www.polygon.com/2019/4/10/18304440/anthem-combat-game-design-animationWhy the combat in Anthem feels so damn goodA game designer digs into Anthem’s best parts By Jennifer Scheurle I’m curled up in my chair at home. The Forge, the location where I can upgrade and admire my combat suits, called Javelins, is on my screen. I’m looking at my own Javelin, in fact, in all its glory. It’s love at first sight.
I’m a game designer of more than seven years with a deep and thorough love for space games. I’ve worked on games in collaboration with NASA and released the game Objects in Space recently, which is a hardcore space trading sim. In short: I am familiar with many of the challenges that come with sci-fi and space games.
And Anthem has struck a chord with me.
Anthem has received a lot of criticism since its launch, and I agree with many of the issues that others have pointed out. What the game does right overshadows what it does wrong, however, and my enjoyment and love for the game’s polished and unique core continues. If BioWare’s goal was to deliver high fidelity air combat using mech suits, they have definitely delivered on that goal...

Hm... There are always people that are capable of enjoying parts of a game and ignoring the not so good parts. Same with me. I enjoy DA2 and not so much the Carta goons descending from the sky or the reused dungeon assets. There are also people here that don't like DA2 but like Anthem.
Both views have merit, imo.

This is the balance scale for each person who has played the game. Some people will agree with this, some will not. I did not.

The combat in Anthem is pretty lackluster after awhile, in fact it gets pretty damned boring. One of the reasons it, along with Origin got uninstalled.

She doesn't really go in depth, on analysis. Kudos to sound designers and animators: they did an excellent job here. Javelins feel heavy And responsive at the same time. But that's where the positives end. The game doesn't utilize it's movement ( during combat) in a clever way ( different skill ceilings/risk/reward ratio..in comparison, with other "mobile" action games, like Vanquish) Enemy ( visual design), AI and encounter design are awful. "Readability" is worst I've seen in any shooter: excessive visual effects ( I've heard someone mention, you need to play while wearing sunglasses), couple this with enemies spawning out of thin air And giving no sound indication on their position/actions..you'll die constantly while having no idea what/from what direction killed you. And boss battles are nothing compared to games like Monster Hunter: too simple AI, few attacks, ADS+hitpoint sponges. Add to this non factor level design: there is nothing more to Anthem's combat than good movement/control+spam awesome button. I still stand it has weaker combat than Mass Effect. Hell, even than the first had it's moments( GO!GO!GO! I WILL DESTROY YOU!)

Hell, even than the first had it's moments( GO!GO!GO! I WILL DESTROY YOU!) Doesn't utilize the movement? Are you getting that from like skillups "review" where he dazzled us with his uuh "skill"? Because it clearly isn't from playing Temple of Scar. Wearing sunglasses? Wtf? And if you are having trouble picking up the audio and visual cues from the warp gate, well, the problem isn't the game. And if you die constantly my guess is, it's because your convinced there is no reward for keeping mobile. Boss battles? Ok, there are always better ones. How many attacks does a boss have to have for not be called having to few? Non factor level design? What does it even mean? There are so many different types of levels in the game and they all factor in the game. Some open , some enclosed, some give plenty of cover others not so much. Horizontal, vertical, and so on, but I guess if you spam Tyrant mine over and over it might seem like diversity is coming short. Not that the Tyrant mine is bad or boring, I love it but it is the tutorial stronghold.

In no substantial way, no. In comparison to how something like Vanquish handles movement, shooting and energy/stamina, Anthem is incredibly shallow. re you getting that from like skillups "review" where he dazzled us with his uuh "skill"? Because it clearly isn't from playing Temple of Scar There is no great "skill" required for Anthem. Entire "difficulty" comes from mobs that receive ludicrous stat increases on higher difficulties. Enemies, encounter and level design are atrocius. Visually/Audio game becomes completely incomprehensible, especially with Storm. Result is gameplay never develops satisfying, precise identify/hit loop like in most power/shooters. ( Inquisition had a similar problem, but it's even worse here). In Mass Effect you had a lot of enemies, plus player/party abilities on screen, but you had a pretty clear comprehension on what is going on, in every situation. This turns the game into mindless move/spam combos repetitive loop.
