So earlier I read a comment from Nightscrawl wondering why we don't have a thread yet to talk about mythological creatures and such in a general sense
And me (being a (self proclaimed) mythological nerd) thought to myself, why the hell not?
So in that regard, here's a thread to talk about all things mythical, legendary and general folklore
-- To kick of the thread what is your favorite mythical creature? What is your favorite myth or legend?
For me those are quite simple Dragons are one of my all time favorite creatures, along with gryphons/griffins (however you want to write it), pegasi and mermaids
As for my favorite myth or legend, I have way to many of those but I love the idea of Mother Earth (who is a mythological entity in some variation or another)
--
Also here's a few random myth trivia's from me Did you know there are three types of dragons? There's the European dragon (with four legs and bat-like wings), the Asian/Chinese dragon (long serpentine body with four legs and no wings) and lastly the Mexican dragon (with bird-like wings and no legs)
The Greek God Hades is typically portrayed as an evil entity in media due to his dominion over death, but did you know that out of all the gods he's one of the more faithful ones to his wife Persephone? Speaking of Persephone, if you thought Hades was dangerous...wait 'till you meet her, as a dual goddess of fertility and death she was just as dangerous (if at times not more so) as he

Lizards with burning skins are not properly called pyroderms but salamanders. At least that's what they were in medieval times.

^ Timestamped to the dragon myth. Brief mention and showing of Atlantis too.

A favourite is hard to choose. I like more elegant, beautiful, whimsical stuff like phoenixes and unicorns and the like. And I prefer it when folklore creatures are friendly, as opposed to monsters that should be feared (although good folklore ha a balance of both).

There's the European dragon (with four legs and bat-like wings), the Asian/Chinese dragon (long serpentine body with four legs and no wings) and lastly the Mexican dragon (with bird-like wings and no legs) There's also Ancient Greek dragons, who are basically giant snakes. As for favorite myths or mythological creatures, I have a fascination with fairy folklore, fairy abductions, changelings, and tales of mortals wandering in and out of Elfland (also known as Faerie, the Otherworld, the Land of Many Colours, the Perilous Realm, and so on). While these archetypes are somewhat specific to Northern European folklore, there are parallels in stories all around the world, from Ancient Greece to Medieval Japan.

I also love that many creatures transcend across cultures
I'm always surprised when I find new things that are related to one another, or by how different people interpret a certain story

speaking of which one myth that has always intrigued me is the one of the Four Beast Gods... present in many Asian Cultures they are said to protect the four cardinal directions (compass directions) a lot of information on them (and other aspects of Buddistic mythology) can be found on this site link
interestingly, some time back I wanted to know if aside from the Greek and Roman mythologies if there were other old European cultures that knew about griffins that's when I came across the Landvaettir, who serve a similar function to the beast gods but are found in Iceland one of the creatures of the Landvaettir is an eagle (sometimes griffin)

I think it's interesting that when Tolkien first introduced Orcs they were these evil unsightly creatures who's only function was cannon fodder nowadays however, mainly due to games like Elder Scrolls and (in some cases) World of Warcraft, orcs have transformed into noble warriors, which I think is quite interesting

Dragons, griffons, firelizards, unicorns, centaurs and pegasus' would be my favourite creatures, as for legends/myths I suppose it would depend on how far back you want to go. The Happy Prince is a story written in 1888, by Oscar Wilde. When I saw this animation as a kid, I fell in love with the story:
There is also the story of Riki Tiki Tavi from The Jungle Book, written by Rudyard Kipling in 1894 :
But if you mean favourite that goes back further and is a part of folklore/ancient mythology ... hmmm... I think the stories of Athena and Artemis are some of my favourites. I really enjoy most Greek/Roman myths.

I think one of the first person to use the word "orc" was Blake; he named one of his gods "Orc." Though interestingly, Orc was a good god, not an evil, scary one. To answer first post: My favorite mythological creature will always be the dragon. I've been obsessed with dragons since I was a child; I used to collect statues and such of dragons, and I was a massive Dragonriders of Pern fan (still waiting for the mini-series, hello!) Nothing compares to dragons for me. I wish there were more novels with sentient, shape-shifting dragons because those are my favorite kinds. My favorite myth, hmm, there are so many, mostly Greek/Roman (cause it's what I know best). Obviously I love Artemis; love how she murdered a guy just for looking at her naked. Also surrounded herself with sexy nymphs and was like a Friend to the animals, so, #goals. But the hunting of Actean is definitely a favorite. Apollo and Hyacinth breaks my heart, forever and always. Dionysus and Eurydice. Cupid and Psyche, ahh... especially Apuleius' version (which may be the first, written down?). Yes, definitely, that one's my favorite. I love how Cupid is the one taken, and Psyche is the one who must "rescue" him (sort of). A reverse trope. Okay, I really like romance.

