Retailer don't buy games. My wife worked as a merchandiser. Companies ship stock. Stock is displayed and sold. After some time, unsold stock is returned to the companie/supplier.... this included physical copies of games DVDs... etc.
Therefore be wary when "sold" really means "shipped". My wife constantly (and other merchandizers) complained about Disney (as an example) over shipping stock that never could be sold. Although, at times, buyers from a merch company would be at fault when they issued to Disney "send me" x units of product y. Since merch companies want to continue holding a merchandizing contract with a publisher/supplier they can attempt to oversell to show them "see I move N units/mo see how good I am?".
Just saying....
Games are sold to retailers at a discount, this is called "sell-in" commonly termed shipped but can also be called sold. At this point these products are listed in the financial records of companies as "revenue booked" - they consider them pretty much sold. These games are marked up by retailers and sold to the customer, this is called "sell-through". sometimes unsold product can be sent back for a refund or maybe an exchange, usually deals made with larger retailers with more clout, sometimes there is no deal in place and retailers have to slash prices to $5 to move the damn things, smaller or independent retailers have little bargaining clout. EDIT: Retailers are billed when the product is shipped, payment is usually expected soon after, retailers keep all the sell-through money. I believe that's usually how these things go. Is not consistent in all markets. Vegetables are sold through but beverages here aren't. Might even be different depending on a retailers turnover rate simply to streamline billing / finance.

I wonder how the initial sales compare to the 6 million in the first two weeks projections they stated. When and where did they state that?
I can go try and find it. They said it on an earnings call. I'm not sure about the two weeks now that I think about it, it may have been first month. But it was definitely six million copies in the beginning.

having trouble finding the original source, but media outlets consistently report six weeks/end of march.

Thanks, thought I was going crazy. So basically 5-6 million in 37 days if the game came out Feb 22nd. Wonder how close they'll get.

Indeed? With 1K vs 100K and 200K EA is still looking at the long view? It's a game with a roadmap of many years, how else are they going to look at it but in the long term? Interesting how every game not scoring consistently more than 100-200k on twitch now is a failure. Or does this only apply to Anthem? 😉

Well, you know, if the current Road map fails it's "goal", it then may take many years to release what was promised in it. A skeleton crew can only work that fast.

12 days from the end of EA's Q4 2018, a month after release, almost a week in Division 2's launch week, and the only places I can find discounts on "Anthem" are physical copies on Amazon and physical PS4 copies at Walmart.
There is no panic so it obviously matches up with earlier reports with how it sold (almost all physical copies of "Anthem" - 93% - were sold in Japan its launch week, Top PS4 digital game on the PSN for the month of Feb in only 7 days, etc). Add in Origin PC sales and money made through EA Access and EA Access Premier and I'm sure EA is liking what they are seeing.
Wonder if we start seeing more discounts as we get near the last week of Q4 to try to push the unit sales up (if they haven't hit their goal already) or, with both Apex Legends and Anthem doing well for the quarter, if it's even a focal point anymore for their investor call. With "ME:A", they were predicting lifetime sales between 5-10 million units but never mentioned what it sold, only that they were pleased with its overall performance and player engagement so they might just discuss the revenue generated for the quarter.

Well to be fair. Neither ME1 or ME2 launched on all platforms simultaneously, so Andromeda kinda got 2nd best launch in the series by default.

As for sales, while "ME:A" likely sold well, I don't remember the entire physical copy supply almost selling out in Japan it's launch week or it being a #1 seller digitally on PSN for an entire month from only 7 days worth of sales...and certainly "ME:A" was discounted sooner. Man, it's like the comparisons are flimsy at best

People are underestimating the appeal for Anthem in Japan right now.
And it is important to point out it's uncommon for a western game to surge like that.
So that is definitly something that is an X factor to worldwide sales and longevity.

The only difference is that Anthem is online only and has MTX, which means it has a higher chance of staying alive than MEA. But considering the state of the game it's not unrealistic that BW might get downsized again if they won't hit EA's expactation of 5-6 million copies sold by the end of March(Q4 2019) with the possibility of Anthem not getting new content or even shutting down, many online games have shutdown in the past.

Correct me if I am wrong (no, really, please do) but my understanding is CDKeys is not an authorized reseller themselves, essentially "gray market" so I'd imagine they'd be able to sell it cheaper depending on the cost to acquire the game keys.
