I ended up burying the enslavers (and everything next to them) under a few Earthshaker volleys, which was a satisfying solution to the problem. It's been ages that I played a game that required me to pay attention to so many factors and numbers, so I'm taking it a bit slow and learn as I go. I'm quite pleasantly surprised by the game's quality given how tiny the dev studio is. The "What would Cain do..." line refers to the Ciaphas Cain series of novels. Unusually humorous for a 40k story, they are the memoirs of Commissar Ciaphas Cain, who is revered as a hero throughout the Imperium but is actually quite a coward who gained his hero status by accident and desperately scrambles to maintain this reputation (because he figures it will protect him from being shot in the back by his own troops, and the accommodations are also quite nice) without getting killed in the process. Mechanicus is a little gem I quite enjoyed, plus it's the only game about the "cogboys" as Commissar Cain would say that I'm aware of. Basilisks are great, I always end up building more than I need. I was a bit underwhelmed at first, but then I played as Necrons, and my front line got tanked by Bullgryns while receiving a wholesome amount of Earthshaker rounds each turn. That taught me.
It's a quality game alright, and very stable, no crashes so far, for me at least. And the patches actually have polished the game, and rarely introduced new bugs. Sure, it could use more icing on the cake, but I'm happy with what I got so far.
I think it would be great if they added a head-to-head game, where you would buy units with points like in the TBT game. But I doubt we'll get one at this point.

About modding those build limits: it works perfectly. It's almost as if the game was originally designed to be that way, but they decided to go the normal 4X game route instead.
The Dynamics of the game changes entirely, since now you can't just bide your time and build up your forces. And you can't build a large reserve to guard your cities. You actually have to make use of your weaker and squishier units in the endgame, to act as speedbumps and pickets if nothing else. Now it's all about destroying the AI's cities. You leave your cities undefended and make an all out assault on your Ork neighbour, only to find out that the Eldar had the exact same idea. So you are facing the entire Eldar attack force while trying to destroy the Ork cities. There will be losses, there will be retreats, and there's no way of knowing who will come out on top. Now your buffs, healers and maluses really matter. I think it's brilliant, but I can understand that a 4X game was originally an easier sell.

So, I dug up this game after a while. There's a new(ish) DLC, Specialist Pack, and I thought I'd give it a try. Every faction gets a new unit and it costs atm around $6. I did a clean install, so an unmodded game this time. Only three PTs so far, but the DLC seems fine. This time the added units bring more balance to the game, or add unit types that factions were in need of. The guard get Ratlings snipers, which are pretty cool and useful in the early game. Necrons get Canoptek Wraiths, and I found them to be very useful as scouts because of their 6 movement. They also have freedom of movement, so they don't get surrounded and stuck. The Orks get another ridiculously massive war machine, the Kill Bursta. It has 112 HP from the start, and three movement; it suits the Orks all right. Haven't seen other new units yet.

This is excellent news! They took their time, but this is most welcome. I particularly like this: "Reprogram Kastelan Robot: Capture enemy Kastelan Robots with Cybernetica Datasmiths’ programming rituals."
On the other hand, there goes the holiday season..

So, Adeptus Mechanicus DLC. What can I say, it's brilliant. It's the DLC to get if you are still into this game. It's $15, so steep as usual, but it's a new faction and a great one at that. I've had fun with it, and it's already patched to 1.9.1.
Been working on an Infantry only -mod, but it's still WIP, will report later.

About my Infantry only -mod. It works, but there are balance issues. Shocking, I know. I might add light scout vehicles and see how that will work. More to report later.

I seem to remember that the Craftworld Aeldari were somewhat unbalanced in this game, is that still the case?

Got a chance to finally play as the Adeptus Mechanicus last night and I am really enjoying the feel of their faction.
Hopefully the mod I'm using (Tabletop Gladius) gets updated because I would very much like to play a full game as them.

Craftworld Aeldari were somewhat unbalanced I'd say they atill are. I've been reading the changelogs, and not much has changed, unfortunately. You can always adjust the faction difficulty, but then they seem to get crushed very early. I'm thinking this is intended behavior, because there are early and late game factions by design.

I am really enjoying the feel of their faction. It's a good faction, I like them a lot. And catching Kastelan robots is my new main hobby. Kastelans are cool, and tanky enough for keeping them around in the late game. Nothing like free, big scary robots that harm you even when you shoot at them.

About my Infantry only -mod: It hit a snag, and I mean the kind that sinks your boat. Once a city grows big enough, the AI can't destroy it anymore. Big cities have so much HP, that AI loses faith and retreats. Meaning of course, that the human player wins every time, and where's the fun in that, right?
Oh well, fun times were had.

