Update #14: $650k Stretch Goal Reached - Freddie and Pan Romance Update! Woah!
We hit $650k - our first stretch goal. That means both Freddie and Pan are going to be romanceable. We're so excited!
Our next stretch goal is $700k, allowing us to add additional songs to the game, and a quest with the Minotaur featured in our trailer -- and then at $725k, a "making-of" documentary and Karaoke livestream. We still have just 40 hours left - let's see how far we can make it. 💪
To celebrate hitting $650k, here are two romance stories from David Gaider. These will not be in the final game, but hopefully give you a sense of what the romances with Pan and Freddie will be like!
--
Freddie Grace raced along the rocks, moving as quickly as she dared despite the hazardous footing. The storm raged overhead as it always did in Hades, the occasional flashes of lightning dispelling the greenish gloom for only a moment. In one of those flashes, she finally caught sight of Freddie below - lying askew, like a cast-off rag doll, and covered head to toe in blood.
She wanted to cry out, but it was almost too much to bear. Breathless, she closed the distance, somehow certain that she’d find Freddie lying lifeless and unable to consider what would happen then. Even as the unthinkable crossed her mind, she reached Freddie only to realize her eyes were open. She was on her back, staring up at the Hades sky with a perturbed expression on her face.
“He exploded, Grace. Like a paint-filled balloon.” Freddie’s amused laugh bubbled up out of her like something unexpected. Grace took Freddie’s offered hand wordlessly and lifted her up to a sitting position. Freddie’s gaze was still unfocused, staring off into the distance.
“So, all this blood is…?”
That seemed to bring Freddie back to the present. She glanced down at her clothes, now completely coated in the brackish substance which looked black in the dim light of the Underworld. “Oh, that’s not mine. You were totally right. I just had to lead him away from you, and then pop! No more bad guy.”
The relief Grace felt was palpable. She was torn between wanting to hug Freddie tight and wringing her neck. Instead, she took Freddie’s hand and kissed it, taking calming breaths to slow her heart. “You’re crazy. You can’t keep doing this! You’re going to get yourself killed.”
“Hey, I’m the sidekick. This is what sidekicks do.”
“And sometimes sidekicks die, Freddie!”
Grace was almost startled when Freddie reached up with her other hand, touching Grace’s cheek tenderly. She had that half-grin which Grace found so adorable. “Not always,” Freddie said quietly. “Sometimes the story ends with the hero looking at the sidekick and realizing there was something there, something they never saw before but maybe always wanted.”
The implicit question hung in the air, and Grace suddenly found her heart racing once again. They were sitting so close… had there always been this electric awareness between them? Grace could almost feel a current, lighting her up from the tips of those guitar string-calloused fingers to the hollows of her own ears, feel it even more when she raised her gaze to look into Freddie’s eyes. Her best friend, the one person in the world who always had Grace’s back, who had believed in her without question and without reservation right from the start. The realization felt so large it left her aching and breathless.
Grace leaned in. It felt so right, so natural. Before their lips touched, however, she felt Freddie’s finger on her chin, stopping her. Freddie’s eyes sparkled with amusement, and her half-grin had returned.
“I want a song, damn it. Make it extra schmaltzy.”
--
Pan “You used me.”
Grace’s accusation didn’t have a lot of conviction behind it. She was more annoyed than anything else and, considering how aggressively she and Pan were dancing on the club floor, she barely had time to even think.
Pan grinned, in that way he had which implied gleeful mischief but nothing in the way of ill intent, and he spun her about… then he caught Grace and suddenly dipped her, leaning in so close she thought for a moment he might kiss her. She could feel the intense warmth radiating from his body.
“Of course I did,” he chuckled. “I told you I would.”
Pan pulled Grace back up to her feet before she could respond, and they continued the dance. She never thought of herself as much of a dancer, to be honest. Sure, she had moves, but whenever she saw two people who were truly in tandem, who seemed like they knew what they were doing, executing complex maneuvers seemingly without thinking about it? That made her envious. Thus it was both strange and exhilarating that, with Pan, she suddenly turned into that kind of dancer. They spun, they thrust, they moved their feet in intricate symmetry all as if they’d practiced it a thousand times.
What’s more, somehow Pan made her the star. People in the club stopped and watched with admiration, and they were looking at her. They retreated to give Grace and Pan space, and immediately Pan presented her, standing back and dropping to one knee as though to declare, “Look at this goddess who deigns to dance with me, look at her!”
“I should be angry with you,” she insisted when he moved in close again. Pan took her hand and raised it, his arm going around her waist as if to tango. Her blood thrilled at the idea, at the sudden knowledge that somehow this would not only be possible, but that’d it’d be amazing, and it became difficult to stay mad. Even more annoying when Pan’s playful smile said he knew that. They moved on the dance floor, a heat building between them like friction, and Pan leaned in once more, breathing along her neck. It sent a shudder of anticipation down the length of her spine.
“The true question, darling one,” he whispered into her ear, “is how you wish to be repaid.”

