I'm just curious what, if any, headcanons others have about Adaia Tabris. In particular, how do you think Duncan knew / knew of her enough to try and recruit her.
Personally I think she is of at least Rivaini heritage, possibly even Rivaini born. I like to think that she fought as part of Loghain's Night Elves during the rebellion when she was young. If she was born in Rivain, not sure how she came to be in Ferelden. Also not sure about the gap between the Rebellion and her almost recruitment to the Wardens and subsequent marriage to Cyrion… Yeah, I have a few games in my Adaia timeline..... I do think she died during Leliana's Song - possibly sacrificing herself fighting helping the other prisoners escape (it's the only reason I can think that she wouldn't have returned to her family).
So has anyone else thought about her story?

The Rivaini ancestry sounds neat, but I have to ask, Rivaini in what way? Fereldan with Rivaini elf ancestry going back centuries and no one remembers, but the Fang was passed down through the generations from the forests of Arlathan, to Minrathous, to Rivain, to the Dales, and later Ferelden?
Or Rivaini in the sense that she's just an immigrant?
My personal headcanon is that she was also a Night Elf (and thanks to her stories about Loghain, and that strange redhead with the Orlesian accent), my Kieran Tabris has Gollum/Smeagol approach to humans. It makes for fun roleplays. We likes the humans, we will be their heroses. No, we hate the shemlen. Flat-ear! Flat-ear!
Expanding on that canon, she's a city Elf whose mother was Dalish, who left her clan to elope with some elven mercenary. Things didn't go well, and the grandmother was no hunter, but a craftsman, so after her lover died, she raised their daughter, Adaia, as a widower, alone in a filthy Alienage in Denerim. This made Adaia wild and adventurous, rebelling against both the Alienage system and the Dalish customs, viewing both as flawed, setting them up for failure because of their rigid traditionalism. The only value she found in historical artifacts was in their practicality. In other words, as a pragmatist, she kept the dagger she inherited from her mother only for its edge and possibility to conceal. Like a fancy, old, elfy shiv.
Yes, I retro-actively named all my male Suranas, Tabris' and Mahariels into Kieran, so that his child, or the child of the other Warden, regardless of their identity, and regardless of the nature of the soul of said child, shares the same name as the father of Kieran/lover or best-friend of Morrigan, depending on the play-through of course. I like this tidbit, especially when Alistair says that my Warden would have loved the name. If only I could decide on Dalish, Magi or City Elf

Personally I've going with Rivaini born, with at least one of Adaia's parents being Rivaini. Rivain seems to have a more welcoming attitude toward elves (which could help explain how Adaia had the opportunity to become a skilled as she is supposed to be), and have a better relationship with magic/mages and more paying lip-service to the Chantry than actually being devout Andrastians (which would lend itself my Tabris' rather conflicted opinions on the two - Adaia's more liberal beliefs playing against Cyrion's more strict Andrastian upbringing). Not quite sure how/why she came to Ferelden though and ended up fighting in its rebellion. Maybe if one of her parents was Ferelden she immigrated there and said parent found work in one of the rebellion's camps. Adaia basically said "screw that" to working in the camp and was one of the ones recruited into the Night Elves where she could make use of her skills. (Although having one of her parents Dalish would more easily explain Fang being a family heirloom. But then again maybe Adaia had a Dalish grandparent or great-grandparent...) My personal headcanon is that she was also a Night Elf (and thanks to her stories about Loghain, and that strange redhead with the Orlesian accent), my Kieran Tabris has Gollum/Smeagol approach to humans. It makes for fun roleplays. We likes the humans, we will be their heroses. No, we hate the shemlen. Flat-ear! Flat-ear! Poor Tabris, growing up on stories of Adaia's time during the Rebellion. Thinking of Loghain as one of the few noble and good shems, and then bam! Ostagar happens. (Love the Gollum analogy though )

