PCGamer: Anthem's original story sounded amazingwww.pcgamer.com/anthems-original-story-sounded-amazing-and-much-more-interesting/?utm_content=buffer20c58&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter&utm_campaign=buffer-pcgamertwAs revealed in The Art of Anthem, the game’s premise was very different once upon a time. Early drafts featured a colony ship from Earth that had crash-landed in what was essentially the ‘Bermuda Triangle’ of space. “Survivors would have to settle, survive, and somehow thrive on a harsh and dangerous world,” writes the game’s Art Director, Derek Watts. “These ships were only in that first iteration. We took this quite far along before we switched to what Anthem would eventually become.”
What followed was a Robinson Crusoe-style struggle against the odds as your crew salvaged modules into houses, ramshackle bars, and outposts. An entire settlement is seen to have sprung up around the carcass of this ship in later concept art, and its citizens are dressed in what’s left of old Earth clothing.
That’s where your mech comes in. “At this point javelins were utilitarian suits for space travel that then had to be repurposed for battle on a dangerous world,” Watts says. Designed for use in the cold dark of space or manual labor, they were retrofitted for combat out of necessity. There seems to have been the possibility of upgrading your suit with scavenged ship parts, too. Watts says that “in the crash landing version of the game, what could you salvage from your ship to build your own suits? Here, we were exploring how much the pilot would be exposed. Would these suits be like tanks, or would you actually see the pilot?”
You wouldn’t be the only ones who’d crash-landed on this planet, either: one painting depicts human survivors watching as a new ship tumbles to the ground, and it stands to reason that others would have arrived before you. Possible conflicts come into focus as a result: not only would you have to stake your claim on a world where you don’t belong, you might also have been pitted against aliens carving out their own kingdom, which perhaps takes it a little closer to the premise of Mass Effect Andromeda. There’d still be room for long-form mystery in the Anthem of Creation nonetheless. Perhaps Anthem’s Shaper mythology could remain intact as well, resulting in a storyline you’d uncover as you travelled.

Whilst I think where the story ended up is much preferable, I find it interesting to see how close the original themes were to Andromeda.

It says later on that they had to adjust the game to be more "in depth" and "flexible" than that. Okay, so much for depth and flexibility.

Even the original trailer for Anthem teases an ultimately more interesting story. Also made the Monitor seem like someone wanting to achive a greater good at the cost of silly things like moral scruples. Honestly is a little sad how one note The Monitor is.

This seems so much more interesting and motivating that what Anthem ended up with. What DID Anthem actually end up with? We have a human empire across multiple planets and settlements on the continent of Mirrus, that sprung up against an alien force known as the Urgoth that subjugated them before Helena Tarsis. I mean, people were paying attention to the lore right? That description is interesting, but I have a feeling it would be a similar storyline as the current storyline in-game. that all said, it's also basically Andromeda 2.0 minus sunnier outlook. it was probably wise to change it.

This is essentially the same premise as Xenoblade Chronicles X, which worked extremely well. Anthem really would have benefited from a more down-to-earth plot, and this would have helped drive home that survival is really at stake. Such a shame.

I think you need the whole Shaper / power of the Anthem idea so that you can justify changes to the environment or enemies etc. We are going to want constant change to keep things interesting as time goes by and the existence of a force which can warp reality at any moment gives them the perfect way to accommodate that.

What DID Anthem actually end up with? ... I mean, people were paying attention to the lore right? ... The multiple planets is news to me. I wouldn't have minded having been given more lore context with release. I'm pretty much like: There is planet, humans somehow are there, artifacts of some precursors run wild, aliens are there, too. Why and how - I have no idea.

Personally, why and how is unreliable for world building, especially considering how BioWare purposefully changes their lore to suit new ideas and misconceptions into their narratives. The implications of it all seems to be a human empire with a faction (Dominion) challenging it now. The details we likely will see will be what we fill in or experience, like the path of the legion of dawn which honestly was well done in game.

I outright assume Thedas is alternative universe in DA. But in things SciFi-ish I'd like to know some sort of setting. It nagged me with Dune, too until I got in deeper.

I love the "struggle to survive" theme, I love the atmosphere it generates most of all, it's why I loved Telltale's "The Walking Dead". But it has to be done right. Unfortunately in games it's often done very poorly.

So it's now officially confirmed that they made two games out of one idea, right? I knew it! This original idea is basically Andromeda's plot! Or rather, what Andromeda SHOULD have been. So they took a good idea and fucked it up twice in a row, lol. Seems to me that when Andromeda was completely lost after a failed procedural idea and a cry for help went out to Edmonton they decided to dig up their original concept for Anthem that I assume to ditched because of EA pressure and adepeted it for the Mass Effect universe. Man, this brings back so much disappointment over the execution of Andromeda... I already wanted to play that dire survival story when Andromeda was released! Instead we got "lol, speed bump" boy scouts in space. As a stand alone game we could have had a scenario where your choices lead to everyone dying. Shipwrecked is just prefect for a story about consequences. They did NOTHING with that idea. Nothing!
Gosh, this is pissing me off all over again...
EDIT: Also, the shaper storms and the scourge... the Jardaan who have the power to terraform. Plus the gameplay is extremely similar in both games. Many reused and adepted assets. Jetpacks became full on flying. This is all one big clusterfuck of ideas and gameplay elements spread between two games!

Not in a "we just crash landed here and need to figure out how to survive" sort of way. There is some civilization already, and humans have established settlements, cities, rulers, and factions. The world outside is chaotic and dangerous but they aren't in immediate danger inside the settlement walls. I'm glad as well, it makes things more interesting to have some established civilization to set the story in.

Meh. I think this story would have been more suited for a SP game.
Also, I don't know if I would have even kept playing Anthem initially if hadn't been in a javelin flying around from the very start.

Let's see...Fallout 4 and 76, Andromeda, Horizon Zero Dawn, Days Gone, Farcry New Dawn, The Division, Metro, Frostpunk, No Man's Sky...nevermind the plethora of other "struggle to survive" games that aren't Sci Fi, like The Forest, State of Decay 2, Conan Exiles, Subnaudica, ARC, etc etc. Just me personally, but thank god that didn't happen, because I've had it with that concept, for a good long while.
