Anthem – Post Launch Updateblog.bioware.com/2019/03/19/anthem-post-launch-update/by Author - Casey Hudson Posted on - March 19, 2019 General Manager of BioWare Whew. How’s everyone doing out there? It’s been a wild ride these last few weeks. On the one hand it’s been a rougher launch than expected. But then as I think back we also knew that big new online games tend to hit some kind of problem once they go live, so as much as we tested and prepared to make sure everything was ready, we were also ready for the possibility that unexpected issues might arise at launch. And we continue to be committed to responding to them. We launched a game that so many of you tell us is really fun at its core, but we also had a degree of issues that did not reveal themselves until we were operating at the scale of millions of players. We were of course very disappointed about that, as were many of you. I’ve been in there playing with you since those early days (I’m a Ranger in Edmonton Oilers colors!) and it makes me sad to hear about any issues that would hold someone back from fully enjoying the game. I take that very personally, and it’s been our top priority to get improvements out to you in the fastest, safest way. Combat Balance Meeting in AustinIn these first few weeks, our Live team has worked hard on that, delivering over 200 improvements through patches and live updates, across stability, loot and progression, customization, and more. We also continue to listen to your feedback, with more improvements to endgame loot and progression, game flow, and stability and performance coming soon – so there’s a lot more work that we intend to do. This is all a learning experience for us, and as we work to make sure the game is improved and perfected, we can’t emphasize enough how much we appreciate you staying with us. Especially because the next stage is where things really get exciting. The Story is Just BeginningAs we move through this most difficult period of launching a new game and IP, we are also working on the things that will really show what Anthem is capable of – a series of world events, new story content, and new features, that all build towards the Cataclysm later this spring. But we understand there is skepticism out there. We hear the criticisms and doubts. But we’ll keep going anyway, working hard every day on Anthem – an ever-changing world, constantly improving and growing, and supported well into the future by our team of passionate developers. With Anthem we’re trying something a little different than we’ve done before. And likewise our upcoming games will be different from Anthem. But with everything we do, we focus on staying true to our mission, creating worlds that inspire you to become the hero of your own story. So what’s most important to us is you, the players who have supported us in this journey. And we’re excited to prove that with Anthem, the best is yet to come. Casey

"We launched a game that so many of you tell us is really fun at its core, but we also had a degree of issues that did not reveal themselves until we were operating at the scale of millions of players."
Almost stopped reading there. These are not issues of scale, these are fundamental design issues that should have been readily apparent to anyone who has even glanced at previous loot games.
This post smacks of the Andromeda blog post that was released shortly after launch. I seriously doubt this game is going to improve materially.

I don’t get all the pessimism. There may be some issues in the endgame and maybe they should have seen them coming but they are fixing them. Things like the connection problems and loading problems and Quickplay problems could easily be issues never encountered outside of a sizeable live user environment.
In any case I see no reason to doubt that they want to fix the issues and plan to fix them and will fix them. Why would they not? How would it serve them not to fix them?
In the meantime I’m enjoying the game, experiencing the story again with different choices and looking forward to more and continuous story updates. I’m still finding useful loot and growing more powerful. If I want a challenge I can play higher difficulties and if I want to dominate I can play lower difficulties. That’s going to be the same no matter what loot I get from this point on and the rarity of finding legendaries just makes it all the more sweet when I do.

I can see something like Quickplay surfacing after the game went live.
But if he's been playing the game all along he can't possibly like logging in, loading into the forge, loading back into the fort, loading into the mission, loading into a cave, loading in a rewards screen, loading back to the fort and/or the forge.
He had to see the repetitiveness and the general lack of creativity in the mission design.
The extreme enemy scaling between difficulty levels. That rewards are not proportional to the amount of work required to accomplish some tasks.
The fact that the game doesn't explain hardly anything to you, or the fact that it's hard to customize your character stats when you can't see them.
There are core design issues with this game that you could have seen playing solo.

People have spent upwards to 80 bucks for this game. The game suffered horrendous bugs day one of release. After each subsequent patch the game seems to introduce more bugs. People who play the game up to six hours daily can barely get their hands on one legendary item. loot drops are broken, some gear items are broken, and there is always more bad news. I can definitely see why people are pessimistic. It's great that you are enjoying the game but other people who have bought the game as well aren't, and their complaints, concerns, and "pessimism" is perfectly valid.

People get mad when there's issues (understandable), but then they get mad when they're fixed, they get mad at acknowledged mistakes, get mad at upcoming changes, and then find something else that makes them mad. Those same people will demand its changed right away or theyll stop playing for the 20th time or claim to just not buy the game now "for sure" even though they never were. If people complain this much endlessly online I'd hate to see them in real life.

People need scapegoats to blame whenever something goes wrong and currently that game is Anthem. That's not to say the criticisms are warranted as there are many that at least Bioware is aware of. But you think that Anthem is the worst game of all time if you read the comments.

"And likewise our upcoming games will be different from Anthem."
Already responding to the concern DA4 will be another live service shitshow like Anthem. Hilarious. That does not make me feel any better, Casey.

I always just shake my head when people say that the criticism is unfair and then go on to say 'yeah the games has a lot of issues, it has some flaws but people are overreacting.' Are they?
Like I've said before, software is the only industry where someone can sell you something for full price that has a lot of issues, or is half functional. Then promise you they'll fix it, and get praised for eventually bringing the product up the standard it should have been when people purchased it.
If someone bought a new car that had to keep being taken to the shop right away, and the dealership said we're aware they're issues, we'll fix your car up and have you on the road in the near future, people would be f'ing livid.

I don’t get all the pessimism. This is BSN...welcome Ah, a trait unique to the BSN I see. That's cool, I'll just head over to Resetera (the biggest hug box on the internet) and bathe in optimism and positivity: - This says...nothing.
- This is...pretty much nothing.
- i think the whole "toxicity makes devs not want to interact with the community" is BS. Yes, there is a LOAD of toxicity that is absolutely disgusting, but when you mess up this bad, a community manager should be on the frontlines, NOT the devs.
- Is it up to the B-team to fix this now as the core devs focus on future titles? Genuinely curious.
- Yeah okay we didn’t get anything out of this thanks BioWare
- Why bother with such a meangless statement?
- lmao, it’s literally nothing
www.resetera.com/threads/anthem-%E2%80%93-post-launch-update.106275/Okay, that didn't go as planned. Maybe Reddit, the biggest Anthem community and the one which interacts most with the devs, can lead the way to a more optimistic future. I'm EXCITED, let's go: - They needed millions of players to tell them how severely lacking/flawed/disappointing loot is. I honestly don't see the future for this game going all that well if they were THAT ignorant on very basic loot mechanics.
- I'm more surprised that they needed millions of players players to tell them that locking the gear loadout screen behind a loading screen was about the worst thing you can do in a game of this type.
- “Let’s learn to make a game we don’t know how to make and charge people for it”
- This is what happens when you take the MMORPG instance genre(which is basically this genre. Go look at Dragon Nest go, look at any other Instance base MMORPG or "looter shooter" is what the FPS version wants to be called.") and don't even follow it.
- Basically says, "you're paying to be our beta testers lol"
- "Tested and prepared" I stopped reading right there.. thats why players are still beta testers for this game.. lol.
- This game had problems that were absolutely apparent to you and your team before launch and you launched it anyways. There's no way a development team could have been ignorant to these problems, and to say that these were "unexpected issues" or that they didn't reveal themselves until it hit large scale is incredibly dishonest.
www.reddit.com/r/AnthemTheGame/comments/b2ykhk/anthem_post_launch_update/Huh ... maybe this isn't a BSN issue.
