This "coding" shit, I don't get it. It's like taking real world stereotypes and applying them to fiction. Which is usually sexist, racist, misogynist, or any mix of the aforementioned. And yet, these people go out of their way to apply it to fiction. Like the D&D Orcs thing. Then they blame everyone else, for the coding they inserted into fiction. The complete lack of awareness and the hypocrisy of these actions is just ... it's transcendent.
They scream about stereotypes appearing but then scream when the look doesn't follow the behavior. The only way to deal with those people is to ignore them. I've met people who I was 100% sure were gay/lesbian and then found out I was wrong. It's just like. I think it's why BroShep/Kaidan worked so well for me. Neither fits a stereotype but there they are together anyway. I'll have to say that BioWare has managed to avoid stereotypes around sexuality. I think Traynor was the closest to a stereotype . Cora's haircut means nothing, especially so far into the future. As for the asari, they're the biotics who taught her and she looked up to one as a mentor. Ridiculous. I actually know one lesbian who is drop dead gorgeous and very effeminate. Yeah, people being people. Who'd guess it? Particularly given she has an occupation that requires her to wear a helmet a lot. Short hair only makes sense.

Back in the day, my mother walked by, saw my buzz cut femshep, and she said "oh what a great idea. Get all that hair out of the way, she clearly has no time to bother with that."

Wouldn't it be cool if you could romance character, not by simply clicking an "I like you" button, but by organically developing the relationship between the two characters? I felt the A/K romances had some progression. You had to spend time building a relationship. Liara is another story, since she'll jump in your bed if you so much as smile at you, but I don't see that with A/K. As for ME3 and Kaidan, that was the result of a fan movement. I know some people got butthurt over their straight male Shepard getting hit on but get over it. If you're not interested just say so. I've had girls hit on me at times in my life. If you are interested then pursue it. I always headcanon that people like Shepard, Kaidan and Ashley (who should have been an option for FemShep) were bi or, as some say, "Shepard-sexual". At the very least they were probably progressive enough to not be bothered by the flirts. We know Jacob is another ninjamance type like Liara but what about the rest of the crew? Less so, I think. All of that said, yes, organic romances would be nice. But how do you make them happen without certain boxes being checked? It comes through discussion. Then, after a certain point, they become a romance option. I guess you can spread it out longer but then you're stuck with them being your SO until nearly the end. I like my romances to be part of the story as much as possible. I do like these discussions because I sometimes see different POVs that I can relate to. It seems you are being a bit dismissive. It's not people getting mad at Kaidan for hitting on their straight character. It is more ME3's notoriously bad writing and not taking choices into account. Kaidan is a stand out character in ME3 in terms of writing. He is well written, likable, grows as a character, but stays true to who he was in the past. They just expanded on him. I can't say the same for Ash. He is a genuinely nice guy without being a push over. He is also masculine without wearing it on his sleeves like a lot of burly video game men. So he goes against the stereotypes as well. Him hitting on a straight Shepard who is still romantically involved is out of character because he doesn't seem the sort to do that. The fact that Kaidan hits on you if you romanced Jack, Tali, or Miranda is weird especially if you didn't officially call it off. Hell, he does it even if I tell Miranda I always want her in my life. This is unacceptable to me regardless of straight or gay. He clearly knows femshep is with someone else into ME3, and can remain amicable. Yet, he doesn't know for the male? Or is he just a jerk that doesn't care and wants to sneakily get with Shepard no matter what? It's bad writing or the game not taking choice into account. If you break it off with your past romance, it's fair game for him to hit on you. Besides most straight males probably save Ash because of her gender or they refuse to give Kaidan a chance. I'm probably one of five in the fanbase that thinks he's a great character. And I disliked him hitting on me for those reasons. Not because I'm straight.

Yeah to me it's just really discordent bad writing. My Shep romanced Miranda for 2 games but because you can't lock it in till late, suddenly you have to have a really awkward moment where a long-term platonic friend appears to have misread your whole relationship and your sexuality.
I was actually replaying Mass Effect 1 and i found it equally bizarre how Ashley seemed to view my character as being interested for platonically chatting to her. I then had to be abrasive with her at the end to avoid it.

Pretty much. I was in a similar boat as it happened first with Tali. You get her much later. The same issue happened as Miranda too. I told her I was still interested in her at the first meeting. I assumed this was a lock in point. Kaidan still wanted to "live in the illusion" in the hospital. I thought it was weird, but shrugged it off. Only to find out that he still hit on me because Shepard didn't meet up with Miranda in the apartment yet. Most people talk about how Garrus is best bro, but to me that's Kaidan. Boy was it a shock that he asked me out when I was already with someone he considers a close friend (Tali). From my experience, I have seen a a bit of rhetoric that is a bit too dismissive toward straight players when issues like this are brought up. I don't have that issue with Ash because she doesn't go past ME1 for me. Her character and romance are particularly lousy. Which sucks, because I like her in ME1.
