All the characters are completely one note. "Hi I'm a quirky Asshat", It's the exact opposite problem of what the first Destiny had, where everyone one was way too serious. In a game with a lot of fighting you need some serious dialogue. Not only that but many of the voices didn't seem to fit the characters. I expected better from this company.

I agree. I eventually had to just mute all voiceover volume because I was tired of them yak yak yakking over me trying to play. It's quip-tastic Marvel dialogue cranked up to 83.

Playing through the campaign right now. It's more than I'd like, but there are those who are more serious in their demeanor. That one component store chick is absolutely cringey though.

I think she's meant to be a bit like that. Though I find her more amusing more than cringey. The one NPC I have found to be cringey was the female Freelacer you help out, forget her name. Now her dialogue was pretty cringe worthy.

NPCs are the worst they have been for any bioware game (especially the ambient conversations). The delivery sounds like they are just reading off the page, then both people stop and stare at you like you're the star of the Truman Show.

It was worse in Andromeda but I get you. The dialogue to me feels like two 19 year old middle class girls with degrees in gender studies sat in a Starbucks and decided to try and impersonate 2 working class tradesman bantering with each other.
“Oh my god my dude did you totally see the football last night?”
“Yeah pal, I saw the football pal it was totally amazeballs and stuff”
“Yeah and what about that goal by the Number 7, he really smashed the goal with the ball didn’t he pal? Your team are like totally trash fire and icky”
“No your team are trash fire and icky, I like 100% spilled my beer all over my football jersey because I was so angrymad.”
“Yeah dude, you’re such a asshat now let’s check our white privilege and finish construction on this house so we can go home and beat our wives because we are savages”

While some NPCs are obviously there to be weird or comedic (Amal, Rythe, Sayrna, Matthias), others are dead serious like Layton, the Chronicler, the old survivor and the woman waiting for her daughter. Some, like Mora, Dax's aunt, Jak, Brin, Tassyn, Owen, Haluk and Faye are middle of the road. And that redheaded guy Neeson is supposed to be annoying AF.
Talking to one of them made me tear up, but I won't go further into spoilers.

I'll agree that the some side NPC's are over the top, but that's mainly bioware's style (has been since mass effect and dragon age origins, in case you missed the memo). HOWEVER, the main characters are actually pretty well done (which has also been the case since mass effect and dragon age origins). Doom and gloom is not bioware's thing. They are fantasy heroic comedy - always have been - and you expecting more or less than that is your god-given right, but you're knocking on the wrong door. Personally, I go at the side NPC's tales expecting a light chat, not a full-fledged story (although some surprised me, like the dominion spy (crikey! off to prison with him!), or the mother waiting for her son (right in the feels) . Although some chats were just plain stupid sexy danger... really? Come on... And the solution was to have her work for a smuggler, who for no reason likes you? That was really weird.

The bolded is just great. I haven't played Anthem, but I do have the impression that the serious to humour ratio has changed a bit more towards humour over time in BioWare's games. Dragon Age Origins seemed to be mostly grim with frequent moments of humour to lighten it, while Mass Effect Andromeda seemed mostly comedy with occasional serious moments. Also, I haven't played the game, but is "Sexy Danger" possibly a Pacific Rim reference? In that case I'd actually find that funny, but I'm easily entertained...

Also, I haven't played the game, but is "Sexy Danger" possibly a Pacific Rim reference? In that case I'd actually find that funny, but I'm easily entertained... to your last most likely yes, its way too over the top otherwise, and its not the only homage to pop culture reference that I noticed either as to the comments about the NPC's one thing nobody seems to have noticed is that you have two easy to identify people trying to entice you into a relationship (syrena and lars) and one not so easy (max) and then there is the fact that all 3 of them are basically rip offs of certain characters from the ME universe (conrad, the reporter chick and the mysterious smuggler boss that wants you in bed) and thats just on the face of it, your chances of getting your toon laid are none unless they put that in an expansion later on seriously the whole point of the NPC's is to do something light hearted and fun tying in references to movies books and other games, even haluk has lines that are straight out of a movie.. I suspect if you went through all of the speech options they all do.. and the pacific rim lines and references are all over the place (someone really liked that movie) its pure genius the way they stuck it all together, I liked the LA movie reference as well (not sure thats what they were going for but the story is almost word for word, and it made me tear up at the time I watched in the cinema, not as much as some of the other scenes had me despite the fact it was a fantasy movie some parts were way to true to real situations I had been through) I suspect the sole purpose of the conversations is to advance the storyline in a way thats more interesting that the old space shit games where your flying around move to the "station" look at a database screen with a bunch of tabs and graphic icons and randomly receive bad video messages before you "launch" and go shoot stuff in your space ship.... its interative and you can move around, the fact it also changes as you progress through the game just makes it even better (and its a more fun progression system than being zone blocked until you reach a certain level or do a certain quest)

Well... I haven't played Anthem yet, nor do I think I ever will, since my laptop would hardly classify as current-gen even in 2014. But I am curious about the NPC conversations, and if anyone can tell me if there are youtube videos with the all the NPC convos (and link them if they do exist), I'd appreciate it.

I did try searching before, and came up empty-handed both times. This is a nice start, though. I'll be giving my two cents after I've looked through every character's convos. Seeing as Neeson is seemingly the only one with all convos up there, perhaps I'll start with him.

Not simple to capture them all, as the answers you give change the outcome as in any RPG. And you can't go back and choose differently. I'd say some of the Tarsis conversations are a highlight of the game.

I think they are overall fun and interesting, the deeper you get into them. There are a few duds that don't grab me, but that's normal for me. The emails you get from various NPCs also help to flesh them out a little better, so if you aren't taking the time to read through those, you might miss out a little.
Bioware has gotten progressively more...quippy with their banter/writing, that does feel sort of Marvel like, true. I just figured it was because they are mostly aiming for a younger audience demographic now, which I guess I fall out of. The game is rated Teen (I think?), so I wasn't expecting to see anything too dark or gritty around town. The NPC interactions are mostly there to add interest and to flesh out the world and lore, IMO. I also feel like some of the humor is going for intentional camp or satire at times. Like lines sort of poking light fun at some of the romantic subplots and tropes Bioware is known for.

If the only reason (or the biggest one) the dialogue feels quippier in Anthem is because it's T for Teen, then I can let it slide, as long as they steer clear of it in any future M-rated game. As much as I love the MCU, I'll never forgive it for making quippy shit more prevalent in fiction. Or at least in the fiction that I consume.
