The genre, love rpgs(apart Form jrpgs, I don't like the looks there mostly), and of course Bioware. They made some of my most loved games and of course, I gave it a try. The last reason was the story and the world, both sounded interesting. DA is still my second favorite game franchise, after Vampire the Masquerade Bloodlines. So yeah, I think, I made a good choice in buying DAO back then

Artwork. Glorious artwork of Garrus and Alistair I found in art blogs suggested to me based on the ones I usually follow.
And then there was Fenris.
I've been down this rabbit hole since then and never left.

I discovered BioWare in 2010. The hype for ME3 was off the charts then. I became interested in it for a rather shallow reason: gay romances. Gay people don't get good quality romance (specially back then), and so when we get wind of a gay romance anywhere, we're not just attracted to the source- we obsess over it.
I had never picked up a game like Mass Effect or Dragon Age before, so this was a huge step for me. I am SO glad I took it, because these games were so much more than good gay romances. The crew of the Normandy became my friends.

For me it was threough Msss Effect as I was playing and enjoying Mass Effects 1 and 2 as someone on another site recommended ME to me so decided to check them out (3 wasn't out at that time) and after playing and enjoying ME I was curious to find out what other games Bioware had done and that's how I discovered Dragon Age. It took me a bit longer to get to grips with DA but thanks to getting some strategy guides it helped me a lot to try and understand DA's mechanics to the point wher I felt confident about building my own charactres and making good use of them. But I was still relativel ynwe to RPG's at the tim eso didn't really know how to play them properly whereas I do now thanks to the guides and further experiences I've had

I'd say genre, but to me it was actually a single part of the genre: the chance to play as a woman. I had played, not even knowing those were by the same SH, KoTOR, Neverwinter Nights and Baldur's Gate2, and I wanted to play more games were I could make my own character and play. I was just gifted with Gothic 2, the time to play enought to understand that there was no CC, and uninstalled it. This friend of mine still resent me a little over it. I was reading a pc games megazine (yup, I had no internet at the time) and fell in love with the premise of CC, different origins and races. So I got Dragon Age Origins for the PS3 at the first occasion.
I absolutely loved it. I rarely played a game so many times. And the rest is history.

I started with Origins in... I wanna say 2010? The biggest hook for me was the dark fantasy aspect. I'm all about swords & sorcery. Then I met the characters and fell in love with Bioware's writing.

Setting for me is what caught my attention.
I was already familiar with BioWare at that point, played KOTOR, Jade Empire and Mass Effect and all that, plus loved Baldur's Gate.
When I first heard about Dragon Age: Origins I thought it was just another cookie-cutter fantasy setting. I then started some research on the lore and I found it to be actually interesting. Detailed, unique to a point, had a lot of good stuff in it. Dragon Age 2 cemented that further, especially with the narrative and characters, and Inquisition has kept that going.
The setting is the appeal for me in Dragon Age, the world is dynamic and under my own continuity, and I hope BioWare continues this for years to come with Thedas, a living continuity all to our own. That is the power of the game for me.

I picked other.
It's going to sound shallow but I was playing ME2 and I loved (and still do) the Blood Dragon armor design.
At first I wasn't willing to buy a take just to get a cosmetic for another game. Some time later I felt like playing a fantasy RPG. I looked at several, then remembered the developer of my favourite videogame (KotOR) and that I could get that Blood Dragon armor if I bought DA:O.
So I did.
Less shallow are the reasons that got me into the rest of the franchise. That has to do with storytelling, the characters, how they treated their worldbuilding and how they explored certain topics like religion, mage vs Templars...

Ironically what brought me to the dragon age franchise was when game informer did their big article before DA2 came out. I wanted to play DAO first. I got hooked on it and that led me to buying ME1 as a "buy two used games get one free" at game stop since I saw bioware on it.

I originally stumbled across ME from a Youtube recommendation, but got interested in Dragon Age because it was also made by Bioware. I suspect the story was quite similar to a lot of people, if they weren't fans long before that.

A recommendation from a friend got me into Mass Effect. Though I'd been interested in it a few years before that, it was xbox-exclusive at the time and I didn't own an xbox so I moved on after a while. The friend clued me into the series now being on PC and that the final installment was coming out soon.
And then I saw DAO was a thing after that, and that DA also had a good story and companion romances(Something I'd never really seen in a game before ME and became one of my favorite features of all Bioware games), so I tried it, too. I don't know where that puts it in the choices. I just picked "genre".

A combination of things for me. I remember being incredibly excited about DA:O pre-release because there hadn’t been a new fantasy RPG IP in a while. Then I learned that it had s/s romances in it, which locked it in for me. After all, I hadn’t played Jade Empire yet so Zevran was the first m/m romance I got to experience ever. Only after I became invested in DA:O’s Development, back in 2007-2008, did BioWare really click for me. I had already played Baldur’s Gate and KOTOR and was just getting into Mass Effect. Then I realized that they were all the same developer and I was a fan for life. Fast forward 11-12 years and here we are.

I got into DAO because it was a story driven western rpg. Since my first BioWare game was KOTOR I had heard of the company before. But like I said it was because it was a story driven rpg that got me interested, and to this day DAO is my number one BW game.

Genre for me. I recall it was an impulse buy when I saw it on steam. I may have played an Bioware game before but did not really know the brand or anything. It was a fantasy rpg and well reviewed so gave it a go. One of the best impulse buys since mgs3, from that mass effect, kotor (though I had already played kotor2), jade empire, BG1/2 and old/new Bioware forums soon followed. Glorious.

Genre. Specifically dark fantasy.
I got into it for the blood-stained armor and naked steel and the dirty, claustrophobic temple and tower levels strewn with litter and gnarled roots and burnt corpses. The combat that involved shivving enemies in the back, knocking them down with heavy shield blows, covering them in sticky grease and setting them on fire.
People exploiting their power in historically authentic ways because they're people, and oppressing each other for reasons more complicated than "we're evil and they're weak", making you culpable in their evils by forcing you to choose sides, picking your poison because you don't get the luxury of the world being exactly like you'd want it to.
Have been feeling increasingly short-changed.
