I've gotten them harvesting before. But I killed a Scar Boss in Freeplay and it dropped 25 Masterwork Embers. Wasn't even a world event. I just found the scorpion looking boss in a random area with some trash scar mobs.
This was the first time I've seen it. I'm wondering if it's a bug, or other people have been seeing them drop as well.

Shhhh, don't let BW know. It's been happening from time to time. I swear even a plant gave me a 25 MW ember message and they were added to inventory. Otherwise MW embers are regular drop and you get more with Harvesting bonus on gear. People even create Harvest bonus gear sets. The stat is as precious atm as weapon damage. |

Are you sure the embers actually dropped from the boss? I ask because it is possible you completed a challenge by killing said boss that rewards 25 MW embers (some of the weekly/monthly challenges will reward MW embers). If the latter, you would see it in the loot feed on the right side of the screen but you wouldn't actually see the physical embers pop out of the boss.

Yes MW Embers do drop in Freeplay, & with a harvest set bonus of 300% you can get 4 from a pick up. For some strange spaghetti code reason the weapon "Elemental Rage" allows you to pick up 1 extra ember for 5 on a 300% harvest bonus, & if you have 2 of Elemental Rages on for +2 embers for a spicy 6 ember pick up (until bioverpls patches it).

my best haul was from a chest that gave me 15 masterwork embers during freeplay didnt give me any masterworks though …
actually on that note, can you get masterwork gear before you complete the campaign ? I hit lvl 30 having messed with each javelin in freeplay after getting to the find a friend mission before starting it I completed the freeplay gain access to the various tombs so when I got that quest it auto completed and opened up the mission for the generals tomb...
should have been spamming quick launch missions though since thats how I managed to complete the freelancer tier 3, on the plus side it was the last of the 3 factions for me to finish thanks to all the embers and freeplay world events, now I have a few random bits to finish (like vassa's challenge and the final piece for the dominion intel)
