We'll see. Maybe one day. Despite my grumbling/complaining in another thread, my gaming dance card is actually pretty full for the next few years. In no particular order; RDR2 for PC, Jedi Fallen Order, Bloodlines 2, Cyberpunk (maybe), AssCreed "Next", Greedfall and maybe Disco Elysium and - when it comes off Epic exclusive - Outer Worlds. Given the speed at which I play (and the apparent determination of my life to gradually reduce the amount of time I have to game), I should be set with those through to November 2022 at least... Oh well if you play slowly, Red Dead 2 could take months on it's own. That was one long journey. Gorgeous though. Maybe the prettiest game I ever did see on my 1X. I bet it will look stunning on a good PC.

Looking forward to seeing how RDR2 goes - although I've heard it's fairly hungry.

I'm full, bruh, I'll need to quit my job to catch up on all these games

A lot of my issues revolve around when driving the batmobile and things like the game freezing or stuttering for it cannot keep up with the rapidly changing graphics I failed the tutorial a few times because of the problems I had. Now my problems are compounded with being more vulnerable to motion sickness so when I was play the game near launch I was sick a couple of times while driving so my opinion will be always tarnished by that as well.

Guess what.
I DO NOT WANT THEM TO COMPETE ON GRAPHICS.
I'd rather have 2013 graphics and excellent lore, world consistency, dialogue, and character development, FAR more than 2023 graphics.

While I am in the same boat, the problem is a lot of gaming public isn't and because of the cost of development and BioWare making more of a niche game they are looking to ways to appease that market. Even then there are plenty of people that do complain about BioWare graphic levels for I remember when Mass Effect 3 was released even on the official boards there were plenty of people posting how "old" the game looked because it used stylized graphics and wasn't photo-realistic and how BioWare must make modern looking games in the future.

I honestly never saw that critique of Mass Effect 3, and if it happened, it was a minority complaint. Far and away most people complained about the ending and writing (though personally I loved ME3 and didn't have the the same complaints). Obsidian doesn't use THE BEST graphics in my opinion, and a lot of niche developers making games like No Man's Sky or Kerbal Space Program steal hearts with thunder and applause at the conventions with unique and well-cut trailers promising something more than a soulless graphics card demo.

Seems to me graphics will be a non-issue with DA4 to any but the nitpickiest of players, given that it'll be built on Anthem's codebase. Frostbite has many issues but it's undeniably an engine that makes for very pretty games.

Frostbite is a great engine that can produce stunning visuals with a smooth frame rate. It may not be the easiest engine to use, but you can't argue with the results.
I don't need top of the line graphics with all the bells and whistles in my games either, but I do like some basic quality standards like character models with healthy looking body proportions, i.e. not something like Scott Ryder. His body has oddly short lower legs - his knees are almost at the same height than those of his markedly shorter sister, and their main height difference is instead caused by his overly big torso. It just looks weird and I can't unsee it, and the more "realistic" a game's overall graphic style becomes, the more such flaws stand out. That's something I'd really like them to work on.

Trust me people will find something they want to complain about loudly even if its something BioWare has done for years because they feel the game didn't cater to their needs and even graphically if there isn't a lot of room for it.

If you go back to Mass Effect 2 and 3 I think BioWare did something similar with the male and female versions of the game by using the same character model and tweaked it enough to make two characters. Its one of the reasons why the party members were using shoes that looked to be them wearing heels. It wasn't because they wanted the female characters in heels, but that they had to find a way to alter the character so the shrunk male skeleton wasn't floating above the ground. Its also why female Shepard sat and moved more like a male would then a female in some of the cutscenes.

Can they? Yes, if they took the time to examine what made their older RPGs like KOTOR, Baldur's Gate, and DAO so endearing.
The real question is, do they care to?

The question is if they follow that roadmap would the game be successful? Back in those days selling a couple hundred thousand copies was considered being a big success. Jade Empire the last game BioWare made of that vein nearly killed the company because it was a financial flop that was liked by critics and those that bought the game, but barely sold.

And without microtransactions or GaaS either There is still a demand for it.

I wonder if the industry still relies on focus testing in order to gauge player interest in certain gameplay and design mechanics. I know data analytics is normally one of the big factors they use in determining how the player interacts and engages with certain content. I bring this up because I wonder if BioWare has ever asked any of it's audience if they would like to return to the more traditional RPG style they were known for.

Historically, Bio as an organization has always wanted to be in the AAA space, and EA bought them to do just that.

There is a demand for it, after all. They could dominate that market again if they cared to. What remains to be seen is do they still want to?

I don't remember anyone complaining about the graphics. It was a beautiful game and the combat was smooth. I heard complaints about the story and the ending. The only thing I heard people complain about in terms of looks was that ashley's armor was sexualized or something like that.

And Greedfall and the Outer Worlds are both recent successes done by AA companies who didn't even do Bioware elements as well as classic Bioware did. And without microtransactions or GaaS either There is still a demand for it. Agreed; such games aren't going away. The question is whether Bio and EA want to play in that space. Historically, Bio as an organization has always wanted to be in the AAA space, and EA bought them to do just that. Yeah, ultimately it’s unfortunately a money-based industry and more classic-style rpgs are a decidedly niche market, meaning that AAA production values and classic rpgs tend to be mutually exclusive, at least for the time being. Personally, though, I think that despite some misfires they’ve done a pretty good job of bringing the core of their games into a more AAA-marketable action-rpg-inflected, fully-voiced model. Honestly they’ve improved notably on some things over the years, having played said older games fairly recently, while they do have their charm, a lot of the RP tended to be very simplistic and black-and-white, something that they have improved on in most of their more recent games imo. The older games certainly have their merits, but I think a lot of the tendency to value them over modern contributions is nostalgic at heart. By and large a better metric on that front to pit the modern games against, I think, are some of the games from the modern AA cRPG resurgence, such as Obsidian’s recent output, Torment: Tides of Numenera, the Shadowrun games, Disco Elysium, DOS2, etc.

I'm not asking them to use ME1 2007 graphics. Thank about it, ladies and gentlemen. Think of 2013. GTA V. If you saw an E3 trailer for ME5 using GTA V graphics what would be your reaction? We'd pee our pants out of excitement dude. Not just us. Not just the BSN. The entire gaming world. I honestly do not have any desire to see anything more polished than GTA V graphics. You combine some good ol' 2013 graphics with some Mass Effect 2 writing and you're a hundreds-of-millions-aire. It's really that simple. How do they not see this?

Am I just outdated? Am I old? Is the Generation Z gamer really gonna be SAD about the GTA V graphics in their 2023 game?
