so any of you already have idea for the next character? i always love making characters with personality and backgrounds for them, it's probably too early to know what would fit the most, but i can always adjust the part for the gave version. like my first inquisitor was a dalish who left his clan to explore the world for adventures and excitement, he would never be "the inquisitor" but in inquisition my first character was based on him. so for the first game i have two options in mind for the first character i'll play in the first playthrough: 1) rila - a sarcastic female dwarf rogue, who work as an information trader. i will not get into the means in which she acquire the information, since some mystery should be kept what spare money she have (after spending on essentials like... food), she donate to alienages or other groups that could use it.
2) plumeria - a slave/former slave female elven mage. serious at nature, but not without sense of humor. she mastered healing magic, but also practiced elven magic (keeper magic) and basic blood magic. she understands that blood magic is dangerous but believes that every magic is dangerous; fireball and even healing spells are not less dangerous than blood magic, which is why magic in general should be handled with care.
so yeah, haven't decided yet which one i'll use, probably will be easier after we get more info on the setting. what about you? what will be your first character? PS: do feel encouraged to share your opinions on other people's characters as well

No. The first play is always sort of a dry run for me where I learn the story and circumstances. I develop RP based on that experience and will then have my "real" run. It essentially boils down to knowing what the game will allow me to create and change. It's pointless for me to develop something in advance to later find out that the idea is not workable.

I don't want my Inquisitor back – I need some more interesting character and possibilities. The Inquisitor/Inquisition was just too ... lukewarm. Not bad, but not even the best (who is Hawke, ever!)
A gladiator for example, would be nice. Human? Perhaps. An Altus, like Dorian, A Magister's son... etc. We'll see, what's the best. (I'm bad at the early theories.)

Oh, absolutely. Well... I haven't really decided on personalities, but my next two canon protagonists (assuming there will be a DA5) should be a female Qunari and a male dwarf.
I've played two elves and a human (Hawke), so I don't want to be repeating races anymore. But for Tevinter, I don't know which of the two is more adequate. All I know is that it should be a rogue, since the goal is to stop Solas without being discovered by his spies. Not to mention that Tevinter is mage land, so an archer should be well suited for taking them down if needed.

Hmm, still too soon to decide. I only know so far I want my Inquisitor back, which I know is holding by breath, haha. But I will plan on making my new PC very different from my Inquisitor to help me get over her. So male character. Probably human, unless there is a compelling reason to pick another race. All 3 of my canon characters so far are mages so should I break the trend for DA4? If the game takes place in or around Tevinter, playing a mage in that setting might be just too hard to pass up.

I made this mistake with Andromeda. I had planned the characters I wanted to play and obviously ended up disappointed 'cause Ryder's personality is almost entirely set in stone. I don't want to make that mistake again 'cause it's a good way to ruin the game experience for yourself... I have some character ideas in mind but for the very first playthrough I'm just gonna make it up as I go.

I tend to repeat characters across the 3 games. My 2 favourites are the nice, sweet, earnest version of myself who is helpful and religious, and then the sarky, mage disliking, rogue who dislikes authority and says all the things I secretly think irl. I'll go with one of those no doubt, and then hope there's enough depth to think of a third and a fourth.

Can’t see myself playing as an elf if I have to oppose solas
If we are in Tevinter it might well be a human mage
Wouldn’t mind playing a crow assassin (especially if he’s just killed the inquisitors)

