Just found out about this section of the BSN boards the Expanse didn't take long to climb all the way up to number 2 of my favorites list, even surpassing Star Trek. Mass Effect is #1 Haven't read the books (tough I'm tempted) and can't wait for season 4. I'm super excited to see where it goes on from here. Love the whole series, especially like Bobbie, Amos, Alex and swearing Avasarala very much. Rocinante ready to roll

I've been hearing a lot about this show, and it was on my Netflix "To watch"-list. But for some reason it was removed from Netflix not that long ago, despite being a "Netflix-Original" in my country...

That's probably because the TV Series rights and Season 4 was picked up by Amazon and probably will be available there exclusively with their own streaming service (globally).

Okay, I'm hooked. Again. I watched season 1 and 2 on Netflix and was devastated that there didn't seem to be an option to watch season 3 there - this was way before Amazon jumped in to save the series. Now I finally managed to start season 3 on Prime, and holy shit, this season is good. All those characters are so well written, I can relate to most of them - even the "bad" guys, as they all have valid motives for their actions. The series manages to take you on a journey, not so much in terms of how the story progresses, but how the characters change in the face of catastrophies, shady politics and inevitable death. It shows so well how decisions of individuals can shape the future, and it doesn't point at random parties to judge their decisions. I really love it, and I'm really happy that it has such an awesome fanbase that made sure season 4 is happening. I mean, how can you not love characters like these: Giant Ambush Beetle: I know that you are a fan of BSG, that is why I am tagging you here. "The Expanse" feels a bit like BSG to me, in terms of how well it is written and how much you just relate to all those individual characters. No idea if you heard about it or not, I just wanted to recommend it to you to make sure.

I'm a big fan of The Expanse and I agree with the quality of the character writing. I often like the plot, the visuals but I cannot relate to the characters or I simply have no strong feelings for any of them, but in The Expanse everything is great PLUS I find all the characters interesting - and even love two of them - Miller and Amos-. I have to admit I kinda disliked Amos at first but the longer I watched the series the more I realized that I'd be exactly the same under those circumstances. Its uncanny, really. And damn, I had no idea that Thomas Jane could act that well, guess he always got crap roles before he became Miller in The Expanse.- His acting is so good and the character writing excellent. So lets keep on watching this awesome shit.

And damn, I had no idea that Thomas Jane could act that well, guess he always got crap roles before he became Miller in The Expanse.- His acting is so good and the character writing excellent. So lets keep on watching this awesome shit. Should have known you already watched it! It's been some time since I've seen Miller (there was a huge gap for me between season 2 and 3, and I'm still not finished with 3) but I've got the feeling I haven't seen the last of him just yet. And I agree with what you said about Amos. His character requires a second or third look to see why he is the way it is, and why he needs to be "that guy" in the story. For me, it's similar with Avasarala. At first I was more like "damn, what a manipulative, overbearing b - I mean - lady" but now I feel like I know her and her motives better, and I'm sure that she's learning a lot herself as the plot moves on. Similar with Bobbie. She is awesome. And sometimes, it's smaller things that really get me, like... ... when Anna realizes, that Errinwright was totally right about the president - that he's spineless, and that Earth doesn't mean nearly as much to him as his reputation. What a sad little man! Errinwright on the other hand - God, I hate his guts but then again, I totally get him. I really do. It's confusing. xD
... when Amos is "that guy" so that Prax doesn't have to be. Don't know why, that scene hit me hard.
... when Mao connects to Mei, and you think that he's returned to a path of righteousness - and then you realize that he's so dead inside that he just do empathy any longer. *le sigh*
... all those great small featurt parts, e.g. when the Marsian Captain of the Hammurabi decides to do what she thinks is right, despite all that is happening. I really didn't expect that, and I am so curious to see what will happen in the second half of the 3rd season. It's one of those shows where I really wanna keep on watching, but at the same time I stop myself from doing so because I don't wanna feel that emptiness again once it's finished and I need to wait forever until it's continued. xD

After a long gap, and not having paid enough attention to the first two seasons, I've been watching S3. I'm looking at these hybrids and all I can think is they look a hell of a lot like husks. They're also (on ep 6) guided by some other intelligence. Reapers? In any case, there are definite similarities. Makes me want to read the novels.
Oh, and the armor. It reminds me of N7 armor.

