Woss action RPG? Is when you use skills that dont necessarily resolve with a dice-roll. Aim a headshot, score a headshot. Whatyouseeiswhatyouget. Block enemy attack at right time with mouseclick, not dice roll - dat action RPG in contrast to "normal" RPG When the action-RPG elements make up the core experience of the game. So people go back and forth whether it has "RPG elements" or whether it's an "RPG" based on how central those elements are. Anyway I pointed out the issue with loot because the way the community seems to define RPG, I'm not entirely convinced that a looter shooter couldn't also be an ARPG. The idea of character progression through choice scrubs out a lot of games the community believes are RPGs. And that includes Diablo 3 because they watered down the progression through choice elements substantially. D3 removed attribute point allocation, it removed skill point allocation, it's a shell of Diablo 1 and 2 choice wise. The way the community defines RPG seems to be character evolution + combat system, that's pretty much all. Wow, they kinda neutered D3 it seems. How does the character evolve, then? Skill picks?

Skill picks? You wish. IIRC you get every skill and you choose which ones you put on your bar xD You can swap skills on your bar at any time Attributes are allocated automatically Every character of a class is practically the same xD … except for their loot

Now I don't want to anymore.

I personally think RPG is too broad a brush these days, its a holdover from the past when the choices were limited ie: puzzle game, platformer, RPG, MUD etc. I kind of think a game genre should be defined as if you have a gun to your head, an espionage operative is about to jump into a game to meet someone and you have 5 seconds to tell them in as few words as possible what kind of game it is so they can play it convincingly, I would have to say its an Online Looter Shooter like Destiny, they would say "ahhhh, I know how to play it now". Saying it has "RPG elements" is basically saying almost every game has RPG elements, Tomb Raider isn't an RPG in my mind, but it has "RPG elements" if you want to get finicky about it, but what good would telling someone that do, none imo. These days narrative and some sort of skill tree for characters is pretty much par for the course.
To me if someone told me a game is an RPG I would be expecting something like FF, Phantasy Star, Chrono Trigger or Ultima etc (all on console sorry I was late to PC, did play on friends PC's though), if you told me Anthem was an RPG I would call you a liar, telling me Anthem had RPG elements would just be confusing, it wouldn't help anyone understand what the game is imo. I honestly think its the term "RPG" that has lost its meaning, but I get that people like to feel puffed up and important by arguing about genres like Death, Thrash, Gothic, Nu, Power, Viking are apparently all genres of Heavy Metal, its all Heavy Metal to me and the genres don't mean anything as long as it feels good on my ears. What kind of game is Anthem, its a fun game, for the most part anyway, ignore the loot problems hopefully they will fix that soon, try it and see for your self and make up your own mind.

Anthem is simply a shooter. You need loot to be a looter-shooter. The loot chase in Anthem is non-existent. So Anthem is a third-person shooter devoid of any deep RPG mechanics, character choice and the story is pretty terrible with the most empty open-world that gaming has seen in years.
Also, it is terribly boring to play.

I would say it’s a looter shooter with some RPG elements.

I think Anthem wanted to be a looter shooter with RPG elements but I like it best when I treat it as a singleplayer RPG (mostly because I don't care about loot) with a tacked on multiplayer. Some of the conversations in Fort Tarsis rival anything in DA or ME. I'm hoping to get more content like Layton, Marl, Jarek and Marelda's conversations.
Marelda & Jarek (SPOILERS)
You can see the conversation is affecting the player because of the long pauses to weigh each dialogue choice. This is something I've been missing recently. I really felt like I needed to pay attention to Marelda and Layton's conversations because otherwise I could cause them harm.