Behold, resurrection! I haven't played Gladius in a little over a year, so it's high time to return to the thread. Not much happened in the meantime; new DLC, the Escalation Pack, which added new units was released, but that was it. Wasn't really feeling the benefits of added units, so I gave that a pass. So what changed in 2023 that made me return to the game? A new DLC, Adepta Sororitas was released, and you know me: I can't resist new factions. And while I was at it, picked up the Escalation pack as well. More is more after all. I'm sure most here know this better than me, but Adepta Sororitas is an all-female part of the Adeptus Ministorum, consisting of some of the most elite units of the Empire, as well some of the most wretched ones, armed with mostly, well, faith. Apprently the DLC was initially a real bugfest, but it was patched, and it worked mostly fine. I did notice that at least one animation was missing, but that didn't bother me too much; I was too busy slaying heretics. Only one PT so far, will post more later.

TL/DR: about modding Gladius, Adepta Sororita (AS), Escalation pack, Overall gameplay in 2023 About modding As you know, I can’t resist modding Gladius: it’s fairly simple and everything is in XML files. I still think I got the best results by limiting the amount of units you can build. This makes the gameplay more tactical, since you can’t win just by spamming endgame units. There are downsides to this approach, but I’ll get to that later. This time I made a largish mod and put everything in Excel, in order to calculate a reference value for each unit. The formula is simple: ref = 2*production cost + HP. This gave me values ranging from about 60 to over 200. Anything over 150 I considered to be a monstrous unit and limited mostly to one. All vehicles were limited to 3-6 units, as well as elite infantry units. Cheap infantry could still be spammed, but If you’ve lost your elites, early game infantry will hardly save you. The results were delightful: I sort of have two games now, where I can choose whether I want to play a tactical game or just casually spam units. The only serious side effect is that, sometimes the AI factions get locked in an unresolvable battle. This can be helped by playing against fewer AI opponents, or playing against an AI team. I tried the mod as Adeptus Mechanicus, The Guard, Eldar, Necrons, AS, Space Marines and Tau. All in all, it’s the best mod I’ve done so far. I really like the tactical gameplay, where you sometimes have to think carefully about every move and action. A single unit can make a difference now, and you really sigh in relief, when the pressure starts to ease. Infantry is supremely important, because your vehicles just can’t get enough shots out per turn. And tactical retreats are a thing; you don’t want those monstrous units to get near your lighter troops. Keep them alive and keep firing, you just might make it. Adepta Sororita I’ve played a lot as the AS, modded and vanilla, and I like them. They are melee and close combat heavy, which is not my play style at all: I prefer to shoot from afar. But they are utterly bonkers, and I love it. The mortifier is my new favourite unit: basically a coffin armed with flamers and a buzz saw. A Couple of those will cut through anything, even cities aren’t safe. They can’t take a beating though, so you’ll have to maneuver to keep them alive. And the AS has the best tank in the game, the Castigator. It’s actually useful out of the box, unlike most Imperial tanks, which initially lack the heavy bolter. The As is nicely balanced and fits the game well, would recommend. Escalation pack Is the Escalation Pack worth it? I honestly don’t know. Necrons are my favourite faction, and they get the Ghost Ark, which is basically a light tank with a healing trait. But Necrons are self-healing already, and notorious for coming back. The Eldar get Hornets, which are okay, I suppose. Skitarii Rangers and Space Marine Scouts are both great, but as I said, I prefer long range weapons. The Guard gets the Devil Dog, a mid-tier tank. Not great, but if there’s a hole in your front, a Devil Dog will plug it just fine. For me, the real winners are the Tau: they get the Tiger Shark, a monstrous flyer. It’s not the Manta, but it might as well be, it’s that big. I don’t get the reasoning behind the Tiger Shark, but if you like playing as Tau, it sure is nice. I don’t play as Orks, Tyranids or Chaos, but from what I can tell, Forgefiends and Hive Guards seem fine, at least they cause trouble for your lighter units. Megatrakk Scrapjets are orky enough, besides Oo Cares! Overall gameplay in 2023 Some picks from the patch notes: - Added advanced game setup options: Starting Resources, Resource Costs, Resource Upkeeps and Research Costs. - Increased Knight Crusader, Baneblade, Obelisk, Tesseract Vault and Lord of Skulls movement from 2 to 3. - Increased Bulgryns Brute Shield Invulnerable damage reduction from 33% to 50%. - Increased Cybernetica Datasmith Reprogram Robot cost from 20 to 40 and cooldown from 5 to 10. They did something to the research progression. I can’t really put my finger on it, but something seems off, if you are used to the old system. Yes, you can adjust it now, but I’ve found it difficult to find a good balance. I currently play with the setting High. Those endgame mammoths now actually get to the battle before it’s over. I’m all for it. And Bullgryns now tank like never before. Too bad that in my mod I can only build five of them. And my Kastelan hunting became a lot harder, oh well.
