I used to hate Sera's guts, but I've opened up the game again after about a year and somehow ended up loving her. My Lavellan and her were off to a cold start but they're bffs now and I'm not sure how it happened lol. I still dislike some things about her, but it's what makes her complex and interesting and her positive qualities make up for it. I'm still kinda miffed about her post-Temple of Mythal dialogue with Lavellan. I wish there was some middle ground between "I am most offended" and "yah they're demons". My Lav was never crazy about the Creator worship and she started veering towards Andrastianism by the end of the game, but she still acknowledged that it would be hard on the elves, and that there's a great historical value in what they found either way. I wish there would be a way to express that without either taking it too personally or agreeing with Sera insulting Lav's people and their beliefs, but alas. I guess they can't cover every possible opinion that a player can have.

Yeah, there's not much of a happy middle ground there - I think it's because that what that conversation really boils down to is Sera needing reassurance that you're not going to cast her off for ancient elf stuff. As a non-Lavellan, I didn't mind the "everything in that temple was highly suspect" option just because.... it kind of..... is? It's full of immortal elves and I think a lot of people would find that very disconcerting.

Pretty much describes my initial reaction towards Sera. I think mine was one of slight bemusement: I didn't get her at all but didn't object either; it was just a case of "er, okay... alright then. *shurg*".

I shamelessly spoiled myself here on the forums so I was like, "WELL THAT'S NOT VERY NICE." but then I actually played the game myself and I was like.... omg I love her, my perfect elf wife. 😍

I shamelessly spoiled myself here on the forums so I was like, "WELL THAT'S NOT VERY NICE." but then I actually played the game myself and I was like.... omg I love her, my perfect elf wife. 😍 I think a lot of people actually found it quite challenging to accept her awesomeness. I'd gone into it blind and only really paid any attention to the daft elf with Sex Pistols trousers once my lame attempts to chat up Cassandra came to their inevitable conclusion. And then I was in love. Edit: that also sounds really rather shallow now that I've re-read it. D: Hopefully it didn't come across that way! But now that I've put the idea in everybody's mind...

I think I can say I now like Sera. It took me a long time to get past my anger towards some of Sera's actions and even then, it required working with traumatized youth who came from unstable environments to finally soften.
What I've been operating from was an expectation that she has all the emotional stability needed to make a self aware decision. But she doesn't. Sera has not grown up in a stable environment, she wasn't given the love and life skills needed to be socially sensitive and aware. What's worse, she's displaying signs of trauma, having faced abusive racism and not having her needs reliably met. So she's lashing out before anyone else can hurt her.
All of this fits what was suspected, that giving her patience and support will soften some of her viewpoints and give her a reason to look beyond her knee-jerk survival need to protect her psychological wellbeing. I can't say I support all that she does, but I can say that she's worth giving time and care to understanding where she's coming from. It makes the cookie scene on the roof have meaning for me now where it didn't before. She's trying. She's trying to work past the bad memories with cookies. Everything she does makes sense now. She's reacting from a position of protecting herself.

She's reacting from a position of protecting herself. This is it. She has a brittle defense mechanism to criticism because of all she's been through. You need to provide her with the support, home and family she never had. Show her that another way is possible instead of lecturing her, and you begin to see that bear fruit in Trespasser.

There's a ton of verbal and emotional abuse that you have to have a resilience towards in order to see the vulnerability behind the words. Sera is practically civil and restrained compared to some of the youth. Between the power struggles and the dominance that has to be established in order to demonstrate kindness and compassion to them, it takes full, sincere effort to see progress from them. Same with Sera. She has the same contradictory approval of direct bluntness and fragile sensitivity. Is it just me, or does she seem to have some symptoms of borderline personality?

I don't have the expertise to know that; I'm no mental health professional. It's clear that she had a troubled childhood and adolescence, but I wouldn't claim to have specific insight beyond that. You'd have to ask Lukas Kristjanson if he tried to write some specific condition...

You'd have to ask Lukas Kristjanson if he tried to write some specific condition... I think some conditions come through strongly for some characters even when the writer didn't intend it or was aware. One of the aspects of borderline tends to be marked by an "I hate you-Don't leave me!" attitude so it's curious to think about. Thedas already throws a monkey wrench into mental disorders because of spirits and demons inducing depression, madness, etc. In the end, Sera is Sera. She's functional so far and that's what matters. She'll still get me to crack up when her attempted murder knife scene fails only to be followed up by a nut crunch.

Aww, this whole conversation warms my heart. Honestly, the moment that made me fall for Sera, both as a character and as a LI, was the desperation in her voice during her bad dream/love confession scene. She's never had anyone she was terrified to lose, because no one's ever wanted her around, and she's learned to return the favor by pushing people away before they get too close. She calls herself, her feelings, her insight "stupid" over and over and over because that's what's been drilled into her her whole life - that she's too stupid to understand, that she's "crazy" and doesn't make sense. Too elfy for humans, too human for elves. She's never had someone say to her, "I want you around, and I want you just as you are." That's all she needs to blossom and grow. Make some room in your life for her, tell her she has a place with you (as a friend, a lover, a valued member of the Inquisition), instead of lecturing her and all those defense mechanisms melt away. All she's ever wanted was for someone to want her.