Indeed, the show kinda resembles Mass Effect at times. I like how it is futuristic but it tries to explain more or less how things work, and it doesn't go completely over the top in most cases.

I've "avoided" the books and spoilers so far, plan to read them after the TV series ends though.
I'm exited for season 4 obviously, but most importantly I'm just happy the show found a new home which should allow them to finish the series on their terms without the archaic TV network regulations and pressures.

Dam, what a weekend for SciFi fans. Expanse Trailer, ST: Picard Trailer. I'm in nerdheaven. BTW, they also released a fairly long clip of a landing sequence of the Rocinante:
Looks very cool. Only thing is that I would have expected flames during atmospheric entry. But maybe their thrusters are efficient enough to slow them down quickly enough to avoid too much friction. Anyway, looking good.

I've seen the 5 min trailer thing. Looks interesting, they've got the guy from GoT, what his name was? I dunno, Karl? the guy who started the crow rebellion in Craster's keep. Man... december 13 though, GEEZ that's a long ass time to wait, even more so if you want to start watching once the whole season ends so you don't have to wait one week per episode.

I have yet to get the first Witcher book that is a bit finicky to find around these parts. In any case I'm not reading at the moment.

In the books they did talk about it but I can't remember the specifics except that I do remember them making a big deal about it being one of the only atmosphere capable ships and that was a reason Holden and Rocinante were chosen to go there. To land they'd have to be able to slow to a fairly low speed and I guess that's why they'd come in tail first to use there main engine to break rather than using friction to slow down, so maybe that stopped the friction and heat flare???

Yeah I don't get it re good shows getting axed, I guess that's subjective but I also loved Firefly and couldn't believe that didn't get a 2nd season and number of viewers didn't even seem to be a justification for that. My only frustration is that the show has some differences to first three books and I just never understood why TBH. My life and books has been made a lot simpler and cheaper by recently getting a Kindle. I live in Australia and books and other media are REALLY expensive here, companies seem to think even I the digital age they can gouge us on books, DVD's and CD's etc. A paperback here costs between $25 and $30 AUD so to buy a 10 book set of books like The Empire of Bones saga would have cost me $300, more than a kindle costs. The good thing is with my Amazon book subscription ($12-99 per month) and the Amazon Kindle app (free) I ended up being able to "Borrow" most of the books for $0-00 or buy them for only $6-99. Same with the 14 book series I am reading now (Honer Harrington books), some I have borrowed for free and the rest are only $6-99. It has saved me heaps and I can access books I would have to order here and pay even higher prices!!!!

You guys are fine. Here they used to tax anything that wasn't made in country, including books (college books even), medicine, software, on top of everything else like electronics (all the junk imported from china), it was a 50% tax. And the cars made in country? well, they require a "special" tax to balance with the rest, so the narrative of "buy national" was just that. All because the government doesn't know how to nickel and dime their citizens even further.

I also got to the series late (I think end of season 2). I think it was pretty poorly marketed in the beginning, for all of us SciFi nerds to miss it for so long. For me, it was a collegue pointing out that there was this show that did space travel in a really nice way in terms of physics. I checked it out and fell in love pretty much instantly. As for good shows getting axed, at least in terms of scifi shows, I think most often, it is the budget and nothing else. SciFi and space opera needs a ton of effects and while that got gradually cheaper with CGI, it still is a lot of man hours to make even small scenes (and the visual standards also increased over time). I remember them saying that they deliberately confined the storyline of the reimagined Battlestar Galactica to just a few seasons roght from the start since they were sure they wouldn't get more than 3-4 seasons out of the show befire the network would realize just how goddam expensive it is to maintain (and it probably gets more expensive as you go forward since you always have to do something to top what's happened in the last season. Combine that with a fairly limited target audience (at least when compared to many shows in real settings which also allows for cheaper production) and you can see why networks as business have a hard time justifying such expenses. It's a shame but there you go.
