When we condensed some of the lesser-used boards last month, HamleticTortoise brought up a pretty good and interesting idea here about restructuring based on genre, rather than by developer.

As we see more developer boards with less traffic (Rockstar and Bungie/Digital Extremes, specifically) combined with several folks chiming in about a preference to browse by genre due to not always knowing which developer made what game, we wanted to get some input from the forum at large.

I rather like the idea of rolling into a few simple genre boards, but the question is - how to best label the genres while also not listing a ton of boards (as I realize it's getting to be a bit of a lengthy scroll these days)?

Here were some initial ideas from back in the Mod Cave. What ideas for structuring do you folks have? How can we best hash out/describe the genres?

General Games Discussion
(Discuss other developers, games and general gaming news.)

BioWare/EA and Legacy BioWare Games
(General BioWare news, Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, KOTOR, SWOTOR, Jade Empire, etc)

Action/RPG
(Assassins Creed, Elder Scrolls, Fallout, SWOTR, Grand Theft Auto, Red Dead, Witcher, Cyberpunk 2077, etc)

Shooter
(Destiny, Warframe, Borderlands, Halo, Overwatch, Fortnite, etc)

If it was my decision, I would probably have:

General Games Discussion

RPG (because BioWare games are mostly RPGs I think a board with only RPG games would be good because target audience... I think?)

Action/Adventure (it would include shooters because Im pretty sure they are all action focused? I havent played that many to know if Im right

)

BioWare/EA Legacy Games.

I think everything else could probably go into the general discussion unless maybe a board with MMO/MMORPGs? Unless thats combined with RPGs...

You know, with enough labels (that could get unwieldy) everything could be collapsed back into one category...

It's not as easy to filter by more than one label, but you CAN through the little spyglass icon/search box when you're looking at the board. You could actually build a filter like:

NEWS + RPG + Bethesda

Yes, that would SERIOUSLY limit the scope, but the functionality does exist.

EDIT: I was reminded that LABELS do NOT work on the MOBILE site - so this is probably not a viable overall solution, unfortunately.

Dont fracture too much. I have a feeling it rather distracts from the traffic / posting. Subdividing by genre seems like a reasonable thing to me. And if you shoot it's a shooter, regardless if it's Horror, Sci-Fi whathaveyou to keep the categories limited. Go by gameplay - not theme.

Ahh, see, I forgot about this, because LABELS do NOT work on the mobile view until ProBoards makes changes to how the mobile view works. So, scratch the Labels idea, even if it would have worked nicely.

I really like the idea of a big bucket, but filterable with labels - but that leaves out anyone on mobile - however, if people using the mobile interface would still prefer one-big-bucket, that would be a good compromise.

Hopefully we can get some more traffic in here, or narrow down the options, and start a poll?

EDIT: DragonRacer, I was distracted and didn’t fully read the OP. I think the genres in the OP are broad enough to be effective. I like those suggested genres.

Would "Narrative Focused" versus "Sandbox" be a useful distinction?

Narrative Focus does sort of seem to be the glue between RPG and Action/Adventure, and might be a reason why some games can be difficult to categorize.

That might not be very clean either, though. I'd be inclined to put Bethesda games in the "Sandbox" category, even though most of them do have a main questline. I notice the OP listed Fallout under Action/RPG, even though it's also a shooter.

There probably isn't a 100% crystal clear way of doing it. What matters is that people can find what they're looking for, and the categories listed here would probably accomplish that.

I agree. Especially since now games are a little bit of anything to make games more attractive to more players. Developers didn't create the genres and really don't advertise what the game is anymore either they might use them as buzzwords, but its us as players that tend to try and shove games into those little boxes.

I really doubt there is a solution that will be able to really accomplish what you are wanting with trying to balance out the load, for I could see having a "RPG" subsection becoming overwhelmed just as much because that might be something people here gravitate to more. The filter idea I think is the best, but it sounds like with these boards it just isn't something that will work. I think just leave it the way it is now and if tweaks are needed take mod/admin privilege and adjust the contents according to your best guess to trying to balance out what is there just give people a heads up before doing it. I don't think there ever will be a best fit without having to make a lot of tweaks.

Ahh, this is an setting I hadn't thought of. Right now it's 30 threads/page - I believe this is the ProBoards default. This can be increased, although 100 threads might be a bit much? I'd like to hear what more people have to say about it... or we can increase it 5 at a time until someone notices and announces their displeasure :whistle:

Do you use the mobile site? I know Kappa Neko mentioned that and also preferred one catch-all.

I'm torn about one thing. Would it be fair to merge things up and use the thread labels to distinguish for people on desktop, but not have that be available on the mobile version (nothing can be done with the mobile site)? I think that might be one of the better options, but it does leave the mobile users a bit high and dry?

I do not use the mobile site, it's just a matter of having a good overview and seeing at a glance which games have been talked about recently, without having to look into several forums. I'm not sure what you're talking about in the last paragraph but one problem with no substructure is that it's hard to make several threads related to the same game, which may be desirable for some very popular games like, say, TW3. I'm not sure how to facilitate that.

I think you're familiar with the thread labels like in the DA FAQ board? ArcadiaGrey suggested earlier that this would be a way to differentiate & filter within one board.

I liked that approach, so I tested it and it does work with the caveat that labels do not work on the mobile version of the site.

In this case, CDPR, Witcher or TW3 could be a label, so, just to see all of the threads that carry that label would be as easy as clicking on the label itself to filter out everything. This is just not something that works on mobile.
