hopefully we can get to the point of this being no different than a yearly flu shot. There are hundreds of coronaviruses in circulation all the time; all they cause is a common cold. There are predictions that this is the future of covid as well. Here's hoping. It's not just hope, it's very likely. We can extrapolate from the way the "Spanish" flu of 1918 worked: tens of millions died especially in the second wave, a lot less in the third and fourth; by the end of 1920 it was more like seasonal flu. A virus that kills its host is poorly adapted for survival, as it loses a potential vector for its transmission, so the evolution of any virus is towards a certain equilibrium with the host. We can consider the fact that omicron is less likely to provoke grave illness and death, but more contagious, as such an adaptation.
How long will it take to get to that equilibrium? Your guess is as good as mine...

I just booked my booster shot for this Friday. Give me all the needles! Lucky you , I still have to wait for the 50-60 turn to come... They've just accelerated the booster program here - probably not done it soon enough, but better late than never, I suppose - basically you're eligible at 4 months after your second dose, instead of 6 which is what it had been. So I'll be getting mine in late February, as opposed to April.

In Germany they've now changed the booster shot from 5-6 months after the second shot to 3.
Not sure that's the smartest move though given the looong list of elderly who still need their shots. Now tons of young people will rush to get theirs too.
Just as well. Today I booked my booster shot for Dec 28. A few days after my 5 months are up. Suddenly my local vaccination center has a ton of free spots again for the rest of the year. Last time I checked December was booked up everywhere. Huh. Must have gotten more vaccine or something.
I would have waited until late January but with omikron on the rise I'm glad I can get the shot sooner. So I pounced on it. Unless omikron changes my company's home office policy for my department, I'll have to be back in the office sometime in January. (Half of my colleagues are still in the office for a top secret project.) I expect to get COVID at some point through work. So better be as prepared as I can be.

IN recovery right now. Caught it around 6 weeks ago in a hospital waiting room.
At time of writing this I still have zero ability to smell or taste anything, with the exception of a constant 'dirty ashtray' smell in my nostrils at all times. It smells kind of like the clothes of a heavy chainsmoker, or an overflowing ashtray filled with cig butts - not pleasant at all.

Like an old cigar mixed with the slightest hint of garlic. Caught that cold when I went to the dentist, felt like crap the day after. Maybe I had covid too, didn't take any tests. I'm fully vaccinated though.

So far there's only one study here: Omicron largely evades immunity from past infection or two vaccine doses I would be very careful about making assumptions at this point and treat Omicron as any other variant before it. Sorry I'm not bearer of better news.

Like an old cigar mixed with the slightest hint of garlic. Caught that cold when I went to the dentist, felt like crap the day after. Maybe I had covid too, didn't take any tests. I'm fully vaccinated though. Possibly it was Covid. For many people the effects are not so severe, and resemble flu or a bad cold, some get no symptoms at all - others suffer chronic respiratory failure. Loss of taste and smell is a textbook Covid-19 symptom, effecting around 47 per cent of sufferers. Some people experience parosmia, which is basically a distorted sense of smell. 'Burned' or 'smoky' smells in the nostrils are apparently pretty common, others smell sewage, rotten meat, mouldy socks... all that good stuff. What I'm getting (and it seems you are too) is called phantosmia - which causes us to smell odours that do not exist. This is apparently another side effect of Covid-19, though less common than parosmia.

IN recovery right now. Caught it around 6 weeks ago Well, you made it, at least there's that. Hopefully it wasn't too bad. Remember to take it easy; it took almost a year for my lungs to recover. a constant 'dirty ashtray' smell in my nostrils at all times. It smells kind of like the clothes of a heavy chainsmoker, or an overflowing ashtray filled with cig butts This is called phantosmia, or olfactory hallucination. There's very little data about it, and it's relation to covid. My rather educated guess is, that this is caused by the loss of smell. The brain has a tendency to create phantom sensations when no sensory data is available (this is why you hear your phone ringing when in shower). Curiously most describe it as smelling something burned.

I would be very careful about making assumptions at this point and treat Omicron as any other variant before it. Definitely; even the experts/authorities who are saying that there are positive signs with Omicron are bending over backwards to hyper-stress the fact that we just don't have enough data to be sure about anything (except perhaps that it is far more transmissible than even Delta). South Africa - where it was first encountered - is apparently on the cusp of seeing a downward trend in daily cases, though, already (one or two days of decline do not a trend make, after all). Fingers and toes crossed for them.

I'm fully vaccinated though. One thing this whole experience has done is made a lot of us super paranoid, I think. There was a case at our kids school about four weeks back. We were told to monitor for symptoms. No symptoms emerged and then when they wrapped school for the summer, the very next day, both our boys started exhibiting strong 'cold' symptoms. All four of us went and got tested. All four negative. With all the talk, it can be easy to see Covid behind every runny nose, every minor cough. But sometimes...you've just inhaled something that's an irritant. Most times, probably.

There are two studies now, besides the data from South Africa; here’s the link to the british: www.imperial.ac.uk/mrc-global-infectious-disease-analysis/covid-19/report-50-severity-omicron/This, correlated with the different pathogenesis for omicron, keeps me optimistic about it. 🙂

The Asian countries' populations understand this well without understanding it: If everybody wears it all the time, it has an effect on the general spread, sometimes pushing it below a threshold where the epidemic is petering out rather than increasing. ...But getting a Western population to always wear masks... , particularly if you reveal that it only gives them a personally reduced risk of only a few percent...

Got my booster shot (Moderna this time) yesterday evening and today has not been smooth sailing like before...
Whole body started to ache around noon (walking my dog triggered it) and then I got chills. Eventually a headache. But no real fever.
Been feeling rather crappy but objectively minor side effects.

World Junior Hockey championships cancelled after getting under way here in Alberta due to many covid cases amongst the players.
This is a big deal in the sports world.
Also the infection rate here with Omicron is astronomically higher than anything before.
I expect the hospitalization and icu rates to explode again as well after slowly going down.

My wife got her first booster the other day (Pfizer), and this one has really knocked her around. No nausea, but just exhausted and feeling like she’d been punched in the arm (and, weirdly, the armpit).
