The two stories seem disconnected enough that they could occur in either order. That's what I meant by my rather convoluted explanation. That the Ghilanβnain statue could be used to activate the pools is an interesting idea though. Especially if Strife was acting in his capacity for the Executors. It makes me wonder if they could be behind that βsea monsterβ, which would contradict my previous theory about her being Solasβ ally. The halla figurine has to be significant in some way and it likely is in connection with her monsters. I just can't ignore the fact that the monster pools smell of the sea. Why would that be? Now if they are connected with Arlathan in some way and that is beneath the sea then that could explain it. Still, with the number of seascapes, most of which show monsters coming out of it, I do wonder if the halla statue attracts them in some way. So maybe it is simply a case of the halla figurine activating everything associated with Ghilan'nain, whether that be monster pools or monsters in the deep water. Well of course that depends on his relations with Ghilan'nain. We know she liked to mix things up a bit from the story of how she encouraged one of Dirthamen's followers to break the law about taking the shape of the divine. She rose from the ranks so she is well aware there is nothing inherent about being a god because she was elevated in order to get her to tow the line about her monsters. So like him she knows the gods are essentially no different to the rest of them. If it was Solas who told her not to kill her sea monsters and this was not done at Mythal's bidding, then he must have had a reason for it. So this "god" monster could still be an ally. Then again, it would make sense that they were under control of those "Across the Sea" who may be using them to either attack him or bring him out into the open where they can strike at him. As I say, it all boils down to who activated the journal that got Strife exploring the forest looking for the statue.

The halla statue activating the brine pools is an interesting theory. I do get the feeling the executors must be fade/spirit related. Strife/the entire clan could be executor agents, knowingly or unknowingly curious about ancient magic. The executors say themselves they are acting towards a higher purpose and are 'preparing for the day', which does lend credence to the idea that the halla statue activated the brine pools because these pools are ultimately building an army. In DAI they said that Corypheus 'threatens us all'. However, Solas' plans seem to have aligned with what Corypheus intended so far. In that regard I think the executors must be threatened by what Solas is doing- if they are spirit related they may be affected by the veil too considering Cole mentions in Trespasser that most spirits have now fled to the corners of the fade. There seems to be a lot of overlap between the literal ocean and the fade too, which is also referred to as the sea of dreams by Solas. Considering Mythal is said to have first stepped out from the sea and she is a serpent herself, I am inclined to think she originates from the fade, especially because she says she is much stronger there. We also don't really know what Mythal fully is either. She could have the same origin as the executors, which may explain why Solas considers them dangerous. They could conceivably 'step out of the sea' just like Mythal did. I also remember in DAI there was a note that mused about how hard it was to tell if the water in the fade was real or a manifestation. There are also numerous boats that can be seen in the fade in DAO, with oars and sails in pools of shallow water. Now, I wonder if water is something that bridges the gap between the fade and the real world? Lyrium is said to do this, but the specifics haven't really been explained. Remember in the Descent there is a lyrium sea near the titan that almost looks like the Storm Coast? What if travelling via ocean/the fade allows one to travel between worlds, accessing the farthest corners of the fade or even a new world altogether? When the executors say they are from 'across the seas' they could mean lyrium seas, or the seas in the fade itself. The art so far has suggested the executors are fade related, and I was pondering earlier if the executors could be spirits from the deepest fade. Solas says himself he has travelled the fade the most out of anyone, but travelling to the deepest fade is a challenge to most dreamers, and I would guess even him. If the executors are from the deepest fade, they would be an unknown enigma that even he wouldn't know too much about. The pages of this bookβmemory?βare instructions on how to reach the deepest parts of the Fade, realms so far removed they're unmarked by Dreamers:
"Epiphany requires a mind smooth as mirror glass, still as stone. Put aside ten years for practice, and the next hundred for searching. What others have learned will ease your journey. Those who never manifested outside the Fade will find it easier to find its stillest roots, but it is rare the compulsion overtakes our brethren of the air."
If Solas saved those deep sea creatures of Ghil's, maybe it was because he intended on using them to journey to the outskirts of the fade. These creatures are described as well-wrought, and remember she was asked to destroy her creatures because they were wild and untamed. This implies to me he saved them because they could be useful to him as a mount or guide. Maybe he intended on using them to travel to the farthest corners of the fade, because they honestly sounds like what he would be doing if he had his way.