(Love the Gollum analogy though ) Hey, because of such headcanons I can roleplay any decision I want without it being forced. I hate to have my Wardens be either illiterate or ignorant because of their economic class. My favorite is after I make Alistair marry Anora to become king, I recruit Loghain, take him with me to finish up the quests in Denerim and RtO. My favorite is when visiting Cyrion with Loghain in the party, then talking with Shiani, then resolving the orphanage veil problem. I can just imagine my Tabris silently judging him. And then the camp talk. Delicious drama. Call him a slaver and he'll call you delusional. During the siege, have Loghain protect the Alienage. It doesn't matter how I finish the game, the more quests I leave post-Landsmeet, the more I like to both hate and love the guy. My elven wardens figure that magical-cancer and nightmares are enough punishments for now. Then practice dummy for my AoE spells. Yes Loghain, good, keep up that agro. Now wait a minute for me to cast Storm of the Century.

The Rivaini people are noted sailors and Isabela's pirate crew often had Elven crewmates, so I don't think it would be unheard for find Rivaini sailors (or any race) in any major port cities around Thedas?
Maybe like Isabela being stranded in Kirkwall in DA2, perhaps Adaia got stuck in Denerim for whatever reason and went to the Alienage for a temporary place to stay, where she first met Cyrion?
Duncan may have gone to the Alienage to look for recruits and been impressed enough to consider recruiting her, but seeing that she'd settled down, forged friendships and relationships in the Alienage, he decided not to make the offer.
Adaia being a Rivaini sailor (or pirate) would explain how she got so adept at fighting.

Wow, it makes so much sense. A deckhand on a pirate ship. I love it!

Sifr - I actually kinda really like that idea, Adaia having been a pirate before coming to Ferelden. Would also explain how she learned her other skills (Tabris, especially rogue Tabris, most likely learned how to pick pockets/locks and such from their mother). The more I sat down and did the math, the more I realized that Adaia having been a Night Elf probably wouldn't work as well time-line wise. She would have probably have had to been around 14 or 15 during their major battles (about 8:99 Blessed) to make it work, which would have put her at around 25-27ish when she had the Warden - about 5 years older than Cyrion (if you go by the toolset which puts Cyrion at 40 in Origins, but then again the toolset has Alistair at 32 when I think he's only supposed to be something like 20-23....). Not an unheard of age for a young member of local militia, but still stretching it. Although if you tweak Cyrion, and therefore Adaia's ages a little to make them older, say both about 50 at time of Origins (since the toolset obvious has at least some ages wrong), it would make her about 19 during the major battles and 30-32 when the Warden is born. A little old for a city elf to be getting married - but then Duncan doesn't say she was pregnant/Warden just born when he attempted to recruit her, just that she was recently married, so they could have been younger when married and had sometime between then and when the Warden was born (basing all this potentially fuzzy math on my warden who was 18 when conscripted). So that second scenario could give Adaia a few years as a young sailor/pirate deckhand before getting stranded in Ferelden. Not unbelievable given that some cabinboys joined the crew young (maybe Rivain sailors aren't superstitious against women on board or she could have disguised herself as a boy), and I think the Chinese pirates took their families with them... Of course if I ditch the idea of her having been a Night Elf (not ready to do so though), her just being a sailor/pirate would mean I wouldn't have to take into account the timeline of the Rebellion at all. Something to think about... Don't mind me, I think I've started rambling to myself at this point, lol

I definitely think she was a Night Elf but probably a teenager when the occupation ended. The fact that nothing changed for the city elves after King Maric took the throne, they were still confined to the alienage and laws were weighted against them, would have been a source of resentment considering he owed his life to the Night Elves, hence the label of being "a bit wild". However, Cyrion caught her heart and that is why she supressed her natural desire to rebel and settled down with him.
Whilst it seems more natural for Fang to have been a Dalish heirloom, since it is a dagger it is something that could have been handed down through the city elves as it would have been easier to conceal when the elves were rounded up and transported throughout Thedas.
