ok, this needs a little explaining... I'm at home waiting for the cable engineer to do some clever things to upgrade my broadband. So I had to go behind the TV to, well, clear a bit of access. It's amazing, when you think of it, what all that 'cable action' going on behind your device looks like! So here's a (probably short-lived) thread sharing the rather grubby hidden reality of what's behind your device . As it's a little unhealthy to be sharing pictures of your cabling, I thought I'd call the thread ' cable porn' This is mine, do you want to show me yours?

I had a console die at one point and, er, left the cables behind... because I wasn't brave enough to sort it out.
I'm tempted to do some labelling...

Your plugs are weird and you should... feel weird... But yeah, is that what plugs look like in the UK? At first glance they look like stove/oven plugs here- though it's probably just the shape. Oven plugs here are massive. Also Yeah! Take it all, you dirty clip!

It's been a while since I've seen the round peg style. Basically all your plugs are wrong except ours. I'm sorry, that was kinda American. Your plugs are nice too, eh?

That cable mess is not safe! I had to cable manage a huge mess because we have a lot of devices in the living room and it's like the connection point between the modem (in the basement office) and the other floors. Power outlets are also positioned really badly in this room, so I had to get around that. Every cable is tied down and fixed to the TV bench and is well above the floor, allowing easy cleaning and enough clearance so that in the event of flooding from a broken pipe (or similar), nothing will short. Being all tied to the bench also means that I can unplug just the few cables on the walls (two power cables, two ethernet cables) and move the bench around the room as I please. This will let us reconfigure the living room in the future without having to reroute all the cables. I've used a similar technique for my desk: All the cables are attached to the desk and hidden behind it. The two bits that are visible (from a low angle) are there to make it possible to move the PC around for easy cleaning and access to the side panel without having to remove everything. This is useful when I need to get inside the PC while it is running, as I did a few times to fine tune the internal fans for silence. Here it was much easier to keep data cables away from power cables. In the living room I tried to do it as much as possible, but in some parts they had to overlap. I do a lot of cable management elsewhere as well. When I travel I use camera pouches to hold small cables, memory cards (SD cards or Compact Flash, with readers), batteries and other electronic accessories so they are stored in something that is padded and easy to fit inside a bag, backpack or suitcase. Larger or thicker cables are tightly bundled like in the picture so that they can easily fit in line with the pouches. Whenever possible I keep plug caps, especially for data cables, so that they don't get tangled in fabric or accumulate dust inside. You can probably visit your local camera store and ask for camera pouches. Since the death of the compact cameras, these have been left mostly unsold in stores and I'm sure some owners will be happy to sell them in bulk at very low prices. Remember to get padded ones for some extra protection. Non padded ones are just as useful as any random plastic bag. The Lowepro pouches I have look fancy and are indeed rather "high end" products for what they are (they used to retail between 15€ and 35€ a piece), but I got all three of them for just 10€ shipped from the UK to Italy.