I was looking up something to do with the architecture in Minrathous when I was reminded of something. The great Proving Grounds in the centre of Minrathous is designed as a gigantic triangular prism. Now I assume this was constructed by ancient Tevinter at the time of Darinius but we know that the Imperium seem to have got a lot of their ideas from delving in ancient elven ruins. Also many buildings and cities were built over elven foundations. So it is curious that they should have chosen the triangle as the basis for this architecture. So, did they find some reference to the elven use of prism design for magical constructs or at this time did they still have contact with "those across the sea" and the technology came from there?

The one in the video was at least implied to be an ally, so they may not with Solas. Or at least not all of them. All we know for sure is they're elven and the Dalish from Clan Morlyn have similar garb. Do they have access to gear from the ancients? Working with ancients?

Did the representative that attended the meeting in the Chateau wear the same colors as these people in the concept art? I don't remember a mask being mentioned just a hood obscuring their face and their voice being unrecognisable. Maybe they have ranks/roles like any other group and the emissary was sent for diplomacy not combat hence the difference in apparel? Won't learn more until later I am afraid. Curious why they started 2021 with the masked archer though.

Dark Samite is black. They also wore a hood with a thin mesh over it to cover their face.

Think more dark grey than black. I seem to recall it was quite hard to find anything that was true black among the cloth materials. After all you would describe black as dark anyway; it is just black. trim in strange, twisting shapes that were hard to look at I still question if it was just coincidence that the patterns on the columns in Horror of Hormack and the trim of the Executors clothing were both hard to look at, seeming to twist and change in ways that made Ramesh's eyes water and Charter's eyes hurt. Could it be that the halla were designed with twisting horns because Ghilan'nain favoured this design rather than the columns were decorated to look like halla horns? I definitely think there is some connection between Ghilan'nain and the Executors. Could she have originally been from across the sea herself? I've said elsewhere that I'm really starting to wonder about Ghilan'nain and the level of her power. She might have only joined the ranks of the Creators/Evanuris late on but it seems to me she forced their hand and agreed to the compromise over her monsters because it suited her to join them and they were afraid of her. Think about it, there were seven of them and only one of her and yet they had to bribe her rather simply kill her and destroy her monsters. May be it was only after she joined their ranks that things started to go to wrong.

Ghilan'nain would make a great mirror to Solas, and a potentially useful ally to help us deal with him. If the world reverts to Pre Veil she will have to share power with the other Evanuris, her only true rival in this era is Solas, and he has been weakened significantly as opposed to his Pre Vil self. If we can find her, coax her into attacking Solas and then wipe out the weakened survivor, we might have a chance.

At first I think, yes executor and then again, no that can't be it must be Sola's soldiers. If the Executors have some sort of connection with the ancient elves then they could be an Executor. Otherwise, I think their strongest connection might be with Andruil but they could be one of Solas' allies. In the trailer they were hunting darkspawn and, like Flemeth/Mythal, Solas does seem to oppose the blight and condemns the use of blight magic. In fact they could also be a servant of Mythal. The recent release doesn't have any obvious twisted horns/branches to their helmet so they might be two different archers. Of course what is curious about the image is the fact that the rocks are definitely floating, as in the one with the flying aravels, so as you say they must be in the same location. So is this an indication that the Veil is definitely coming down in the next game? Or is it just the Veil behaving strangely in the region of the Arlathan Forest? The short story is called "The Ruins of Reality", which suggests that reality no longer has much meaning there, even if the phenomenon that Strife and Irelin were dealing with seemed to cease with them obtaining the halla figurine.

Well assuming we even see it even on the skyline, which is not guaranteed because we never saw the Grand Cathedral even in the distance even though we were meant to be in Val Royeaux, I'd say that if they reproduce the description in WoT accurately then it would look very different from the Louvre. That is just a plain glass structure and not particularly large, whereas the proving grounds are meant to be huge and covered in terraces and hanging gardens so it appears a "green jewel in the centre of a stone city". That would certainly be something to behold if they do it right.

Another thought given how much concept art seems connected with the sea, which goddess is most associated with the sea, which goddess has a Well of Sorrows, which goddess had an image that rose from the area the well had occupied that looked like this. So "those across the sea" could be connected with Mythal but an earlier incarnation perhaps.

