We all got into this franchise one way or another. What ultimately started it for you? I think for me, I think the biggest factor was it being an RPG. After having played Mass Effect 1, it's what got me engaged back into the RPG genre, and spurred my continued play of other RPG's (ex. Blue Dragon, Two Worlds II, Lost Odyssey, Rise of the Argonauts, The Last Remnant, Tales of Versperia, etc). As a result, Dragon Age: Origins made it on my list. To a lesser degree, I think it was also because BioWare had made it and I really enjoyed my time playing ME1. Tbh, I really didn't know much of anything about Dragon Age: Origins before it released. I think I just rented it off gamefly when I found out it was an RPG. I had a pretty good play session with the game, though I will admit I only gave it one playthrough.

I guess name recognition is the best fit for me. I've been following Bio since I got the BG2 demo disc with my CGW issue. (I had played both CRPGs and D&D before, but had burned out on both back in the early 90s.) Stuck with Bio ever since as long as the project is in a genre I like. (So, not TOR, not Anthem, JE is borderline.)

I picked "Other" as it was really a combination of things. I had heard of it because... BioWare, and being a story-driven RPG in the vein of the older D&D games.
Though I didn't take the plunge until it started winning awards and I was getting a lot of recommendations from friends. Even then, it really took the Awakenings expansion, and that 2nd PT trying a different Origin story (and realizing they were all good), before I was actually hooked.

I got into Dragon Age because my friend told me you can have gay sex with Iron Bull. It might be EXTREMELY SHALLOW for some people but the biggest deciding factors what got me hooked were gay romances and decent character customization. On a less shallow note, I also did like most of the characters as well, Dragon Age Inquisition being my first DA game, oddly enough.

The price of the game. After playing ME2 a few times, the guy at the game store suggested trying Dragon Age Origins made by the same developer. The price was low so I said, what the heck. Enjoyed the game. Then later I bought the Ultimate Edition.

Well I said “The Genre” but the company was a factor. I got into RPG games in the first place because of KOTOR though I didn’t really follow BioWare as a company for a long time. Really not until I played Mass Effect only a few months before DAO came out.
I was interested in DAO because I wanted to play more games that let me guide a customized character through a story with choices.

I was not a gamer. I played some Blizzard stuff and harvest moon and a couple obviously popular JRPGs since 11 but I was not a gamer.
I picked DAO up off the shelf because "it had dragons" and I was sick with a bad cold at 28 and didn't just want to lay like a potato watching bad tv (because most tv is bad to my tastes)
I was hooked as soon as it got so effing "real" in the City Elf origin. Stayed up all night playing
Then found out romance was a thing as I was swept away with the drama of the story. The different outcomes with the Landsmeet and the Dark Ritual Conundrum had me agonizing. My emotions were totally invested. Riding off into the Sunset with Warden Alistair felt well earned, like a good end to what seemed like such a rocky start. I could have been a nobody that was hung, instead I got to be a somebody that saved the world.
What does that fall under?

I preordered the Origins, because I read about it and I love the RPGs. Simple story. So: The Genre. (I was not disappointed.)

I had gone through a period without playing any computer games as there was too much going on IRL that I was trying to deal with. Then things settled down and my daughter returned from university for the summer and recommended DAO, knowing how I had formerly been keen on fantasy CRPGs, particularly those by Bioware. So I got a copy and I was hooked. Coming to it late meant that DAA was already out for me to continue with and then it wasn't long before DA2 arrived. Then whilst waiting for the arrival of DAI, she suggested I try Mass Effect to fill in the time. Once again, coming late to the scene meant I could play through the entire trilogy straight off. Happy Days!

Brand recognition:
I believe it was around the time Inquisition was just starting to be a thing. I had played the three ME games at that point and decided to pick up Origins and, despite what I heard about it, 2. I now prefer DA to ME and liked 2 more then Origins.

Ultimatively? The Sims 3 and Tumblr No, let me explain: Back in 2007 or so I bought The Sims 3. To be able to play The Sims, I needed an Origin account. Fast forward to 2014, the people I follow on tumblr post a lot of Dragon Age gifs. I thought it looked interesting, but didn't give it much thought. Then one day I saw a post that said "DAO free on Origin!" I remembered I had an Origin account and Downloaded DAO. Liked it and bought the Ultimate Edition. Liked the DLCs and bought DA2, liked that too and had to wait for DAI to come out.

I came across the name and a trailer on some corner of the internet, i don't even remember where, an elder scrolls forum maybe?
The trailer in question was a gameplay one where they played through a section of ostagar twice, first with a human male Noble and then with a elf mage making different choices and being responded to differently by npcs.
I was really impressed as the only video game rpgs I'd really played up to that point were Elderscrolls Oblivion which, while it allows you to make your character pretty much whatever you want, it won't react to that in anyway and the questlines are linear for the most part.
So looking at a fantasy game where the npcs reacted to who i am and i got to make choices that would also be reacted to was like wow. The closest I'd seen a video game get to the table top experience.
So that gameplay trailer is what made me decide i wanted the game and start looking into it further ( discovering all the origins, lore etc)
To this day dao's balance of limiting your backgrounds so that the world can respond to you whilst still letting you define your characters personality, appearance and how they feel about their background ( complete with that background being playable) is the best video game protagonist experiance I've had.
Gameplay isn't an option on the poll, so i guess I'll click other

I saw some pre-release information somewhere or other (possibly an article in PC Gamer) and thought 'that looks interesting'. The game I actually got was completely different from the pre-release artwork but it was great anyway.

Picked "Other."
I saw DA Origins in the store, thought it looked interesting, and picked it up. It sat on my desk unplayed for probably a year at least because I figured since my PC at the time couldn't run NWN2 it also wouldn't be able to run DAO.
After I got my new computer up and running, and played through NWN2 several times, I gave DAO a try. Was kind of intimidated by it at first since it looked rather complicated but eventually got into it. Discovered the Ultimate Edition on Origin and bought that too so I would have all the DLC + Awakening. Then bought DA2. Played through both games multiple times, until ME3 was near to coming out, at which point I binged ME1 and 2 (first PTs) so I could then play ME3 with an import. Spent the next 1.5 yrs in ME universe, then switched back to DA when DAI was getting closer to release.
Edit: Just noticed that "Setting" is listed twice in the poll. I guess I could pick that, based on my "sounds interesting" reason for buying it.

I picked Story, as that is my primary consideration for RPGs now. However, 12 years ago, when I was looking to get back into PC gaming, my primary consideration was pause-and-play, as did not want to do twitch combat. So I looked at a few games in a "brick and mortar" store and decided on Neverwinter Nights.

BioWare!
I had fallen out of touch with their work after being disappointed with the original Neverwinter Nights campaign, but when I saw they were making another fantasy IP with mages and dragons I watched a bunch of trailers and saw enough to get me excited. Bought Origins on release day and have no regrets a decade later.

Other: DA:O was a birthday present & so I gave it a shot, what kept me was the wide choice of character that I was presented with, the decisions, the party members & the romance, but, a random birthday gift was what started me off.
