Any fans here of this not so well known series? Dynasty Warriors (真・三國無双 Shin Sangokumusō, "True ・ Three Kingdoms Unrivalled") is a series of hack and slash action video games created by Omega Force and Koei. The series is a spin-off of Koei's turn-based strategy Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, based loosely around the Chinese historical text Records of the Three Kingdoms, from which it derives its name in Japanese.Recently, Dynasty Warriors 9 was released as an open world game and it got really bad reviews. I am the first to admit the games aren't really that great, but I really like the story of the Three Kingdoms and the characters, especially the Kingdom of Shu Favorite characters: Zhao Yun, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu

I used to play DW. I think the series hit its high point long ago with DW5. That one had the best assortment of battles, playable characters and mechanics. The further into anime territory that the series went, the less interested I was.
I love the Sanguo Yanyi, and the great Chinese Classics in general. (I finally read “Outlaws of the Marsh” last year and still laugh about specific passages frequently.) While DW has gone too far afield to scratch my Three Kingdoms itch, I enjoy the RoTK strategy(rpg) series. The last version, if played with the expansion, is really good in many ways. It should’ve been bundled less expensively, and could’ve been more strategicallly challenging, but it’s a lot of fun.
DW has seen a lot of changes in its last few iterations, but few are changes that matter. The addition of that huge, open (empty!) map completely undermined the point of the game. They’d do well to upgrade the series in more obvious ways, but I’m not holding my breath. My lack of interest now doesn’t diminish my fond memories of playing DW2 thru 5 back in their time. They introduced me to one of the world’s great novels (several of them, by extension), and probably my personal favorite. I’ll always be grateful for that.

I agree Dynasty Warriors 5 was the best. I think one of the problems too is that they focused less and less on story. There are just so few in-battle cutscenes and character interactions. We don't have more Guan Yu vs Hua Xiong, Zhou Yu vs Zhuge Liang, etc. Also, they dropped some very interesting stuff, like the duel system, the bodyguard system...
And although I think DW5 is still the best, the hypothetical routes from DW8 was really really good.
