In Inquisition the default origin for an Elf Inquisitor was Dalish. As we are now heading towards Tevinter which Origin would you prefer for your Elf PC if given the choice and why? For me personally a City Elf who was born and raised in Tevinter seems more plausible than a Dalish Elf from a clan that willingly goes to arguably the one place in Thedas you do not want to be if one is an Elf. P.S. I also threw in bonus options for variety's sake.

I prefer player choice, although the ancient elf is very intriguing. "Why are you people wearing slave markings on your face?"

For Tevinter, it should be ex-slave elf.

Ability to choose would be my first choice however, playing a City elf from Tevinter would also be quite interesting

Unless there is a lore reason for it to be not possible, I'd love the idea of being an ancient elf waking up.
Think about it, an actual roleplaying reason for asking "what is an alienage?" or similar.

The problem I see with playing an ancient elf is who you would be aligned with and how much knowledge they have of events. Do you support the Evanuris as a whole? Or just one of them? Do you support the Forgotten Ones (There were apparently elves that did during the time of the Dales and of course those elves in the Tirashan). Do you want to stop the Dread Wolf or, more likely, want to ensure he succeeds? This would make it rather difficult for them to write dialogue for the character that wasn't at total variance with those of other races. I think the writers on the whole are going to assume the new PC will start off wanting to stop Solas, even if subsequently revelations might change their mind.
I've opted for city elf as I feel they would much more easily fit with the story and the likely location of Tevinter. There is a fair bit of scope there for making them different from alienage elves in the south. They could be an ex-slave, the child of former slaves or even still be a slave. However, I think a newly free liberati would be the most interesting and of course you could be any class. As a city elf it would be likely that various factions would try to woo you to their cause, from the Qunari to Solas' agents and you would be far freer to make your choices without it seeming incongruous and out of character as might be the case if you were trying to pull off being an ancient elf.
I'd hold out for an anti-Solas ancient elf as a companion. That might prove interesting.

Think about it, an actual roleplaying reason for asking "what is an alienage?" or similar. I’ve been thinking about something like this for awhile now. Not DA specific, but I would like to see an elf-only RPG where the first 20% of the game is in ancient elfy times before shoving the main character into some kind of enchanted sleep that has them wake up a thousand years later to a world like DA or TW where elves are second class citizens in a human world. There are some interesting things you can do if you embrace the idea of an immortal character in a mortal world.

I'd prefer to have both options, but I would prooooooobably choose city elf? I like the idea of starting off in Tevinter as a slave or something.
But tbh I'm probably gonna play human again.

I'd love it if they had a selection of elf backgrounds (along w/ both a city elf and a dalish elf companion cause dammit I want elves fightn' Solas too) but if I have to pick one then I'd like a City elf.
If the background is slave then it would be fun if, when you pick an elf, you can choose whether you're just a regular tevinter elf slave trying work their way to liberati or a ben hassrath spy whose a slave so that they can spy on Tevinter elite from within their own estates.
Most npcs would treat you the same either way, since only a few would know you weren't just a slave, so it wouldn't be too resource demanding.

It would be nice to have a variety of racial backgrounds... like choosing which human kingdom you hail from. But that's quite unlikely as they'd simply have to add too many flavor text in game to support it.

One thing and one thing only would bring me to the side of the Dalish elf: the accent. Inquisition's voice pool for the protagonist fell just short of providing a proper option for the Dalish. If the next Dragon Age could have that brogue for the elves, then I'd say Dalish for sure.

I prefer an Ambassadoria dwarf over everything but in this case a City Elf (slave) makes the most sense. Also a City Elf slave is more connected to the Tevinter vs Qunari war.

If possible I'd like the option to choose between Dalish and city elf since I like options in general. But I gotta say being a city elf makes more sense if the next game in Tevinter as it ensures that the player character has some sort of background in actual Tevinter society instead of being an outcast like the Dalish who would likely do thier best to avoid anything related to Tevinter society.

I plan on playing Qunari, but I vote for City Elf. While a City Elf would have made a better choice for the Inquisitor than the Dalish, the Dalish got to have their fun last time, and I feel this is another instance where a City Elf works better again, so City Elf for Dragon Age 4. I do prefer the Dalish though, and will play a Dalish Elf if this next game is not the last Dragon Age.

If all races have the same Origin as a former slave, maybe the writers could provide some flavor text whether you were born City Elf or Dalish. Maybe the Elf PC could have been born Dalish but enslaved as a child, and simply lived longer as a City Elf?

A city elf slave whose master is killed during the beginning of the game would make the most sense, though I also have a hard time seeing someone so unfamiliar with responsibility, conflict or leadership developing into the leader of whatever super special organization Bioware is no doubt cooking up for us to awkwardly head in 4. Maybe a mage elf has a chance to already be someone. I have a feeling that your average Dalish tribe gives Tevinter a wide berth.

Personally, for me? None of the above, I prefer Dwarves, BUT, for those that actually do play elves...I think the choice should be there, so people can play the character they want.

Think about it, an actual roleplaying reason for asking "what is an alienage?" or similar. Is it wrong to picture every Ancient Elf's reaction upon waking up as the original ending to Army of Darkness? "Oh Gods... No! No! I slept too long!"
