FOudn this yesterday. www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/event?ocid=prod_sv_cons_win_eng_WatchAnnounceNTPIt's interesting but also a little concerning. THough they say "Windows 11 will be completely FREE to those Users already on any version of Windows 10"..... I just checked my 2013 HP Elitebook (because it has really good specs, far above the projected Minimum reqs for Win 11....such as a 1.0 Ghz CPU-- mine is 2.3 ghz. My 8570W even has a built in TPM chip, which is also a requirement for Win 11.....But the System Checker says my laptop doesn't meet the requirements....Though I will apparently still be able to use Windows 10 for at least another year or two until 11 is the new full standard OS and they phase out support of 10 (which will suck for a whole lot of people). www.techradar.com/news/windows-11-home-and-proThis does have me thinking that all this news is because of the whole new platform and architecture (DDR5, PCIE 5.0, LGA 1700) that is also due to be released in the same time frame.....Very convenient. Way to force everyone who has a 10 series CPU or 11 series.....to spend even more money to buy everything at top shelf prices, brand new hot tech on the market....Just to support this new fancy OS. Ugh. Makes me a tad concerned because I just bought a 10900KF and Z490 motherboard, an upgrade from an X99/2011-3 platform.

I'd say wait for it, the stuff will be resolved when it has been out for some time, or even before. I think the lower limit seems to be around 8th generation intel core/4000 series pentium-celeron chips with TPM. Seems my lowly Asus E403 can run it. I wont be rushing in as usual, waiting on the sidelines to see if they've fixed Win Update etc.

I don't care much about my laptop as I don't use it very often. I am more concerned about my main PC, considering the upgraded parts I just bought:
10900KF
LGA 1200 socket Z490 Aorus Master
DDR4 3000.
My new motherboard does have TPM hardware and BIOS enabled capabilities....But still, I am concerned. I am skeptical. Right now leaning towards the marketing push for all the new tech due out in the same time frame. Haven't built it yet, going to be doing that tomorrow once I am finished work for the Summer. Still, would be nice to know going forward that I haven't wasted money on PC hardware that won't support the OS that will soon become the new standard default...When potentially I shuold have waited for LGA 1700 etc.

You have 10th gen, if the hardware starts from 8th gen for Win11, you are safe from that part. If you have TPM 2.0 chip etc. You should be ok then too. Win10 will be supported for 4 more years.

In general I have a hunch that Win11 is the one to give a pass. Or at least wait until it can be modded beyond recognition.

Indeed I've been skeptical about 10 from the start despite how smart it looks so I don' tsee myself changing operating systems to 11 any time soon. Maybe when it's time to get my next PC but certainl ynot before especially given 10 is only now running moer or less how I like it.

It is easier to avoid this way; I prefer letting Windows do most updates, it just has to ask me first. This one is a no.

10 is only now running moer or less how I like it Yeah, it's shame how long it took to get 10 working properly. Being an insider since the beginning of 10 - It was a shame how much there was speed difference between the beta and release in some operations, release being the slower one. Now we cannot know if its about Telemetry being enabled heavily in the first versions or not, but it was not the case with Windows 7 betas and release. I think they've mostly got it back but explorer is still somedays very very slow. Compare clicking open the default network/power/mixer/clock&calendar and clicking close them. In Win10 there is a noticeable lag from time to time which wasnt on Win8 and previous explorers. Same for the task popup, eg. right click on taskbar task fex. Firefox. That menu is sometimes not even coming up until tens of seconds, I dunno what explorer is doing... and this is on fresh install. Then lets not go to the thumbnail cache problems with large asset directories - have to use Adobe Bridge or such for those. I just wish they'd give PRO and Workstation versions better way to handle updates and the updater mechanism wouldnt be so aggressive as it still is in Win10, albeit less so than in the 2018 versions, and somehow would at last unify the menus, control panel and settings together. What I've seen and heard there are some good performance enhancements under the hood and in the scheduler but it remains to be seen.

