I saw something earlier that I've to add in this bit.
Why fishing? I don't get the "craze" about fishing in games. I get bored when streamers do this. Worse when they talk the balancing act (answering questions regards other games, etc) to viewers during fishing which sometimes seems to be just tapping a few keys repeatedly. They can do this for an hour and it's the worst thing to happen. The moment they start I look at something else and check back in after half an hour.

My exact response on Twitter as Dibol1987:
Not everyone has $65+ to spend on EVERY new release in existence. If I'm on the fence, I want to know what I'm getting into before I waste my cash. If there is a significant amount of bugs in the game in question, I am saving myself the headache and wasted trips for refunds.
Edit for BSN: If it were not for let's plays, I would not know how bad Resident Evil 6 was with the Quick Time Events. Same thing goes for the Tomb Raider reboots. No thanks to a real-life shoulder injury, not to mention the amount of damage the "button-mash" QTEs does to my controllers, I am turned off from buying the game in question. Had Spider-Man 2018 NOT made the QTE's optional, I would have avoided the damn game. I avoided Days Gone after seeing that QTEs were mandatory.

I often wonder the same thing. I have 4 kids ranging from age 28 - 16. The older two 25/28 aren't into twitch, you tube, or the like while the 18/16 yrs old are. When I asked my 16 yr old the same question she looked at me like I suddenly grew another head. She does it mainly she says, because her friends do and she sees some funny stuff on there.
Different generations like different things. I will never do it or understand the entertainment value, but I'm sure my parents thought the same thing about my generation.

Streams - If they have a decently soothing voice and aren't screaming profanities at their game (i.e. they are showing that they are enjoying playing), I'll watch them just to relax and be entertained. I usually only watch playthroughs of games I've played and I don't often enter into chat. (Shh... sometimes I even fall asleep while watching... which is perfectly allowed at my age.)
If I'm playing a new game and having troubles with it (not that uncommon for me), I do sometimes seek out tutorial videos on Youtube. This seems to be an area that only a few do well.

Can understand the reasoning, to some degree, but the ones I've seen ( the more "popular ones") sound so incredibly fake..like watching a comedy show, but without jokes. Constant yelling, then they start laughing ( for some reason), throwing around their hands every two seconds..utterly absurd. Same with people wasting their time watching "Reality shows".

I can tell you with 100% certainty that the most of it is "fake". Well, fake and fake. It is genuine emotion amplified for the show. It is kinda like how some people laughs harder about a joke if with company, than they would do if they sit alone. I know I tend to do this, when I sit by myself I will give a mild chuckle at best at a funny moment, if I am with friends that'll turn into louder laughter. Your reactions are usually amplified if with company. And I am quite certain that when youtubers know they are recording they have that feeling as well as being with company, especially if they have done it for years. I have noted that many let's play youtubers say that they too are having fun doing what they are doing, because it is kinda like sitting and playing with a friend... in some of their cases, millions of friends. Luckily, the big let's players tend to do a lot of charity. I think they are a bunch of wholesome people and worth supporting regardless.

Why are you here in forums talking about game when you could be playing them?
I don't watch streams, i never have. Maybe if I did I'd like it.
I do watch youtube videos. The two reasons would be gameplay if I'm undecided on getting the game, and after I beat a game but want to get better at it. Its more the latter, as a easy bioware example I easily played ME3 on insanity, but didn't touch MP for over a year. I started playing and was fine up to gold but couldn't solo for shit. I kept seeing posts about soling platinum, I couldn't solo bronze. So I watched some videos, saw what they were doing and tried to emulate it. Bronze I handled quickly, silver took a bit more time and with the human sentinel and got I forget its name the juggernaut maybe, with those I could infrequently solo gold. ME2 lair of the shadow broker, I remember watching a video where a person blew through in an absurd time the scene where you are chasing the vanguard lady and her reinforcements keep showing up in flying pickup trucks, without pausing they'd target the trucks and before they had a chance to land, strip the shields, singularity them and blow them up. It motivated me to develop a no pause gameplay for me2 and on.

Well - I am 64 years old, and I watch LP's (I have given my reasons a few posts back), so I do not think it has anything to do with age or generations. I think it's a mindset, that some people share and some just don't. But that's my humble opinion.