So even with one of the rectangular sides facing down, there's no way could you mistake it for Louvre's pyramid shape.

Thanks for sharing this. I was thinking of the Louvre when reading about it and I wonder if the writer in WoT really realised the correct shape because I suspect they were thinking about the Louvre too. Still pyramid or prism, triangles are definitely important not only to the elves and the Executors but also ancient Tevinter and possibly ancient humans too. There are pyramids on Par Vollen but it is not clear if they were built by the early Neromenians or just occupied by them much as the elven ruins on the mainland were. If the figures in the latest images hadn't been shown with obviously bare feet, suggesting elves, I would have thought the Executors were more linked with the ancient Neromenians because of the triangle with wavy lines and the fact the Neromenians originally came from across the sea to land in Par Vollen. However, now triangles seem as important in ancient elven art I really don't know what to think.

Post by Solas on Jan 15, 2021 19:14:16 GMT
On my 9004th reading today I realized a possible connection between Executors and Ghilan'nain / Solas this forum needs a [mindblown] emoji from back in March not long post-TN, this is still my favvest pet theory (or cracktheory more like, since it's pretty tinfoily) TN spoilers follow also I fully acknowledge this is cracky what stuck out to me then was the Executor smelling of the sea and Ghil's monster bath smelling of the sea and how often the reader is reminded of the smell. why does the monster pool and its associated horrors like when it leaks out of Friedl smell of the salty ocean? the pool is miles underground under a lot of rock inland. why is it repeated so much? I thought about how we have no idea what the one in the story looked like under there and how its voice sounded weird (rendering a voice sounds kinda monstery in a manner that reminds me of how the Cekorax rendered one, kinda), and about how Ghil made monsters. then I tripped and fell down a mineshaft .. Ghil explicitly made sea creatures in the past.. and "On the second day she drowned the giants of the sea, except those in deep waters, for they were too well-wrought, and Pride stopped her hand." she destroyed all of them, except some, because possibly-Solas (oohh there's the Solas connection) stopped her. "Well-wrought"? Too well-wrought? If the Pride there was Solas, why would he step in and intervene in Ghil destroying her monster creations? he wouldn't have a problem with her destroying a bunch of dangerous wild animal-analogues, or a bunch of monster-level creatures, or not really if it had to be done anyway. but if she'd managed to create something with true sentience, and had been about to [essentially] kill all members of a sentient group of beings, even having unnatural origins as they did, then yeah, I can see why he'd have a problem with it and step in to stop her. could that be what "well-wrought" means? particularly complex, higher forms of life? we know she experimented sometimes with sentient beings (elves) as ingredients (in notes on methods of enchantment, she talks to some of the stock as a courtesy, which means she was talking to something that understands), so it's not that much of a stretch. so anyway maybe they're her creations or descendants of her creations, and maybe that explains why they know Solas. Solas says the Executors are dangerous and Ghil's creatures were dangerous. they're concerned about Solas, his plans and want to eliminate him. you'd be grateful for having being saved that time long ago, but it was long ago, and his plans now potentially have the side effect of releasing Ghil back into the world. if I was a sentient being created by a mad-scientist analogue, I wouldn't look fondly on my creator or their whole faction/social class really. I also would prefer to remain free and away from them, and prefer the creator to stay locked up in magic jail. If Ghil is mad and whatnot are they worried about her being released back into the world again? maybe she'd try to claim them and enslave/abuse them again or something. peak tinfoil now: - about their symbol, the wavy lines are obviously oceanic, and down pointing triangles in our world has sometimes been used as a symbol to represent like female deities and divine female powers, mothers and the womb of creation (pools of water..)
- mythal is said to have stepped out of the sea and (while it may not be the true origin of her, or its maybe not a literal sea but the Fade if it is, but anyway) this has always reminded me for some reason of the formation of organic molecules from inorganic molecules irl and the idea of the origin of life in the sea. then I think about how some scientists study and experiment re: abiogenesis trying to replicate it kinda. primordial soup and amniotic fluid, monster baths.. for whatever reason it gives me the mental image of mad scientist Ghil trying to replicate the DA fantasy elvhen version of abiogenesis in her labs..
- Friedl iirc was driven mad by what she saw and killed herself not long after ramesh found her. the colonist found from the lost amaranth expedition had been driven mad by something he'd seen and killed himself not long after being found
- about the symbol again, do they ever specify the 2 wavy lines go thru the triangle horizontally? I can't remember. but if not, there's nothing saying they are horizontal and that could just be us assuming because waves on the sea. if the 2 wavy lines intersect more vertically with the triangle it wouldn't look far from a stylized halla head. just like the stylized halla head on notes of methods of enchantment and the symbol near the monster pool...

