I wasn't aware that the elves actually sacked Val Royeaux and robbed Drakon's tomb. I think there are two versions of the war and the one I remember has their army getting as far as the walls of Val Royeaux but then their main general being killed and their army retreating as a result. I'm surprised that they didn't make recovering the Drakon's lost artefacts a quest in DAI.

I got the part about Drakon’s tomb from a DAI item description: dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Shield_of_the_EmperorA quick search of the Dales entry on the wiki indicates that the elven forces commander was killed during the liberation of Val Royeaux according to another item: dragonage.fandom.com/wiki/Bane_of_Red_Crossing

I didn't buy too many items from the merchants so that must have been why I missed out on this bit of lore. It makes you think really just how bad ass the elven army was. Less than 300 years after the founding of the Dales they are strong enough to take on the Orlesian Empire and conquer their capital but didn't know how to hold on to their gains. It is a pity really that they didn't just stick with defending their own borders rather than stretching their resources further afield and antagonising the enemy in such a humiliating way. Knowing the Orlesian psyche they would never have allowed that to go unpunished. Still it explains why the Orlesians continued to be fearful of what the Dalish might be capable of if they ever united as a major force against them, plus why they took the city elves into exile rather than simply ruling over them.

Another interesting episode! Regarding the Drakon name of the river and fort in Ferelden, it occurs to me that it could just be an archaic word for 'Dragon', much like the ancient Greek roots of the word in our own world.