Update #17: Pre-production, admin and planning! Members of the Chorus! Friends! Countryfolk!
A whole month has passed since the end of the Fig campaign. Although we’ve been pretty quiet publicly, we’ve been incredibly busy work-wise, heading back into pre-production and dealing with all of the admin that comes with a crowdfunding campaign (spoiler alert: It’s A Whole Lot, Oh God).
For investors, Fig is very close to reaching out to confirm and finalise your investments, so stay tuned! We appreciate your patience as we navigate all of the legal and financial waters that come with anything like this.
A bit of a warning, this is a pretty dry update since it’s very early -- but we’d love to hear from you about what you’d like to learn more about!
Let’s talk pre-production!
Pre-production is a crucial part of any project, where questions are answered, systems and tech are prototyped, the full narrative is mapped out, everything is scoped and re-scoped a thousand times as we get better at estimating how long things take, and overall the project is prepared to enter production -- when the game is actually made.
We’ve been taking on board all of the feedback we received during the campaign, tweaking designs and systems to feel more natural and play better, move closer to final versions of what dialogs and songs look like in-engine, and work out how long everything takes. Notably, we’ve returned to the Flow system and are prototyping some changes to emphasise role-playing. When we feel it's in a good place, we'll post an update about it sometime next year!
We’re starting to look at the entirety of production and how it will be laid out -- how we can manage risk, when we should schedule to do some parts of the projects versus others, what we can do up-front to save time later, etc. It’s often unexciting (who wants to have hour-long discussions about risk) but all of this prep means we get to make the best game we can, and ensure it gets finished!
Ben is working on the final style guide for the game, testing how long things different assets take to finish, and building out a more complete version of what a cutscene and conversation will look like.
Troy Ferguson has been taking our early technical prototypes, spinning them around, looking at them and then working how we can implement them for the final game in a way that’s robust and resilient. The goal is to empower everyone on the team to jump in and be able to add content or fix bugs without needing to understand complex technical systems.
Dave has started on the writing (!), with a preliminary version of the prologue of the game we’re using to test all of the above. We’re also beginning the process of thinking about all of the songs in the game, exactly which ones will be interactive, which ones will be more traditional cutscenes, and planning out how we’re going to write and bring them to life throughout the project.
Austin and David are starting early work on songs, and there's a ton of other small details going on as well!
Bigger, better, brighter? We’re also exploring how we might be able to find some additional funding, so we can do things like full VO, hire more artists, or explore more visually dynamic dialog scenes. A lot of this will be talking to funding bodies, publishers and distributors, and seeing what they might have to offer to help make Chorus as successful as it can be. We’ll keep you updated if there’s anything exciting to tell!
(And if you’re a publisher or funding body and Chorus might be up your alley, get in touch -- we’d love to talk to you!)
Surveys, rewards and more, oh my!
We’re a very small team, so it’s going to take a little while to get to surveys, rewards and participation elements, as we mentioned in our last update. We’re expecting the first reward surveys to go out late early February-ish, once we’ve locked down more detail and production has started.
Bear with us, and if you have any questions in the interim, don’t hesitate to reach out.
What do you want to see?
We’ll leave you with a question: What do you want to see out of our monthly updates? We’re keen to hear your ideas, and share whatever we can, whether it’s process, small story snippets, issues we’re facing that month -- let us know!
Have a wonderful next few weeks!
All the best,
Liam and the Summerfall Team

It's a musical adventure game. Instead of physical combat, you overcome obstacles and disagreements with enemies and others by having a sing-off.
Romances are optional.