Scalpers swooping in already, same old story, retailers sold out and shortages. Panic ensues $20 TPM selling for $100 on ebay. Luckily I have a compatible cpu and enabled it in the Aorus Bios. Probably academic for me as I'll probably hold off as I'm a pc gamer and new windows releases are usually temperamental when it comes to games and don't tend to play nicely with my Steam Library. Some people probably buying modules that may not actually need them as some cpu's are 11 compatible and just need the setting to be enabled in the Bios. I have an (AMD) Gigabyte Aorus motherboard, I entered the bios, went to Peripherals found the appropriate setting AMD CPU fTPM (it's at the top) and enabled it. Saved and restarted and it's now discoverable by Windows key+R. To check if TPM is enabled in Windows search with Run by pressing Windows key+R and type tpm.msc in the field and enter. If it's active the window should report an overview and display "Status The TPM is ready to use". Windows 11: Supported ProcessorsAMD: linkIntel: Microsoft Link

Where did you find the TPM chips for sale? I would like one (for distant future use) for my new Gigabyte(me) Z490 Master, but I can't find them anywhere. It says on the Gigabyte(me) website that they are for sale directly from Gigabyte (the exact model needed/supported for/by my motherboard) but then I click on "Buy" and nothing comes up. So where did you find yours? My laptop has a TPM that is already enabled (along with a fingerprint scanner, which it won't boot without my finger print.....a security feature that I very much like), An 8-core i7 3610QM @ 2.3 Ghz, a 512gb Nvidia Quadro K1000M GPU, 16gb DDR 4 @ 2133, a 1 TB SSD........All well above the Minimum requirements for Win 11......But it says that my laptop doesn't/won't/can't support it. Really not sure why. Actually....just checked the list......My CPU isn't listed. That would be the reason.

Your laptop probably has TPM 1.2 while Win11 requires TPM2.0 for some reason. I checked my PCs and only my main rig has TPM2.0 Which means that, it's time to start looking for suitable Linux distros.

Why the whining? New Windows should be installed as late as possible. Which means in about 3 - 5 years from now. Sometimes, Win ME, Win 8, you don't need them at all, so you can wait a few years more.

I think I read a few articles saying that they were sold out almost everywhere and they were quoting the grossly inflated prices the stuff was being resold at. Checked for myself and it's a similar stock situation here in the UK, the locusts have devoured them. It seems that trying to find a TPM module just now is like trying to find toilet paper in the middle of a pandemic. Sorry for any crossed wires, confusion arising from my previous post (previous post should have said cpu instead of chip, corrected).

In my case it's the late adopter anguish: I upgraded everything about 18 months ago and was hoping to get a longer service life out of Win10.

All this nonsense with TPM... This is a control mechanism, nothing more.
From an article about it -
This is a very problematic paragraph for me.
What organizations, exactly? What consitutes tampering? Especially with software... uh uh.
I see the benefit for administrators in the laptop fleet scenario, but I also see a lot of caveats and another instance where I don't own the thing I bought.
So, Windows 11 will wait a long while before it touches any of my systems, and maybe I'll have gone full Linux by then (3 out of 7 PCs in our house now have made the switch).
Microsoft can eat a bag of d.

I held out as long as possible, but our IT people at work finally forced us all to install Win 10, because of various upgrades they were doing to security and network applications. And then, after a while, I couldn't endure having different UIs on my own computers and at work, so I upgraded them all, to have some consistency. 😕

This is a control mechanism, nothing more. I agree. It sounds very dubious. What organizations, exactly? What consitutes tampering? Well exactly. Call me paranoid, but I say it's not paranoia when they are out to get you. So, Windows 11 will wait a long while before it touches any of my systems, and maybe I'll have gone full Linux by then (3 out of 7 PCs in our house now have made the switch). Yup, this as well. In the end of the day my gaming rig is the only one they can track and spy all they want. Everything else can run on Linux.

Yeap. Even though I've installed, configured and administrated linuxes since '94 - they're not yet there, especially from software side. Windows does now everything my Amiga4000 did back in the day, not all as well but faster Meaning I can play games, do music and audio related tasks with ease, do 3D modeling, 2D painting and actually multitask. Linux will get there too someday.
