He set off some warning bells, but I didn't care enough to investigate to be honest. I never paid much attention to elf related lore, so most of what he said just made me smile and nod, but all those helpful elven artifacts scattered about the landscape that apparently only he knew about were mighty convenient, weren't they...
I never expected him to be the Dread Wolf or anything like that. Not after all the times I had to revive him because he just had to run into melee or stood in that pool of acid/electricity/patch of fire without moving. Gods just ain't what they used to be.

Now that I think about it, shouldn't veteran dragon age players be more suspicious of Solas just based on the fact he's an apostate? Not that I think all apostates are evil/shady mind you, but one common aspect of all the dragon age games thus far includes the apostate in your party either betraying you or pursuing an ulterior motive.
Morrigan: Is after the Old God soul and only informs the Warden towards the end Anders: Planed to blow up the Kirkwall Chantry without telling Hawke at all Solas: Planning to remove the veil and cause an unfathomable amount of damage while doing so
Guess I have to keep an eye on the apostate next game.

I guess for me it is less that Solas is an "apostate" , as in somebody who does not suck up to the Chantry, but more that he's not been part of any established magical tradition we know up to that point. He was neither schooled in Tevinter's circle academies or southern andrastian prison circles. He's also neither human "barbarian" shaman nor Rivaini Seer nor Dalish-taught. That's rather odd in a world where the majority of the population are biased/racist humans adhering to teachings that demonize magic, yet still think that their magical tradition (the prison circles) is the only valid one - despite where it stems from (Tevinter).

Vivienne Person: You set your coattails the world on fire. Solas: It will go out....eventually. It was not worth mentioning.

Not at all, really, I just thought he was a stuffy dork of a mage who spent way too much time in the Fade, and just accepted things like him knowing how the mark worked as plot contrivance. They did a very good job of disguising his role as ominous plot harbinger behind his stuffy intellectual tendencies.

didn't pick an option because I would need something like "unfortunately was spoilered" someone spoiled that Solas was the Dreadwolf in a FB group I was part of (not anymore after that ) so I knew he wasn't who he was claiming to be and was always on the lookout for words/actions that were fishy

I'm pretty sure I was spoilered on the post-end clip with Mythal before I really had a chance to be suspicious of him in the first place. One reason I pretty much hid under a rock before MEA came out until I finished it the first time.

I had a feeling something was off with him but I wanted my suspicions to be wrong. However, I never could have predicted what he actually was. I was ever so thankful that in my very first playthrough I was a Dalish rogue. I wanted to romance Solas but I missed that cutscene bit where you can unlock it. I thought when they reached Skyhold the dialogue tree had run out for that part of the game. I think it was "Tell me about yourself" and I thought I had already asked him about himself or whatever back at Haven and there were no new options, so that whole cutscene and his personal quest never triggered. My Quizzy went on to romance Cullen instead. I was very thankful that I made that mistake, because I can only imagine how first time players who did romance Solas felt before the big reveal.

I am surprised how he was even allowed to get in there. Like he shows up offering his services, what does he say? How does he introduce himself walking up to the chantry.
"Hello, my name is Solas, I am an elf"
Arrows getting drawn, bowstrings getting taut.
"I'm also a ma-"
"Excellent shot, Smithers, right through the eye socket. That should teach those knife ears to never get close ever again."
That's how I'd expect it to go down, honestly. We have literally no reason to trust him, let alone recruit him. Solas should have been shot on sight.

Though I would amend it to "Chantry humans have no reason to trust him" or something like that. Might be different for the soon-to-be "Herald". If the Chantry fools kill him because he's an elf, what would they do with Cadash (dirty lyrium smuggler!) Lavellan (Heretic heathen knife ears!)or even Addaar (Look, oxen! Wahahahaha!)?