As far as myths go, I generally like stories involving trickster and thief archetypes and that carries over into the contemporary fiction I like to read as well.

Okay, I really like romance. my first fantasy creature I started collecting things for were fairies, I have at least 6 small statues of them (one of which has broken hands because my mom accidentally knocked it over one time)
My love for dragons was kindled after seeing the movie Dragonheart, which to date (imo) still has the most beautifully made dragon in it ever especially considering the movie was made in 1996, meaning the cgi wasn't that great back then I mean, just look at him the dragon in question is called Draco (voiced by Sean Connery), which he himself finds hilariously ironic due to the fact he insisted on not being called dragon, but he asked the knight (the man in front of him) to name him (because his real name would be hard to pronounce), to which he called him Draco after the dragon constellation The movie has a bit of a sad ending, but it's still amazing
Due to the fact I watch(ed) a lot of anime I've also grown quite fond of Asian mythology for example, know how we have that 'man in the moon' thing? Well, in China it's a rabbit, but they also have a myth about a princess who eventually traveled to the moon and became it's princess which became inspiration for one of the more iconic anime of the 90's, Sailor Moon
I also find it interesting that Pokémon also borrows a lot from mythology as well
another (not so well known) anime that borrows from mythology is Shinzo, which is inspired by the story Journey to the West

Many people don't even know about Dragonheart, which is quite sad since it's a great movie (also did you know the guy who plays the King eventually plays Professor Lupin in Harry Potter?)
I love the line where Bowen names Draco and he's like: so instead of calling me dragon you just call me dragon in another language? plus I love how at the end he (Draco) becomes part of the Draco constellation, like all the other great dragons before him I love constellation stories in general
Speaking of other good Sean Connery movies, ever seen the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen? it puts together quite a few stories (among which Dracula, the Portrait of Dorian Gray and Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde) in an interesting mix

The ending of Dragonheart always makes me tear up too. The Narration and the question "What will we do, where will we turn?" and the answer "To the stars, Bowen, look to the starts..." OMG...it still gets to me, just thinking about it. It's one of the very few movies that ever got to me that way, I'm always guaranteed to mist up over it. Sean Connery did such a good job as Draco.
Yup...David Thewlis played both King Einon and Professor Lupin. He's done other stuff too. Saw him in a remake of The Island of Doctor Moreau and in Dinotopia. And yeah that dragon name comment was cute, there were a lot of good banters between Draco and Bowen though...poor Sir Eggelmore! And poor Draco when they got to that village and he couldn't sink to the bottom of that pond..."Meat! Meat!" It was a fun show, Dennis Quaid, Dina Meyer and Pete Postlethwaite were also all pretty good. And yup, Draco got his place amongst the stars... ...awwww...that ending... Yes, I did see League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, another fun show. That kind of story is right up my alley, actually. Things like VanHelsing, Hellboy, Dragonheart...or anything sci-fi like the Alien or Predator movies.

I love that scene, it's so funny I'm like; guys...there's pigs and stuff around you there's plenty of meat, why do you want to eat the dragon? Also that monk who shoots people in the balls
My family and I love using movie quotes to illustrate certain moments (especially me and my dad) like, in one of the Asterix and Obelix cartoons there's a scene where Asterix asks how late it is to which Obelix replies: it's 12 past 12 *sound of stomach growling*, Asterix: don't tell me you're hungry yet again Obelix: why wouldn't I be hungry? I'm always hungry at 12 past 12 Now during weekends whenever we have lunch at 12 we wait 'till it's 12 past in order to say 'it's 12 past 12!'
I've only seen the first Hellboy movie, it was pretty good...though I'm personally more of a fan of regular fantasy movies such as Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and such sometimes movies can be a bit to much for me causing my imagination to take a run with certain elements, which in turn gives me nightmares

Hunger Games, Maze Runner and Ready Player One was good also. PERN will always be my favourite fantasy world though, I think. Anne McCaffery put together a really fascinating world with that series...and I agree, I REALLY want to see it come out in a movie series or a t.v. mini-series. Using movie quotes are fun in everyday life, I've been known to do the same thing here. I'm sorry you get nightmares, I really have that issue, but then again, I'm old and I'm used to all kinds of different programs/movies, I don't think I take things to heart as much as some people do.

Reapers from Mass Effect used to give me nightmares especially husks, I only played Mass Effect again last year after 6 years of not playing them that's how bad my imagination can get
I've tried making my own stories in the past, but I'm terrible at getting things on paper, it's all in my head, but once it gets on paper I just don't get very far I also find that it's hard to make something feel unique, as if everything has been done before so it's hard to make something original
I've only seen the first Percy Jackson movie, and the first two of the Chronicles of Narnia
mythology and symbolism has always been a part of fascination for me, as such history was also one of my better subjects back in school I always like scouring out new information about certain things