I agree with Nightscrawl that it is difficult to know exactly what sort of character I will play until I at least know what classes and specialisms are going to be allowed.
I usually play an elf but I might go with a dwarf this time round, although that would likely mean I would have to play a rogue. If I like the mage options then I might start with an elf mage if the background they give for the race makes sense to me.
Thus far I haven't been that enraptured with the warrior class but that is partly because I haven't really liked the specialism options. I'm hopeful that they may come up with at least one new option seeing as Templar is not a valid option in Tevinter as their Templars are not the same as those in the south. I'm also hopeful they might restore the Spirit Warrior class as I feel this would be appropriate to Tevinter, given how they have no qualms about dabbling with spirits.
I'd also like them to restore the Legionnaire Scout as a dwarf specific rogue class because I found that an interesting bridge between warrior and rogue classes in DAA. I also loved the shadow rogue in both DAA and DA2. If they restore this to the options I will happily play a rogue provided they restore dual wielding to what it was in DA2, rather than the clunky class it was in DAI. If the mechanics are the same as DAI then I would have to opt for being an archer again.
What I really want is for them to restore some of the flexibility we had in DAO. Let warriors be dual wielders if they wish and let dual wielding rogues use something other than daggers provided they are strong enough. Let both classes be able to use a ranged weapon and then swap to melee when the enemy closes on them. Give mages back a bigger range of spell options than simply 3 different elemental and 1 spirit. Let all the classes be able to learn two specialisms and give at least 4 options per class.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only lunatic around here who is already thinking about their characters. So usually i have two guidelines when determining a first playthrough. A. Which gender did i play first in my last RPG. B. My male characters tend to be based on other fictional characters in other ips whereas my females tend to lean more towards being OCs. Now the issue here since we don't know who were going to play so who i intend to play might not match up with the background we are given. With that being said my first character will maybe be: Oliver whatever (since don't know last name). Based on: Oliver Queen aka The Green Arrow by DC Comics/ Arrow. He is an expert with the bow and also an expert martial artist so obviously a rogue (maybe artificier or Assassin) and hopefully bioware gives us the option to switch weapons when at close range or at the least do the DA 2 approach. He is: brooding, has a lot of self doubt, agressive, uses fear and intimidation to get results and is slow to trust others. Even then he is a natural leader and is really intelligent and decisive in the moment... He makes decisions in the middle of a crisis easily and effectively... Then often doubts himself afterwards. For his humor he dosent have much of a sense of one: but i tend to give most of my characters one so when he does it's usually sarcastic, abrasive, and the rare times he does use it it's usually flustered. Ie he does it to make a point or when uncomfortable. So itll be interesting to see if bioware gives us that option.

During my first playthrough, I tend to let my my character's background and personality form as I play. To help with that I do like to have a sizeable amount of meta-knowledge about the game. When I was a kid I used to find it odd that my mom, who loves detective novels, would "cheat" and check the story's ending before starting to read the story from beginning. The funny thing is I tend to do the exact same thing - only with games.
Based on my previous characters from my first playthroughs, I can make a few educated guesses about my 1st DA4 playthrough:
- The character's gender will depend on what I think of the voice actors and what I know about romance options. - I tend to favour mages and rogues because if there's chasing to be done during enemy encounters I'd rather it be spent with them chasing after me. So a mage or a rogue. - Personality-wise inquisiteveness and thirst for knowledge has always ruled all my characters regardless of temperament. There's no droning so mind-breakingly dull I will refuse to listen to it patiently and every conversation option offered will be exhausted. - The character will not be the type to rock the boat: either a moderate in thinking or too scared to speak their mind. *side-eyes my first grey warden* - The character in question will be economical even sometimes bordering on a cheapskate and will spend most of the playthrough in old hand-me-downs, finishing the game with wealth they haven't been able to enjoy. Xena's Joxer will have nothing on them when it comes mismatching outfits. - Regardless of their race they'll end up having a beaky nose and thin lips. Probably also some kind of red hair. - By the end of the game they'll have their own minds and I've become inordinately attached to them whether or not I set out to do so. *side-eyes my Trevelyan*

Well i won't know for sure till i find out what the background/race/class options are.
I was going to make a human mage as my first character in dao, but then i read a description of the city elf origin and the idea a Elven Beserker in a bloodied wedding dress wielding 2 swords captured my imagination.
Since so far my first characters have gone warrior>mage>rogue i suppose I'm due for a warrior again though. If the next time i make a new character it's to fight solas then I'll most likely want to play an elf to beat him up with.
But most engaging background idea wins

If it's possible, my first DA4 character will be a qunari mage. My 'canon' world state so far is human noble archer rogue/warrior Hawke/dwarf dagger rogue so it's really time there was a mage hero in that timeline. I do like the idea of her being a gladiator slave, but who knows what the background(s) will be at this point. Don't have any firm ideas about her personality at this point beyond 'hates the Qun, not much keener on the Vints.'
I guess if qunari are no longer available as a playable race but we still have race selection of some kind, I'll play an elf mage instead. I can't say I'm very enthused by that idea, though.

First character in Origins was a Human Noble Warrior. First character in the second game was a Mage Hawke. First character in Inquisition was a Human Rogue. I guess I'm starting the circle from the start again and rolling a Human Warrior.

Haven't thought much about it but, if we are playing as Inquisitor again, then I'll do so as one of my Solasmancers. I plan to import that world state regardless of who is the PC. If we aren't playing as Inquisitor again, I may go for dwarf simply so I can be someone who doesn't dream and won't be susceptible to Solas that way. My first run will likely be female, unless I end up unable to stand the VA, like in MEA. Then I'll play as male for my first run.