When I met him in the Prologue and saw how Cassandra trusted him, I thought they had known each other for a while, had been working together for a couple of years for her to trust his advice on magical matters that much. After I learned they'd met after the formation of the Breach, I thought wait a minute. She's only known him for a couple of days and is already trusting a random apostate that came from the ass end of nowhere about...some unknown magic? That was when the first alarm bell rang. Then you can talk to Solas and he says there's nothing wrong with blood magic or consorting with demons, claiming they are also spirits. That's when the second alarm bell rang. It was exactly the kind of thing Merrill would tell Hawke to justify using blood magic and consorting with the demon that tricked her into fixing the eluvian. Plus, Solas condemns the Wardens for fighting the Blight the only way they know how when ten years earlier they were the only thing standing between the Archdemon and his darkspawn hordes and the rest of Thedas without providing a justifiable reason for his sentiment toward the Order or suggesting an alternative solution to prevent the Blight, all suspicious actions considering all Thedosians know how much their world suffered under four Blights. Just look at the Western Approach. A vast desert where nothing grows, where life can't thrive because of the taint and its infectious nature. Without Wardens, the world would become covered in nothing but dunes and carcasses of long dead animals and peoples, swept by the sand and the harsh winds.
After all that, my suspicions were that he must've been the Keeper of a reclusive clan that expelled him for some reason, some magic crime he commited. Maybe he had pulled an Anders and allowed a demon to touch his mind? That would explain why he refused to talk about his past and how he knew so much of magic. But the lack of vallaslin threw my theory out of the window, so he remained a weird mystery to me until the final reveal.

I was not at all suspicious, for several reasons:
- I have never read any books about DA - I was not involved in any prerelease hyping, or active on any forums. I had not played DA2 either, for what it matters. Only discovered the game 3 days before release, watched some vids, and pre ordered.
But most importantly, this game has magic, spirits and weird places like the Fade. My suspension of disbelief is already at incredibly high levels.

People were speculating that he was an ancient elf in the old Solas thread - not Fen'Harel, though - but I figured his incredibly specific romance requirements were 'cause he wanted elf babbus. I hadn't heard enough of his dialogue/others' dialogue about him to be suspicious.
But I deliberately spoiled Inquisition for myself pretty much as soon as people were finishing it so it was more of an, "ooOoOhh LORE" moment.

wait wait wait! what did morrigan did wrong exactly? made sure you won't die when illing the archdemon? seriously? if anything she is the opposite of solas in that regard; while no one suspected solas but at the end we couldn't tell his true motives (we still don't know them fully) for morrigan everyone seem to suspect her easily (not sure why, i found her helpful in both games) but at the end her plans seem quite clear. and since the topic of blackwall came up, i knew something was off, but wasn't sure what. if the game would have allowed me to ask the follow up question i had than i would most likely figured it out. so i guess he was lucky the inquisitor didn't have my knowledge of the grey wardens. i didn't see solas coming, i mean i realized who he is when flemeth called him "dread wolf" but that easy by that point. thing is, it was well done because while you might not see it coming, it made perfect sense once you learn the truth. when it came to inquisition, the companion that really took me off guard was the iron bull, you'd expect the spy to be the least forthcoming yet he kept no secret about his loyalties. and say what you will about him possibly attacking us in trespasser, he betrayed no one. he said he is qunari from the start, and while he was helping the inquisition he was clear about his loyalties, he was just doing his job. I had exactly the same reaction to the reveal. We didn't really know enough about the Dread Wolf to be able to reliably identify him, but it made so much sense that I didn't feel super surprised by the reveal. More like, 'ahh, that's what was up!'

I don't understand, nor is it explained, to my recollection, how Solas was allowed to enter the Chantry, let alone become the trusted ally he is portrayed to be. It doesn't make sense to me. Unless Chantry security measures are so lax that anyone can walk in.
"Elf blood mage, eh? Well, I like the cut of your jib. You'll be Cassandra's personal consultant".
Is that how the Chantry works?

Never liked the guy, from the very beginning. He gave me a bad vibe or something. So, I left him alone... not companion material.
From a RPG perspective, that's irrational, sure. I left out a branch of the story... never to be explored. Still, I take with me companions that I trust... especially in battle.
Many posters here like the guy... want him back in DA4, even. Me? I'd dip him in a hydrocloric acid ( H -- CI) bath tub if I could. If he turns out to be the enemy or sides with the enemy, all the better. I'll get the chance to pulverize the little bald weasel.