from back in March not long post-TN, this is still my favvest pet theory (or cracktheory more like, since it's pretty tinfoily) Thanks for reproducing this here. I must have missed it the last time you posted it. You will know from my own posts that I think there is some sort of link between the Executors and Ghilan'nain's pools. Also the symbols that look like halla horns; I've said how perhaps halla were created with those horns because of wavy lines/twisted symbols being favoured by Ghilan'nain. However, I think you may be onto something with the idea that Solas stopped her killing the "too well wrought" sea monsters because they were sentient beings. Remember what he says to Cassandra when she asks what he believes in? "...the inherent right of all free willed people to exist." So if these monsters had shown themselves capable of intelligence and free thinking, then he would object to them being killed. Whether they knew he had been responsible for their stay of execution or not, if they had been freed from the influence of Ghilan'nain by his action in imprisoning her naturally they wouldn't want her released again. What do you think about some link with the Qunari? I'm mindful of those mosaics we find that we are told have been re-purposed by Tevinter and some of the images altered. One of them had a figure that the dwarf thought was a Magister, overlooking marching ranks of what looks like kossith and the title of the mosaic is "Freed are the slaves". So assuming the picture was altered from how it looked originally, could the figure surveying the kossith be Ghilan'nain perhaps? Also, the Qunari seem to know a great deal about Solas. For example, they knew that the orb belonged to him and was given to Corypheus, yet we only discover that from him personally. Rassan also maintains that even Solas is not his true name. Why would she think that?

gervaise21 no problem, I can't remember if I posted all of it at the time but that was what I was thinking. "Also the symbols that look like halla horns; I've said how perhaps halla were created with those horns because of wavy lines/twisted symbols being favoured by Ghilan'nain. " - interesting π "Remember what he says to Cassandra when she asks what he believes in? "...the inherent right of all free willed people to exist." So if these monsters had shown themselves capable of intelligence and free thinking, then he would object to them being killed. " -> right?? that's when he'd step in, not if she was killing a bunch of cows or a bunch of mindless monsters, even if they were beautifully designed or super cool monsters. there had to have been something special or different about them. it reminds me kinda of how the Angara in ME are an artificially created race, by the Jardaan. I confess I don't have any 0.2 about a possible link with the Qunari, I'm not sure. interesting how Gatsi refers to the carver as female. " It repeats because the carver knows what she's good at, so she does it again and again" reminds me of the repeating carvings in Horror of Hormak and of Ghil repeating her experiments again and again. And the Evanuris warred with the Titans, so maybe that explains why the 'carver' has a familiarity with the stone. 7 total figures - 7 Evanuris minus Mythal and Solas. 2 additional figures on each side - reminds me of the newest mural. separate note I do feel like if the arcance archer faction people are indeed connected with the Executors in some way, I'm still π for the Ghil theory - the arcane archers are elfy/ancient elfy, the triangle could be the Exec symbol, Strife refers to Ghil (and Andruil) ofc in TN, there's the halla statue in the new short, Andruil and Ghil are associated, and the archer in the trailer has on a headpiece which looks suspiciously like it has twisting halla-style horns "Also, the Qunari seem to know a great deal about Solas. For example, they knew that the orb belonged to him and was given to Corypheus, yet we only discover that from him personally. Rassan also maintains that even Solas is not his true name. Why would she think that?" - anyone's guess

