to try this time.

It does have the effect like he's maybe 45cm away from the mic, but never a problem hearing anything.

I'm a big fan of Turtle Beach headphones. I owned one pair for my Xbox 360, which completely improved my CoD and Left 4 Dead sessions. I have another pair for my Xbox One, which I was gifted, but ideally I would have upgraded to a bit pricier one (but free is free!). Thinking about getting one for my PS4, but I don't really do multiplayer on there, so it's a bit of a "someday" purchase.
Anyway, I've always had great luck with Turtle Beach. Quality is good, they have different sets at different price points, and the features included in even the less expensive ones are very useful.

I have heard good things about them over the years, too. For now, I think I'll probably play the Demo when it's opened on January 25th, see what ANTHEM is all about, see how the gameplay works etc, and then maybe down the road I'll decide if I really want/ need a gaming set-up. But if I do, I'll certainly keep Turtle Beach in mind.
Thanks again.

Re: over-the-ear, on-the-ear, around-the-ear, in-the-ear This is a big consideration also, almost as big as built-in mic quality. I've found that they only way to know is to try each type out. I ruled out over-the-ear fairly quickly, too uncomfortable and greasy. In-the-ear gave me ear canal pain. On-the-ear was Goldilocks "just right" for me! I haven't tried around-the-ear. BTW, one drawback of wireless is battery life. Usually it's long enough for a gaming session if I start off fully charged, but I don't always remember to charge it while offline.

I have ditched Razer in the last year, and have no synapse installed on my system for the first time in I can't remember. The answer for me was the SteelSeries Arctis 7. Wireless, no discernible lag, good simulated surround for enemy location, good battery life, compatible with consoles. Very happy, after years of Kraken and other decent wired Razer headsets. Wireless is key, just makes them a little heavy. I also decided to ditch wires for my mouse, as the Logitech G703 does a great job of minimizing input lag and also has long battery life. You can also charge through the mousepad if you like, but I didn't want inductive charging happening while I'm playing - call me paranoid I don't care Old Logitech F710 for gamepad action on either my HTPC or gaming desktop; again for the wireless. It is old though, probably laggy by today's standards although in its day it was the shit. Works great for emulators! Has a physical switch for DirectInput/xinput, lovely for older PC games. I am still waiting to upgrade the desktop... Entire system will get swapped to HTPC case, just add the HTPC HDD and I have even more games on that pig, and it will be an emulation beast that I can sandbox. The reason for waiting? Waiting for G-Sync to die. Come on Team Red, make a relevant GPU again so I can finally ditch Nvidia. Their anti-consumer practices have continued for too long. I really want a better monitor I just refuse to buy one while this dick dance continues.

After several years of faithful service, my Logitech G35 broke about two weeks ago, so I decided to go ahead and get the headset I've had my eyes on for over a year now, the Beyerdynamic MMX300 (2nd gen), combined with a Creative Sound BlasterX G5.
The MMX300 delivers excellent 7.1 surround sound, is comfortable to wear for many hours due to its light weight and very soft over the ear speakers, and almost indestructible since the entire framework is made of darkened spring steel. I consider it a lifetime investment.

I needed a usb headset as I use a gaming laptop with no mic input on the audiojack. I settled for the Steelseries Arctis 5 as it's usb (the other Arctis headsets have audio jack inputs as normal, so the rest of this post counts for the other versions too).
It's very comfortable, my ears don't get hot, and the mic adjusts easily. The Youtube reviews kept saying the mic sucks, but ppl tell me I sound good so *shrug*. I like that I can easily angle it away from my mouth to minimise any popping, and retract it into the headset if needed. It also has a wheel that toggles between game sound and chat, so I can turn the game down and people up at one turn of a dial.
I did try another headset first, and it was my first over ear design. I found it very off putting, I couldn't hear a damn thing of my surroundings and was worried the same would be true here. However the Arctis has soft fabric ear cups that block most sound, but not all, so if someone walks to my room I hear them without being interrupted by the world. It's a good balance imo.
And it just goes to show, that first set had the best Youtube reviews, the Arctis 5 did not. Yet I prefer it in the end.

Having played the first segment of the Anthem Demo and experienced what the gameplay mechanics are like, I have noticed that while I could certainly play just listening to my own game on a pair of BOSE AE2 over-the-ear headphones, there were several times when I wanted, needed and wished I could talk to other players in order to communicate ideas, goals, tactics etc...and I wished I had owned a proper Gaming headset with a microphone.
It is for this reason that I have recently revisted the idea of purchasing a Gaming headset for PC.
The brands I have considering are (though not in any order)
1. Sennheiser Gaming One or Gaming Zero
2) Plantronics RIG 600HD or 800HD
3) STEELSERIES Arctis PRO/5/7
4) Logitech G933 Artemis Spectrum
Between those models listed, can anyone give me their recommendations and reasons as to why or why not? The more feedback anyone can give me, the better as it would help me make the most informed choice.
Many Thanks!

The Plantronics 800HD looks identical to my RIG 500 Pro. I love my 500Pro set. Very comfortable and again sound is real good. They do block a lot of outside noise. I would buy these again. I never tried the others so can't comment on them.
One thing I will say. I'd rather buy in store so I can try them on if displayed. Nothing worse then buying headphones and find they hurt the ears.
