I can't wait to get off from work, today. Perhaps I will encounter someone that will provide me with surprise intercourse (rape) or a surprise financial withdrawal (mugging). Thankfully, I can always come across my surprise substance provider (drug dealer) or my surprise fun time proprietor (prostitute). Lastly, I can go home and play the latest EA title I acquired through surprise discount mechanics (piracy). And all of these are fun and ethical.

The thing is when this whole thing started I figured they would figure a way around the different issues and it looks like they have otherwise they would have pulled a Squarenix and created a game where they are going to make it episodic with no plans on how many episodes its going to be and charge full price for each episode. As long as they can get their systems back into the games they aren't going to care what anyone says on the subject.

The UK parliament politicians seemed to tear well into the representing individuals. It was kinda fun to watch them squirm.
I suppose Holland and Belgium might have had some manner of success in the EU. I know the UK voted to get out of the EU, but as far as I am aware, they are not out yet and probably still attends EU meetings and what not.
I don't really care if the politicians decides to involved at this point. A lot of people have warned the big game corps for years now, for several years. They should have listened.
They took it too far, and they continued to try and take it further and now they are dealing with the consequences of it.
I hope politicians ends up doing something, because I can only imagine that if they don't the big game corps will take that as encouragement and go all out.

I don't like to bash EA too much because it's become fashionable these days, but this...this is really a new low for them. Surprise mechanics my ass. It's a form of gambling at best and a plague on game design in general. To see them double down on this is disheartening.

Playing devil’s advocate:
What differentiates loot boxes from, say, buying a pack of trading cards? The contents are randomized and you don’t know what you’re gonna get, yet we don’t generally call the latter gambling.

The contents are randomized and you don’t know what you’re gonna get, yet we don’t generally call the latter gambling. Speaking as someone who has dabbled in Magic: The Gathering from time to time, a couple of differences come to mind.
First, trading cards that you don't need still have potential value to someone else and can be traded or sold. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there is a game out there with microtransactions where you can share the spoils from the lootboxes you open.
Second, games with lootboxes are generally structured to accommodate those microtransactions. Although Wizards of the Coast would dearly love you to buy booster packs, the game isn't built around the idea that you MUST buy those packs to remain competitive; in fact, you can just buy a theme deck and go to to town.

Playing devil’s advocate: What differentiates loot boxes from, say, buying a pack of trading cards? The contents are randomized and you don’t know what you’re gonna get, yet we don’t generally call the latter gambling. Playing devil's advocate. Like EA comparing lootboxes to Kinder Eggs? At the end of the day, I do not think it is so much the concept but the effect that it ends up having. We clearly see that lootboxes are having an effect much similar to what we know legally as gambling. Trading card packs have the advantage of you being given a physical product that you can trade and sell off. The percentages of getting the cards you want is also much higher I believe, which makes it very much unlike what we know legally as gambling. A big difference is, though, that the lootboxes we see in games have a structural composition similar to that of gambling we see in casinos, and that creates a gambling addiction. Lootboxes and microtransactions are also just an overall plague on the industry. The game corps no longer have to compete with quality games to earn money, all they have to do is release a shitty, undercooked product on which they have saved tons of money despite what they like to falsely report, and then just throw in some microtransactions and lootboxes and let the whales earn them cash. Creating and releasing video games have become cheaper over the years, not more expensive despite what the game corps try to claim. Lootboxes and microtransactions are not needed for economic growth, indie titles have proven this much. So it is bullshit that is being spit out, and the shills are eating it up raw.

The contents are randomized and you don’t know what you’re gonna get, yet we don’t generally call the latter gambling. We poked this can of worms one to many times. To add to the existing responses, it's digital. We don't know the chances of getting something, what that something is gonna be even in many cases. And they can change those chances on a whim whenever they see fit for whichever reason they want. Let's use logic here. Why do we think EA and the other usual suspects are fighting so hard to keep this "mechanic" in their games? Is it because the players like it and buy their games because of it? or is it perhaps because it makes them billions every year in revenue?
