So the simple answer is "yes" because all games technically compete for time and dollars of other games. When Red Dead Redemption 2 came out, it was competition for all games because it was so anticipated, takes a lot of time, and is full price.
Realistically, the question is more "does Apex Legends success mean significantly fewer sales for Anthem". To that I would venture a "no" as the answer. Apex is obviously pretty good, but the massive number of players, especially initial players, has a lot to do with the fact that it is FREE as well as coming in a bit of a lull of game releases. Will get keep the massive amount of concurrent players? Maybe, but don't believe it's success didn't have anything to do with timing, price, and the huge onslaught of sudden "marketing" that occurred. It's also a good game, obviously, but a direct competitor for a significant amount of Anthem sales? I think not.

Is it a video game?
Yes, it is a competitor.

Lol at the disgenuity. Porsches and FIFA. The arguments in this thread on one side are so head-in-the-sand I can taste the crab poop in their mouths.
And then there are a few reasonable people breaking walls with their heads.

Feels like a totally different world. And not in a good way...

Given the meteoric rise of Apex legends over the last week, it will certainly hurt Anthem sales. I almost want to cancel my preorder of Anthem because Apex has turned out to be such fun. There are only so many hours of game time that can be split. Maybe EA doesn't care because they get your money in either case, but it might reflect badly on Anthem's adoption rate/sales.

It also explains why many adults cannot play these games, even if they wanted to. Ain't nobody got time fo dat. ... Obviously, I ain't got time for dat. Many do. How they pay their bills remains a mystery.

How they pay their bills remains a mystery. The biggest point the article touched on was time. Some people claims that cause Apex is PvP and Anthem is PvE, then Anthem is immune to any competition from Apex. However this isnt about PvP game competing with a PvE game....it is about time vs time.

Holy hell, that article is stupid. Mammoth single-player games like TW3 only come out one every few years, not exactly hard to find time to play those. Regular SP games release more often, but are way shorter, so again no problem. Just use a MP game of your choice to tide you over from SP game to SP game. I personally was playing WoT for that, but after 23k games I am kind of bored with it, lol.
Anthem = waiting for Subnautica: Below Zero & Cyberpunk 2077

Time... Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time. Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way The time is gone, the song is over, Thought I'd something more to say. I have time for one game at a time. I have to make time for that. Your case, while lovely, is not the same as every one else's.

If you don't have time for a hobby, that is not the hobbies fault. And it's not a problem unique to gaming.
Not really sure what more to say. I guess it helps if you limit yourself to one platform (and save money in the process).

I guess it helps if you limit yourself to one platform (and save money in the process). #PCMasterRace Please, bro, come with a real argument. Obviously I have some time. We all do. Would I rather play a game that I can pick up or drop at my leisure, or a game where if I leave for a while the game leaves me behind and I have to play catch-up with friends helping me to be able to play in the current context? I was never able to keep up with the ME3MP releases. I never played with an un-nerfed Brophoon, or Falcon even I played that game a shitload, and couldn't keep up. This is a game that evolves even more rapidly, if my understanding of GaaS is remotely correct. Cannot keep up, and if I am punished for that (gates me from friends by experience and/or loot) then aw shux I'll play something else. Also, GamerMasterRace here. PS3, PS2, Dreamcast, Asus GW laptop, home built gaming HTPC, home built gaming desktop, Shield tablet and Shield TV. Wife has a 3DS for a little non-emulated Nintendo flavor. The other part of the time conundrum - is this chase of intangible stuff in a pretty world worth my time without some compelling story to drive my interest? That question is an easy one to answer for me.

Also, I really wish I still had my Dreamcast, that machine was so ahead of it's time.

I'm not convinced that the mere existence of a PvP game somehow converts SPlayers and coop players to PvP players. Of course there is overlap but that's not gonna gobble up players. I rather think the whole MP market is saturated. Looter shooter is saturated. Remember the days when Billy and his dog would publish WW2 shooters. Zombie Survival games? There is already Division, Destiny and Warframe out. You played them, there is also a good chance you're kinda done with the grinding part of these games and look for something entirely different.

Of course it is Anthem's competitor and of course it will directly affect sales. If anybody thinks opposite, the're just deluding themselves. Nobody I know is strictly anchored to one very specific genre; most people play quite a few of them.
As it has been already stated in this very thread; it's mostly about free time and (free) price. I do believe many people who jumped into Apex two weeks ago are now looking at mediocre Anthem reviews and wondering "why should I pay 60 euros for that?", when their time is being consumed by highly polished, highly addictve and FREE game.

Are the PvE and PvP markets actually separate? (I don't MP myself.) Assuming Apex Legends and Anthem are in the same genre, or close enough to share players, is there room for more than one winner? GaaS and MP combined are going to result in turning network effects up to 11, aren't they? Even if I like Anthem better than Apex Legends, if everyone I know is playing Apex....

Well, you take a player who wants to chill a bit in cooperative gameplay with some fellows or friendly strangers, maybe solo vs AI a bit. And then toss them into a competitive environment so they can git gud.
What do you think? They will all unanimously like it? Cos is "MP"?

Well, that's why I'm asking. If I'm playing with a bunch of fellows, I don't think I'd particularly care if we were playing against AIs or against other humans; for me the question is whether I want to play with other people in the first place.

Definitely is for me. I had the LoD edition preordered, played the VIP demo, open demo, and 10-hour EA Access trial and enjoyed my time. However, Apex Legends has been much more enjoyable. I even spent $20 on Apex Legend cosmetics. I should have been so hooked on Anthem's story after playing 10 hours that I would grab my pre-order as soon as it was available. Instead I think I'm fine waiting a couple months for the bugs to get ironed out and new content to drop.
Depending on my work schedule I might only have 1-1.5 hours per day to play a game for a week at a time. Playing Apex Legends that's only a couple matches if you're playing well. On Anthem I got to the point where the story stalls (being vague to avoid spoilers). I don't want to spend hours slogging through that. Not saying a solo-only player is gonna be happy with Apex Legends, but a lot of people enjoy both singleplayer and multiplayer. Those people could really choose Apex Legends over Anthem.
