BSNers, I need some wisdom. I am getting beaten down by the Culinary industry, I need to get out before it kills me. I just turned 40 in February & being on my feet 50 hours a week is getting to me I want to start a 2nd career as a teacher, History or Art. My sort-of GF claims it's not difficult to get your foot in the door & begin some aid programs while working on your degree (I don't have my Bachelor's yet) Or should I say to hell w it & just go in a different direction? Is it worth the trouble? I know in general educators get paid pretty crap

If you got what it takes to talk to kids who mostly aren't interested in what you want to tell them, can be disruptive little shits and all that. If you don't mind doing a fair amount of work after hours. If you don't mind literally anyone you meet thinking they know better how to do your job than you do...
Who am I shitting, it's still one of the best fucking things you can do for a living. I know I'd go for it in a heartbeat. Not just a job.

Depends how much you want to commit hours wise too as well. Obviously schools are around 9-3.30pm or a variance here and there on it as such. My mum who was a teacher until a couple of years ago would still be working up until 7pm at nights sometimes. Plus obviously earlier than classes starting with preparing the room / setting up for lessons. All this said and done, she really put in a lot of effort into her job, but there are also those too as well who don't go to that extent that she did.

Seven's right. You need a special mindset to do this, but if you have that mindset... It's paid ok, the hours you actually work are great (the after hours work you can work while watching a movie or something, if you can do work and whatever at the same time) and there's the holidays.
Plus also around here teachers get a severe discount for the school lunches, so hot chow every day you're at work and you don't have to cook it (and you can potentially chat with the cooks about their work since you have the experience)...
A lot of pluses, and as you might gather, the minuses are largely non-factor for me personally. You gotta ask yourself one question: Do I have what I need to do this?

I think it depends at least somewhat on where you live. Main considerations would be whether there is a shortage of teachers, or if the local school board is making cutbacks.
It might not be a bad idea to hit up newer teachers in your area for their thoughts about what entering the career in the current climate has been like.

Are so so fed up with the cooking industry that you want no part of it or do you just not want to be part of the high pressure long hours chef part?
Is there another career in the industry that you could look that is not front line kind of thing?

idk maybe you should try being a private educator. Some people would still want to see a license but mostly it's a results-based job, either your students really learn something (and you'll get more students then) or they don't (and you'll get kicked out of this job).

well if you have the money for the training and the temperament for it then sure why not, me I'd rather work in some other field like waste disposal, plumbing or electrics, but then I know I dont have the temperament to not demand obedience and lash out when I dont get it... so I'd be a really shitty teacher...
that and of course its way easier to become a tradesman or work retail than it is to qualify as a teacher in a separate field to the one in which you spent many years of employment, and aside from no longer wanting to do the job why not look for employment at schools for the catering classes ? just because your bored of being a caterer doesnt mean you have to chuck away decade + of experience when moving to a new line of work /