interesting how Gatsi refers to the carver as female. How does he know that? It seems odd that he can tell this just from the quality of the carving. Still the idea that the original carver was female does become more significant when you think of the images in Horror of Hormack. PW also said a long time back that many of the images in Tevinter were not original but altered elven ones, just as many of their cities were built over elven foundations and many of their artifacts were looted from elven ruins. It is also possible that some may have been given by elven allies that did not go into uthenera in the early days of the rise of the humans. I have this theory that magic originally got into the human race through inter-breeding with elves as the offspring would show no evidence of this. -> right?? that's when he'd step in, not if she was killing a bunch of cows or a bunch of mindless monsters, even if they were beautifully designed or super cool monsters. there had to have been something special or different about them. The question is were they completely different monsters, akin to the reptilian people mentioned in the Descent or could they have been the forerunners of the kossith, or a bit of both. So people were told they were spared because they were in "deep water" but actually they were "across the sea" on another continent. Alternatively, the Executors were the descendants of the sea monsters and thus linked with water, whereas the kossith were the descendants of the reptilian people who worship fire.

I've been thinking, always a dangerous thing...
βWhat he is does not concern us,β the Executor said, the words neutral but carrying a weight that made the wine in its cup ripple. βWe across the ocean care only for his goals and means of accomplishing them.β The Executors said that "Corypheus threatens us all" but they don't say the same thing about Solas. Maybe that's because they're not against tearing down the Veil, but how Solas means to do it and the consequences if he does it wrong (wrong in their eyes) and since I think Solas is a fool and a jerk, he probably will do it wrong. **mini anit-Solas rant over**
If the Executors are as ancient, or working for entities as ancient as speculated in this thread, then they/their bosses were around pre-Veil. When Solas made his move way back then, they were also affected. And weakened or at least discombobulated for a long time. Corypheus' plans would have unleashed demons to run all over Thedas, happily destroying everyone in his (Corypheus) name while Cory set himself up as the new (and only?) god on the block. That wouldn't make the Executors happy.
They rebuilt in the post-Veil years and have been keeping watch for centuries. What if they know something Solas doesn't? They know that the Veil is slowly getting weaker and will dissipate over time. Or maybe Solas does know but he's too impatient - isn't that why he gave the orb to Cory in the first place? He could have waited till he was stronger but chose not to. He slept for how many generations? but couldn't wait a handful of years to be strong enough to handle the orb himself?
Or maybe the Veil isn't breaking down, but it does need to come down since it's an artificial construct that interferes with any number of things beyond imprisoning the Evanuris and the Forgotten ones. The Executors may even have their own plans for taking down the Veil but wish to do so in as non-traumatic fashion as possible - no mass death, no unleashed Evanuris (they were probably rivals, or likely to become rivals), no mass destruction of the current world. Can't avoid a lot of changes and some damage, but there's no need to throw out the baby with the bathwater.
Since Solas is the one who put up the Veil, it probably will be easier for him to take it down than for anyone else. His methods and ancillary goals, however, are questionable. And that's why the Executors are worried about him and ready to take action.

Looking for something else entirely, I came across this among the codices for Trespasser. It says it is found in the Forgotten Tower but that doesn't tell me much as I totally do not remember seeing this anywhere:
Mold and rot have eaten most of the pages of these books. The remaining vellum is covered in spiky handwriting with spelling that is either archaic, wildly idiosyncratic, or both:
...saw yht cross from the Volca, that which draggeth souls down to yhts larder in the brinedark. Hys beast preyth on humblewits and goldsworn even & the tower's keeper declares I will rest here if yht would ease me. The elvhen, which pulled me grip-up from my end, kends he is last of his kynde. I made it known elvhen live south-like, but he says yht would not be as yht was & I said that's evertrue & he laughed lark-like. Come dark he showed me a mirror deep strange, an "eluvian" sworne to beene in his family for...
It is interesting because it mentions something crossing the Volca Sea on the west side of the Continent. The same side as the Voshai were said to come from. Look at the bit I have bolded though. That could be referring to some sort of sea monster that has a larder at the bottom of the ocean, or it could refer the brinedark pools of the Horror of Hormack.
Then there is the reference to a elf who claims he is the last of his kind and rejects the idea that there are any elves in the south who are the same as him. This elf apparently has an eluvian.
I don't recall anyone analysing this text before but could it have any connection to the Executors? I've already suggested previously that the Voshai could be connected with them as the only thing they were interested in buying was lyrium, so clearly a race of magic users but apparently without a reliable source of lyrium in their homeland. Then that was apparently subjected to some sort of massive cataclysm (magical?)