Luckily, the big let's players tend to do a lot of charity. I think they are a bunch of wholesome people and worth supporting regardless. This is specifically why I enjoy group LPs, and have a hard time seeing the point in single gamers streaming. Listening to friends actually joking and trying to make each other laugh while discussing what they're seeing back and forth is a lot more natural and entertaining than watching one attention whore in a headset trying to make a spectacle of themselves while pretending that they're invested in a game. If anyone is interested in some light group LPs to listen to on the side while you're playing something else, I'm personally a fan of the 'Bespoke Recitations' series on Penny Arcade's Twitch stream, even though I utterly detest having to sift through that mess of a service to access most of the videos. They mostly deal in text-based games like Phoenix Wright, Doki Doki Literature Club and Dream Daddy, games I'd normally never bother with myself. Their commentary and voice-acting are legitimately hilarious, and the stories and dialogue in those games are usually at least worth a listen. I was also inspired to run through the Souls series again by Eurogamer's Let's Play series with Aoife Wilson and Johnny Chiodini, easily found on Youtube. Listening to them alternately bicker about who just dropped 40.000 souls (Johnny) and who accidentally fell to their death for no reason a bunch of times (also Johnny), and also try to keep each others' spirits up through the most punishing boss fights in modern gaming while you're playing it yourself helps make that world feel a little less lonely throughout. Especially if you, like me, treat the online aspects of all kinds of games with the utmost fear and suspicion.

If I'm on the fence about a game I'll watch gameplay of it to see if I'll like it. but the whole watching someone play as a past-time instead of playing yourself is strange to me. Also the chat over the top is annoying as fuck.

I mostly do it to learn, in strategy games and building games. Some games of this type have become rather complex and there is always something you tend to overlook.

Main reasons I use Twitch are to ask questions about a particular game, whether it's good or not, and to inquire about tips.

I watch horror game streams from time to time for the entertainment value(oh,those early pewdiepie reactions ) and i can understand why people would want to watch streams. It can be entertaining. A great percentage of stream watchers do it just for the feeling of companionship and might not even care about the game being played(at least i've seen people admitting to it on reddit). Personally,i've come to the conclussion that vidya streams for a game you really like are a form of cuckholdry

I don't have any friends who game so I'll watch let's plays just to see other people's reactions to plot twists/bosses/etc of the games I've played and enjoy their enjoyment of something I find fun. It's nice to see other people being entertained by the stuff that entertains you.
Sometimes there's a game I know I wouldn't enjoy the gameplay of, but I'm still interested in the story, so I'll watch a let's play to experience that.
Sometimes the let's players are just funny and I like watching them. It's like a tv comedy series but instead of a tv show there's gameplay as the visuals.

I often watch streams of horror games, since I do love horror, but am easily frightened when playing a horror game . And some people give a lot of lore insight during gameplay - for example Outstar did an astonishing playthrough of Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. And while I played that game about 30 times myself, I still learned a lot from watching her play, because she has such a vast knowledge of the World of Darkness. Other times it's because I don't own a console and want to know, what some console games are all about, Bloodborne for example. As a huge Lovecraft fan I was really interested in that game, so I watched some playthroughs. Sometimes I want to know, what some decisions lead to, when I don't want to play that route, because it's not something, I want to do.
And as otehrs have mentioned, there are games, where I don't like the gameplay mechanic a lot but want to experience the story. Try playing the Souls games on pc, it's really annoying, the controls are so clunky, which doesn't help in the notorious hard fights. But the story and mythology of that world is just great.

I'll watch a few minutes of a stream of a game I'm considering buying just to check it out, and occasionally I'll watch for a bit to see alternative options to a decision. Why people spend hours and hours watching someone else have fun instead of doing it themselves is a great mystery to me.

Yeah for example I enjo ywatching other peopl pla ythe recent Tomb Raider reboot trilogy almost as much as playing it myself at times. Probably moe rso seeing as I'm no tthe on ewho ha st okeep hammerin the button every time a QTE comes along. I often watch Game Riot's channel and see some o fthe games he's been playing. Recently been watching some of his Resident Evil remake playthroughs.

for me, some games are equally as much fun to watch as they are to play. Sometimes there are games I can't play like co-op, pc or Xbox titles. So, say I'll watch Achievement Hunter play them as an example. I've actually bought GTA 5, because of Achievement Hunter streaming it and also Hitman 2; although that's another YouTuber. It's also kinda like watching a sports broadcast with commentary.