Quiet in here lately, but they're working on dialog. Some paraphrased parts of the latest update that I found interesting. When making any narrative-driven game, good dialog tools are critically important. Good tools save time and energy, allow writers to make edits to their work directly and focus on content rather than process. For Chorus ... We opted to create our own tools, recognising that the more time and effort we as a studio put into our tools now, the more time we’ll save later and in future games. Outside of AAA game development (and even sometimes in AAA), the most common way to write dialog is usually in spreadsheets — which isn’t ideal for interactive or branching dialog. You can definitely do it, but it requires someone to then come in and script your dialog into the engine, which tends to be extremely inefficient and wastes a lot of time. The process for building our dialog tool ... created something that allowed David to write dialog into the engine directly. Ours is by no means a perfect tool, and no doubt it will change and evolve significantly over time, but it does what it needs to do and is easy to use. Similar to the conversation wheels in Mass Effect, Chorus’ dialog system doesn’t display the full line of dialog for the player, but gives a paraphrased and condensed version that indicates what [the player character] will say if picked... It’s similar to a lot of dialog tools out there like Twine, but integrates more easily with our own systems, like when we want to actually display dialog to the player and put it in a scene (which is an entirely separate tool that we’re still working on).

Update #27: 2020 Wrapup Update (with video)! Posted: 12/18/2020
Hey everyone!
It's almost over. What a TIME. While we're still unsure about exactly how long of a delay COVID is going to cause the project, for the most part Chorus has been coming along incredibly well, and we've hit a lot of our internal goals for the year.
To celebrate, we put together a video detailing what we've been up to in 2020, with a little bit of new art and revealing the redesign of the character of Hermes. Check it out below. Thanks to Jack Crnjanin for his help editing and making this video look good.
So what have we been up to for the past month?
David has made excellent progress on the writing for the game, and is determined to get the first draft of all the dialog finished while the rest of us take a break over the holiday season. He'll then be taking a couple of weeks off before we dive into playtesting, feedback and editing, as well as continued work on all the songs!
Ben and Jess have been working hard to wrap up their work for the year as well, with Ben onboarding a new team member (who we'll introduce next year), doing a bunch more environmental concept art and a temporary UI for menus so we can properly test the game. Jess has done a variety of different tests to help refine our character art pipeline (which she explains more about in the video above), as well as continued work to do initial roughs for one of the big emotive scenes in the game.
Troy has been implementing content to test and putting in a temporary save/load system for testing, before he launches into a proper rewrite in the new year. He's also been putting together new builds, our level loading system and a variety of other smaller tasks as we go.
Austin and our collaborating lyricists (who we’ll also introduce next year) have been iterating on more of the song drafts, creating more incredible music ready for revision during editing next year.
Liam has been in hiring land, and we'll soon have some awesome new team members as we kick production into high gear. We’ll be introducing them as well!
Finally, a big shout out to Josh Sacco, Lexie Mason-Davis, and Bailey Cooper, who are all contractors who have been helping us refine the visual development of backgrounds and generally doing a kickass job.
Thanks for sticking with us, everyone -- we're almost at the stage of development where we'll have a lot more to show, we promise!
Wishing you and yours the very best of holiday seasons,
Liam, David, Elie and the Summerfall team
P.S. Catch David and Liam tomorrow during their last stream for the year as they continue their Dragon Age Origins playthrough! We'll be taking a break from streaming over the holidays and through January, returning towards the end of the month. Make sure to follow us on twitch.tv/summerfallstudios and watch at 5pm PT tomorrow!
P.P.S. News on backer rewards coming next year -- we've had to delay them a little longer, but we promise it's for a very good reason. Stay tuned!

Stay tuned! On a completely unrelated note, your avatar is totally from Gunnerkrigg Court, isn't it? I was just spending some time re-reading everything, and I'm certain that's where its from.... It is

Any word on Summerfall Studios now? They just hired a couple of new artists and a producer, so I guess they're back in the swing of things after the holiday break.

I check on this game every once in a long while. Wouldn't you know it, they just so happened to post a big update today. Biggest news is that the game will be published by Humble, and that it's now called Stray Gods. I had been wondering about that, since there already was a game called Chorus on Steam. Speaking of which, Stray Gods has a Steam page now, with a teaser trailer.
